Rumorpile: Orion Plant Is Possible Home To Small Cadillac Crossover

GM's Orion Plant Could Be Building A Cadillac

General Motors announced this week that it would be investing $245 million and adding 300 new jobs at its Orion Assembly plant - home of the Chevrolet Sonic, Buick Verano, and soon to be Chevrolet Bolt. Now this investment is for an "all-new vehicle program unlike any in the plant's 32-year history." So what could this vehicle be?

Motor Trend reports that a source says the program is "a future crossover with no predecessor" and that "the gaps in [Cadillac's] product lineup are obvious." So in other words, the possible program is a small Cadillac crossover.

Now we have been hearing and reporting that Cadillac is planning to have a range of crossovers in the next few years with the XT5 - the replacement for the SRX. There will be two crossovers sitting underneath and one sitting above the XT5. At the moment, we don't know if it will be a compact or subcompact crossover that will be built at Orion.

I wish they would use a modified version of the Alpha Platform for these Crossovers! It would be nice if they were RWD based so as to be truly Competitive in the Premium Segment instead of just more predictable FWD based GM Crap!

All I can say is this should seriously expand Cadillac sales in a positive direction. If I owned a current SRX I would be waiting with salivation right now.. If I owned any of those ugly ass foreign competitors I'd be planning a trip to Carmax right now to unload that $h!.. buy a bus pass for a few months and get an XT5 when it arrived. Gorgeous.. and more upscale than the Q5 or ML (or whatever its called)

reminds me of an Escalade and ELR merged

Good pictures of a previously not seen vehicle.   I like the grille on the XT5 because it looks like a Mercedes luxury grille.  But I am not a fan of the head lights or tail lights and that D pillar looks massive.  The shape is really similar to the current SRX with a bit of a sloping back like a Range Rover Evoque.  I don't know, looks fine I guess, I am glad the grille is larger, and not one of those little upper grilles with a huge air intake below the bumper like some cars do now.

I am guessing the small crossover is is a Cadillac Encore.  I think Cadillac should do one small FWD crossover, so I guess that could work, but I might like the Delta platform for it more.  I'd like to see the alpha platform used for the middle SUVs.

How old is the current MB GLK now? That one looks a full 15 years old compared to the above 'XT5'.

'XT5' looks interesting, nicely upscale… but I know I'm getting misled by the size of it.

Had a good look at a slowly passing Buick Encore today (I realize this is a class larger) but that was offensively small. Cadillac had better avoid going to that segment completely.

GLK came out in 2009, thus why the replacement goes on sale in a couple months.  I was never a fan of the GLK looks.

Encore is really small.  I'd rather see Cadillac use the Delta platform as the Q3/GLA competitor, and Alpha for the others.  I imagine XT5 is on the SRX same platform, unless it has moved to Epsilon.  Either way it is boring front drive.

Cadillac has no need to 'compete' with a q3/gla. Whatsoever.

For a guy who incessantly harps on how 'relatively little' Cadillac investment funding there reportedly is, why would you possibly advocate spreading that out over more & more segments?

Nevermind, I already know the answer.

    • I am not aware of travel cases for internal drives. Usually you have the drive and once you have made sure you own static electricity is discharged on your body, open the computer and unplug the power cable and data cable to the HD. Then you unscrew the screws holding the drive in. Put the drive into an Anti-Static bag and then usually into a box that has foam padding on all sides to protect the drive and then tape it up to close it.  With both drives in their proper storage bags, you can then have both drives in between foam insulation for handling any dropping of the box, etc. Pack them in a box and tape shut, should then easily handle going through your carry on or checked in luggage. To ship a hard drive, you need to: Secure the hard drive in its original packaging or anti-static bag. If you don't have an anti-static bag, place the drive into a zipped freezer bag to prevent any moisture getting into the drive during transit. Sandwich the drive between foam or wrap it in bubble wrap to absorb any minor shocks. Put the hard drive in a padded shipping box. Close and seal the box. Label your package. Amazon.com : hard drive shipping box This is pretty much all you need.
