Chevrolet Volt Getting Safety Enhancements (But It's Not A Recall)

Today, General Motors announced structural and cooling system "safety enhancements" for the Chevrolet Volt to better protect the batteries in a crash.

The enhancements include strengthening a portion of the Volt's vehicle safety structure, add a sensor in the battery coolant system reservoir, and add tamper-resistant bracket to the battery coolant reservoir.

GM North America President Mark Reuss said that GM is treating this as a voluntary customer satisfaction issue, and therefor it's not a recall. But it feels like a recall due to the process to fix the roughly 12,000 Volts either at dealers or with owners taking 2-3 hours to fix.

“The Volt has always been safe to drive. Now, we will go the extra mile to ensure our customers’ peace of mind in the days and weeks following a severe crash,” said Mary Barra, GM senior vice president of Global Product Development.

GM also revealed today that out of the 8,000 Volts sold, 250 have either have requested either a loaner vehicle or a potential buyback. Reuss says the number could change in light of the news.

It is a shame that with all of the other major car issues out there that the media has to focus on this one.

This is one of the biggest non issues I have ever seen. What they media will do for a headline.

At least GM hit this head on.
