LA 2011: Shelby GT500 Packing More Heat

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is making a powerful debut at this week's LA Auto Show. Underneath the revised front end lies a brand new 5.8L Supercharged V8 aluminum-block engine producing 650 HP and 600 lb-ft of torque. This means the GT500 can reach a top speed of 200 MPH - thanks to a 3,850lb weight. The GT500 also avoids the dreaded Gas Guzzler tax.

Ford says every bit of the drivetrain has been given a onceover with Ford fitting a larger, more-efficient TVS supercharger, new cross-drilled engine block and cylinder heads, updated cam profiles, a new carbon-fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

Two packages are available for the GT500; a Performance package adds SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and a Torsen limited-slip differential and a Track Package which adds external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.

Other features on the 2013 Shelby GT500 are a new launch control system, Brembo brakes, revised aerodynamics and new forged-aluminum wheels measuring 19 inches in front and 20 inches in the rear, wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires.

Whoa, a 351 with 650 horsepower...WHAAAAAT??? And Camaro ZL1 has about 100 hp less. I wonder how they match up to each other and the Chevy Spark on the dragstrip.

Cool..I wonder if Chevy will retaliate with a '13 Camaro ZR1 with maybe 750 hp... :)

It will be interesting to see if it can actually put the power down.

And to see how it matches up with the ZL1 on the 'ring.

Agreed, interesting to watch this play out.

The real winner is going to be the drivers of these cars. Competition at its best.

Ford stole any thunder the ZL1 had. Far more power and nearly 300 pounds less weight. The GT500 out powers a Corvette ZR-1, the GT500 has crazy horsepower.

Lets just see the Rag's compareO's specs before the Mustang is given the Vettes crown. Paper specs are like paper crowns.

Well they can give it a million horsepower, but it still has a solid rear axle. 650 hp in anything is crazy, but it a Mustang it is totally bonkers. So that makes it special, but a Nissan GT-R would probably still beat it around a track.

Just read a comparo in a rag (can't remember which) and a Mustang beat a 370 track wise and they were raving about Ford being smart to keep the live axle. Also NHRA almost uses a million horsepower but it still has a solid rear axle.
But a Nissan GT-R wouldn't probably still beat it around their track. :duck:

Hi all, sorry I've been neglecting the Ford forum the last few months. Personal life was a mess for a while. Anyways, I was very impressed with the Mustang and particularly the GT-500 changes. The live axel is actually a strength for the Mustang, it's just that refined. I'm very dissapointed that it doens't have larger rear tires. It should have gotten 305s out back at least to try and help harness this power. I'm curious to see what the revised gearing dos for it. It might allow the car to have a slight improvment int eh 0-60 but make a big difference in the 1/4 mile.

Also for the Mustang GT the new track packs and options are great. Some serious hardware that the Camaro SS doesn't even offer.
