What Does Volvo Have In Mind For Their Future Lineup?

Looking Into The Future Of Volvo

While all eyes are on the new 2015 Volvo XC90, Volvo is hard at work on their future models. Car & Driver caught a slide during the presentation which outlines what in store for the swedish brand.

Volvo's future lineup will comprise of three different model lines; the 40, 60, and 90 series. Each group will feature a sedan, wagon, and an SUV/crossover. Out of those three model lines, the 60 series is the only at the moment to feature all three.

This information shows that the long-running S80 and V70/XC70 will be replaced by the 90 series, and that 40 series will once again have a sedan in its lineup. The next-generation 60 and 90 series will utilize Volvo's SPA modular platform, while the 40 series will use the upcoming CMA platform.

The new China owners could have done a wonderful thing rather than just move forward with a Blah dude lineup. They could have dropped the stupid numbers thing and went with names and really introduced a lovely luxury lineup. I have to agree with others that I think this company will eventually fad into the back of being just a history note.

Well, Volvo has pretty much no tradition in naming their cars: P1800, 240, 440, 740, 960 and so on... Keeping 40/60/90 designations works just fine and corrects the 70/80/90 mess that exists now (though the V70 has pretty strong recognition as a brand within a brand).

The real story (and the spot where Volvo can - and, I hope, will - find its niche) is in newer small displacement engines and the combination of those engines with an electric engine driving the rear axle as seen in the new XC90.

Had to Bing V70 as I had never heard of it nor knew of it as a brand within a brand and then I saw the images. Station Wagon. Yea, not a winner or seller here in Seattle. Did they ever sell them here as I cannot recall ever seeing a volvo station wagon here in Seattle. I can say I have only seen 1 XC70 that is kinda like a station wagon on steroids.

IIRC XC70 was the original Allroad type station wagon; I believe Audi followed Volvo. Wagons don't sell in the US as people prefer car based CUVs which are closer in looks to the tough professional grade looking trucks/SUVs...

For the US it'll be about sedans and CUVs mostly. If Volvo could re-live the P1800 based on the coupe concept they showed last year, things might be different image-wise.

Volvo is becoming borderline Lincoln. There is some flair left, but mostly vanilla. Safety is not selling anymore because other manufacturers are taking over that baton.
