Super 88 trouble... CRACKED BLOCK

JUST KIDDING! Actually yesterday I witnessed a miracle.

I went out in the morning and got some "Marvell's Mystery Oil"

and two sets of spare keys made for the Super 88. When I

came home there were some sun showers and then it got

overcast. I was on the fence about weather or not to work on

the car finally. After about 25 minutes I have the 2-4-6-8

valve cover off and I pour some of the Mystery Oil on #2 & 8

cylinders. Those two supposedly have no compression. I call

my friend Kevin outside. (he was talking to Marcia inside) I

had him crank the car with the valve cover off so I can see

what's what. The #2/4/6/8 spark plugs have no wires, and as

he cranks the motor so I can see the valve springs & pushrods

in motion I hear a few cylinders fire. When this happened I

was stunned.

The gas in the car is 23 years old. Theoretically it's not even

combustible any more... it's crap. I have him crank it again &

this time I'm sure that the opposite 4 cylinders that are actually

getting ignition (1,3,5,7) were firing. After pouring a capfull of

Marvell's on the valve stems/springs the car's right cylinder

bank gets reassembled and I pour the remainder of the 2 quarts

or Marvell's down the oil fill.

The plan is to crank it for a while and just get some of the

Marvell's down the cylinder heads. Then we'll go syphon the

$hit gas out of it and refill it with super 93, octane booster & lead

additive.

I crank the motor without touching the gas, choke or anything, just

sit inside the car & turn the ignition key like 3 sec. What happens

next stuns me. The car starts up and revs to about 2000 rpm

then just seconds later starts settling to idle. I get out of the car

in utter amazement, stare at Kevin & high-five him as I start

yelling & laughing. I just hit the Lottery. This car was bought cheap

because it was supposed to require a valve-job and now after $12

of Marvell's it starts up cold without even so much as a pump of

the gas pedal.

So I shut her down, grabbed 6 gallons of Mobil 93 & octane booster

from the gas station down the street and poured it in. I figured if it

runs on the crap in the tank then I'll just water it down with the good

stuff and burn off all of it.

I yard drove the car for a while & then did some safety checks, right

as I slam the hood down SP pulls up with a buddy. I start the car for

him but swore him to secrecy so that XP would not find out.

Half an hour later we hit the road... me in the Super 88 leading the

way and SP in my Datsun (along with his buddy and Sofia in the baby

seat) 6 miles later we pull up to the Autozone parking lot and I call up

XP on my cell. I tell him this crazy story about how the pushrods,

valve stems, valve springs & rockers have surface rust on them and

how the car's motor is FUBAR. Right as I ask him who could rebuild

my motor on a budget I pull up to the picture window of AutoZone

with the Super 88's high beams on and I honk the air horn.

XP stares out the window at the sight of the car and his jaw just drops

like a sack of potatoes. He drops the phone like a soldier in Normandy

with Shell Shock and walks outside to see & hear the car at idle.

For those of you fellow nerds who even care here's a couple videos,

So there you have it... I must have a Four Leaf Clover in my wallet or

something. I started up a 42 year old car last night that has not run in

almost a quarter century. Then drove it 13.0 miles just for the shock &

awe factor, picked up lead addative, did a tune up & tinkered with the

carb etc.

It's getting better all the time!

Okay... so how about that Laurel Festival Car Show? :D

I think a Supper 88 would look mighty fine sitting in front of the Courthouse. Actually, anywhere in Historic Brookville. You know... it's very interesting to see historic cars parked along Main Street in such a historic town. It's like... a flashback for car enthusiasts. I think you'd love it. I really do. You should come. I'll... pay $30 of your gas. I will. Just come... haha... :P

If it was possible for me to sqeeze it into my schedule you

would need not bribe me with gas money. Next year, it's

very possible I could make it down, just give us all advance

notice. I'd love to do a roadtrip like that in the Super 88. :)

That's right my high compression 1964 Olds takes gas that is not even

sold to the consumer anymore. LEADED premium that was by far better

than the crap they give us today. Some of those Sunoco super-blends

from back in the 60s were probably the equivelant of 102 octane. I'm

happy to report that by driving the Super 88 for 13 miles yesterday I

managed to offset three years of Toyota Prius production. :D

Well, as much as the kid inside wants to blast down rt.495 down

to PA & N.J. it's not going to happen for a while. If nothing else

I need to do a coolant flush, oil change, carb. rebuild, two new

headlights, four new tires, brake shoes & brake bleed, vaccum

hoses, new fan belts and most important of all the timing is

probably about 179* off.

But assuming the radiator & rear end and all the other weak

points are good afterwards and all the aforementioned fixes go

well I will take this Rocket on a few monumental road trips. :)

She was itching to get back out there on the road again.  Excellent!

Yes indeed she's just beggin' to be driven, smooths out @ low-rpm

top gear coasting. Honestly the car is not up for long distance

driving but for a vehicle that sat unmoved in some cold & clammy

garage for most of the past quarter century it drives pretty damn

good. I'd much rather be driving the Super Eighty8 instead of the

Mad Max Camaro if it came down to it. Who needs speed when the

suspension & brakes are not up to snuff. The Super's bias ply tires

are probably still better than that junkyard rubber on the Camaro.

Today:

Two new sealed beams: the old ones self destructed the

second they were turned on, three decade + old lights

probably were not the best idea anyway, one less thing

to worry about. The high beams are fine and work well

which is surprising. Love that floor mounted switch.

I also did the fan/alternator/H20/P.S. belts. 2 all togeather.

Next is a coolant flush, oil change & rear end fluid change.

Hopefully all by the end of next week, depending on how

much work end up coming our way these next few days.

Cant' turn down any clients, business has been poor as of

late and we NEED the money.

I'm sorry I forgot to respond... meant to and then forgot.

This is my first experience with Marvell's Mystery Oil, so I

can tell you only what I know. It dates back to 1923 and

untill recently came in a metal can, so you know it's good

enough for decades of customers.

All I know is that is claims to be a super lubricant, it's

supposed to restore lost compression & do all kinds of

wonderfuly crazy awsome things to a tired old motor. I

was going to try it based on just XP's recomendation but

then several other people said the exact same thing, that

Marvell's was MADE for exactly that kind of problem. Low

compression due to a stuck valve? dump in a bunch of

Marvell's and crank the motor enough times to get it up &

inside of every nook & cranny.

After my experience I'll recomend you not only try it on

your motor but hell I'll say buy stock in the company. :D

The one thing people differ on is how much to use & what

manner to use it on the motor. XP says use a quart of

Marvell's every oil change in place of your oil, but an

engine builder told me to dump in a bunch for my stuck

valve problem but not to run the motor with it for long.

I added 2 quarts of M.M.O. to my motor oil and I plan on

doing an oil change in the next few days to get it out. The

car is dumping out MASSIVE amounts of carbon monoxide

out of its single exhaust. I'm not sure if it has anything to

do with the Marvell's though, I mean the car has been

waiting to be back on the road for over two decades.

Anyone else have any advice on Marvell's? GM1 mentioned

in a PM to me that his family has been using it since forever

and a day... who else?

Nice Olds, Sixty8! This is the first I've heard about it! That thing sure is a beast...and I noticed that the windshield wipers do the same thing as my Lumina, where they kinda cross over each other...you don't really see that on cars very often.

Basically Marvel Mystery Oil is a really thin oil that has alot of detergents added to help clean out an engine. The thin oil is just to ensure the detergents get to where they need to be. People like to add it to their gas because it soaks into and eventually loosens any carbon that may be in your engine which eventually breaks off and heads out the exaust pipe. People also add it to their oil because helps clean out any sludge that may be in there.

If you are going to add it to your gas, use only the recomended amount on the can/bottle for the amount of fuel in your tank. Your car is fuel injected so unless it has really been running poorly for a long time you shouldn't have too much carbon to worry about. Fuels are cleaner nowadays as well so you should have even less carbon to worry about. For a fuel injected car like yours I would recomend a fuel injector cleaner before using Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas. Berrymans Chemtool Total Fuel System Cleanup is good stuff and I use it on every engine I have. Does a great job and is only about $5 a bottle at Wal-Mart.

For an oil change, it is best to add the MMO right before you want to change the oil, go for a drive until the car is warmed up, then change it right away. Getting rid of sludge in oil is really where MMO shines. I wouldn't add some right after you change the oil then drive the car for 3,000+ miles since the viscosity of MMO is different than that of regular motor oil. You might also want to look into a motor oil for higher mileage engines since they are easier on seals and help with cold starting. Hope any of this helps.

If the car has been using the same 132k (since first oil change) as the same type

of oil (quaker State), would MMO clean out a lot of stuff?

As far as high milage oil-would my milage be too high? I wondering if it would really help at this stage....they say on the bottle to start around 75k...

All right, another thing to help with getting slude out of the engine is actually diesel fuel since it is a form of oil, just like MMO. I've used it for years now in my small motors, and use Lucas Oil Stabilizer in my cars and trucks. They all do a good job, and I can't really recommend one other the other since they've both been around for such a long time. I'm glad to hear that it fired right up like you wanted it to. Also glad to hear that its running better every time you fire it up. Just curious, does the car have power assisted brakes, or are you stucking driving it like a dump truck with manual brakes?

I learned if your trans is slipping you can put sawdust in the trans fluid and it makes it catch. (What some used car dealerships do to get rid of cars)

The VIN can tell you the date of manufacture or at least a ballpark,
