2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco Priced Under $26,000

    Hybrid-like fuel efficiency for a non-hybrid-like price

DETROIT – The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco midsize sedan will start at $25,995 when it arrives in dealerships in the first quarter next year, reinforcing the value proposition of the midsize segment’s longest-running nameplate.

The suggested retail price includes a $760 destination charge but excludes tax, title, license and dealer fees.

The 2013 Malibu Eco is Chevrolet’s most fuel-efficient Malibu ever. It is the first Chevrolet to feature General Motors’ eAssist battery electric/gas propulsion system, which uses a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator to enable regenerative braking, electric assist and start-stop functionality. That helps deliver a GM-estimated 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway.

Malibu Eco’s highway efficiency is comparable the segment’s popular full hybrids and diesels, but delivered at a lower price:

    • 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid – $29,395 / 36 mpg
    • 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI SE Diesel (with automatic) – $27,895 / 40 mpg
    • 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid – $26,660 / 39 mpg
    • 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid – $26,545 / 40 mpg

Malibu Eco is part of the all-new, 2013 Malibu lineup – Chevrolet’s first global midsize sedan – designed to give customers more style, fuel efficiency, content and features, along with the craftsmanship and dynamic capabilities rivaling high-end sedans. It has a more powerful engine – 182 hp / 134 kW – than the Fusion (156 hp / 116 kW), Camry (178 hp / 132 kW) or Passat (140 hp / 104 kW).

Product highlights for North American models include:

    • Expressive exterior designed to stand out, with a wide, athletic stance
    • Aerodynamically optimized exterior, including underbody aero enhancements and electronically controlled shutters in the lower grille that close at higher speeds to push more air over and around the vehicle
    • All-new, Chevrolet-signature dual-cockpit interior that is more spacious, features premium materials and is engineered to be the quietest in the midsize segment
    • First Chevrolet car to offer new Chevrolet MyLink connectivity, which integrates online services such as Pandora® Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®
    • European-influenced ride and handling traits
    • More safety features and technologies, including eight standard air bags, ultra-high-strength steel and rearview camera system.

    Additional fuel-saving features include:

    • Eco-specific lightweight components and systems, including an aluminum hood, aluminum rear bumper beam, low-mass carpet and dash mat and more, which save approximately 130 pounds (58 kg) over a comparably equipped non-ECO model
    • An Eco gauge in the cluster that continuously responds to driving behavior, encouraging fuel-efficient driving. An Auto Stop Indicator on the tachometer informs the driver when the engine is in start-stop mode
    • Seventeen-inch low-rolling-resistance all-season Goodyear tires
    • The eAssist system mated to a fuel-efficient 2.4L Ecotec direct-injection four-cylinder engine and next-generation six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4L engine, a variant of the same engine that was recognized as one of Ward's Ten Best Engines in 2010, is lightweight and features dual-overhead cams, direct injection, continuously variable intake and exhaust timing and electronic throttle control. It also has a lightweight aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head.

A five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well as a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty is standard on the Malibu Eco. Certain eAssist components are covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, including the electric motor generator, three-phase electric power cables and high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

The Malibu Eco is offered with cloth or leather seats in eight exterior and three interior color choices. It is well-equipped in standard form and available with four equipment packages: Package 1 – Power Convenience; Package 2 – Premium Audio; Package 3 – Leather; and Package 4 – Navigation.

I love how they conveniently ignore city fuel economy.

    Fixed:

    • 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid – $26,660 / 43 mpg
    • 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid – $29,395 / 41 mpg
    • 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid – $26,545 / 35 mpg
    • 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI SE Diesel (with automatic) – $27,895 / 30 mpg
    • 2013 Chevrolet Malibu ECO – $25,995 / 26 mpg

For an extra $665, you get 65% greater city fuel economy from Camry Hybrid.

And I love how they only factor the horsepower of the gasoline engine in those hybrids.

$26k seems a bit steep for this. If Package 1 was included with auto up windows and fog lights I would think it was a good deal. But the Malibu isn't a full hybrid, and a Fusion hybrid gets 41 mpg city compared to 26 mpg on the Malibu, big difference. The Fusion hybrid for example has standard power front seats, auto dimming mirror, rear parking aid, fog lamps, and leather steering wheel for $28,700. With the same features, the Malibu Eco and Fusion Hybrid will be really close in price, and the Fusion has that 15 mpg advantage in city.

The other question I have is what does eAssist/Eco cost, $2k maybe? So are we looking at $24k for a base Malibu? Which I am fine with if the car has the equipment to back up the price, but they seem to have most features optional.

In other news, the car really looks great. I like the shallower lower half of the split grille on this new one. The one thing I do not care for is the Christmas light look of the LED tails, I think it should be one continuous tube of light instead.

One of these with a nicer powertrain (say, the 2.5L Ecotec or a 3.6L V6 from the Impala/Xtra Too Skinny) in a coupe would be such a sweet car. A turbocharged 2.5L Ecotec with a six-speed manual in a coupe version would even possibly make a credible SS.

And yes, the Eco tube and condenser contraption costs $2000 in a Regal. It also includes tiny (by comparison) wheels that really cut the balls off the Buick's looks. No thanks.

Saw the '13 Malibu Eco in person yesterday..first '13 Malibu I've seen. The side profile and front are clean...like the design overall, though I think the taillights are a bit overwrought--they bulge out too much on the sides (esp. noticable on a white car like a saw). Sat in the front, roomy and comfortable, the controls seem well placed and solid. One area of concern, considering this is a family sedan, is the rear seat area seems cramped....with a rear door open, the actual rear door opening seems very small...I can imagine that putting in/taking out a child seat to be awkward or larger adults finding the opening too small...guess that's where the wheelbase shortening went..

I was in the Malibu ECO today. While I know it is built on a good platform that also is shared with the Regal I just was not drawn to it.

Compared to the present car it has a few features I like better but as an overall package I felt let down a little.

I also saw the new Fusion. GM is in a world of hurt if the Fusion is not much more expensive. It is a really appealing car inside and out. If the quality is on par with the Taurus it should prove to be a good car.

I also spent some time in some of the Hyundai's and Kia. They have mastered the ability to make a cheap car look much better than it really is. I know they are not the best car on the market but they are looking like the best value and that is what hard economic times require.

For the money I would just pass the Bu up and buy the Regal I just hope there is a RS or SS package at a resonable price and some styling changes. The Malibu is not bad looking it just is not as good as some of the new cars out there like the Fusion. I hate to say that as I am not a Ford fan in anyway.

    • Yeah, it doesn't seem super space efficient.
    • So three major problems with this car, one, terrible Jellybean external shape, not impressed at all with the style. Second is the buttonless dash having everything via a touch screen and rotary knob, terrible safety issue as your eyes will be off the road more than on trying to find the right option in the right menu. Third is the center pack clearly cuts into valuable leg space based on their own picture. This is a hard pass.
    • Great Masculine shape, really digging the style they did here.
    • First seen at the Shanghai Auto Show (see article: Polestar 4 - The New Breed of Electric SUV Coupe), Polestar brought the Polestar 4 to the New York International Auto Show for North Americans to see in person. Polestar calls the Polestar 4 an "electric SUV 4-door coupe". Outside of that marketing speak, the Polestar 4 is a slightly lifted four-door hatchback about 190 inches in length, or roughly 2 inches shorter than a Toyota Camry.  Built without rear glass, the Polestar 4 makes use of a rear camera for visibility astern. Polestar 4 features a plethora of standard content, including 20-inch 5 V-spoke black diamond cut alloy wheels, panoramic glass roof, adaptive cruise control, 360 parking camera with 3D view, energy saving heat pump, front-illuminated Polestar logo, e-latch doors, power-operated tailgate with soft close, Polestar digital key, wireless phone charging, and 8-way electrical driver seat and 6-way electrical passenger seat. The fastest production car the brand has ever developed to date, Polestar 4 can accomplish a 0-60 mph sprint in 3.7 seconds and in top spec can produce 544 horsepower. Long-range single-motor variants have 272 horsepower and a targeted EPA range of over 300 miles. All long range variants have a 102 kWh battery capable of 200 kW charging on a DC Fast Charger and 11 kW on home level-2 charging. Google built-in is ... built in and includes Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play. Polestar continues to offer a leading connected in-car experience. As with all other Polestar cars, regular over-the-air updates allow for new features and improvements to be sent remotely to all vehicles. Pricing starts at $54,900, with orders opening in April for deliveries in the latter half of this year.   View full article
