May 3, 2011

By now most of you have heard that Chevy is doing a final update to the aging full sized Impala. Well those changes had finally hit the dealerships parts books. We knew about the 3.5 and 3.9 liter V6es being replaced with the High Feature 3.6 producing 302 horsepower while maintaining the Impala's FlexFuel designation and the 4-speed auto shifting to GM's 6-speed unit. But lets get the low down on the other changes. While we had hoped that a new Impala would be waiting on the lots for us in 2012 (2010?) These updates aren't a bad thing for a proven platform. As is, we're waiting till at least the 2014 model year before a full replacement will land.

Update: NEW! Engine, 3.6L SIDI DOHC V6 VVT (302 hp [225.2 kW] @ 6800 rpm, 252 lb-ft of torque [340.2 N-m] @ 5300 rpm)

For review, here is the list of published changes:

Deletions

(80U) Red Jewel Tintcoat exterior color

(R6J) Additional 9 months of XM Radio service

(PCK) Luxury Edition Package (for 2012, would now order LTZ model)

(QB5) 16" steel wheels

(PY0) 16" 5-spoke cast styled aluminum wheels

(RS8) 17" fascia spoke wheels

Fog lamps on LT model

(LZE) 3.5L V6 engine

(LGD) 3.9L V6 engine

New Features

(LFX) 3.6L V6 DOHC SIDI engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and 6-speed automatic transmission

(FHS) E85 FlexFuel capable

New front grille and fog lamps

New rear end appearance with dual exhaust outlets standard on all trims

(GAR) Black Granite Metallic exterior color (extra cost)

(GBE) Crystal Red Tintcoat exterior color (extra cost, not available at start-up)

New interior woodgrain trim

(70*) Two-tone Neutral interior

New leather shift knob, standard on LT and LTZ models

(PDC) LS OnStar and Bluetooth Package (Fleet orders)

(PDV) LT Sunroof Package (Retail and Fleet orders)

(PDD) LT OnStar and Bluetooth Package (Fleet orders)

(RV5) new design 16" aluminum wheels

Changes

(RS7) replaces RPO code (PFH) for the 17" machined aluminum wheels

(RSX) replaces RPO code (NW2) for the 18" machined aluminum wheels

(MX0) Automatic transmission changed from 4-speed to 6-speed

Now standard on LS Retail: leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth for phone and floor mats

Now standard on LT Retail: Cloth flip-and-fold rear seat and rear spoiler

According to our dealer contact:

The "new" grilles for the LS are the same as the ones used in the 2006 SS model, part number and all.

The LT grille appears to be similar but different part numbers. The fascias remain the same as 2011, part numbers don't change.

The new 16" wheel (RV5) is the same as was offered on the 2008-2010 Saturn Vue and Chevy Captiva.

The V6 engine part numbers are new, but the transmission is shared with the Buick Lacrosse.

RV5 16" Wheel

Subtle but substantive refinements. They've got this thing down to a science. They're sending it off well. It'll be fun spotting these. I wonder when they're coming out?

The changes, it seems to me, are aimed at increasing its appeal as a retail vehicle. I think it will hold its own for a while longer. These changes can only help.

With 288hp and a better tranny this Impala will probably match, if not beat, the performance of the 5.3L Impala SS. Impressive.

Would love to see the MSRP.

Even though it'll be shy by approximately 60lb-ft torque?

So, the change in the grille is simply from black horizontal lines to a black diamond pattern? I just feel they could have done SOMETHING a little more dramatic.

Would it surprise any of you to learn that I'd really like to test one out? I have a long love affair with the W-body (second favorite platform after the E-bodies) and I think this engine + transmission could really change the character of the car. Not that the current one is bad just that it's old.

The 5.3L had its torque limited by the PCM so that it wouldn't rip up the transmission and cause ridiculous torque steer. I still think it'll be a wash between the two.

Getting near SS level performance, good mileage, and FlexFuel for the price of a base Impala is a very tempting proposition, 20 year old platform or not.

So the Impala LS now gets the old SS grille... wow, big change...

I have an '06 Impala SS that I love, but I'm ready for a new car -- it'll be interesting to see what the new LT and LTZ look like -- Hopefully they do something with the rear deck, including round taillights --- never was a fan of those triangular lights that looked like so many other cars -- Some interior upgrades wouldn't hurt, either...

Sounds like a solid, reliable car that people who do not care for all the bleeding edge technology will love to have for 5 to 10 years. I expect these cars will last a long time. Nice way to close out this old model line.

I really would have liked to have seen two very small (and simple in my opinion), additions to the change list: The radio from the Malibu that has the USB support input and throw the auto-climate control from the Lucerne into it for the LT/LTZ.

That would be a very good option to add, too bad they did not do that. Course who is to say someone does not update this again. It could show up if GM is watching our chat. :D

The W-body is like a cockroach...almost 30 years old and still not dead.

Well, more like 24 years (though there have been many changes since the GM10)...maybe they are trying to break the Panther's record (or the Dodge van)..

You're right. If they haven't put auto-climate control in the car in this or the last gen (no clue about the gen before), why start now? I just don't understand why the lower Malibu has had it and gets dual zone in the 2013, but the car above it doesn't get it.

Anyone know if remote start will defrost the car if it doesn't have auto-climate control? Cause I LOVE that on the Lucerne--heats the mirrors, defrosts the front/rear windows, heats the leather... get in and you're good to go.

I'd also like to know what: "New rear end appearance with dual exhaust outlets standard on all trims" means. I mean, is it simply saying new rear end appearance because there are dual exhausts and a spoiler is standard on LT/LTZ trims or are we actually going to see tweaked taillights?

Dual exhaust on all models, no other changes to the rear at this time.

Re: the v8.....it had a crappy 4 speed. The new 6 speed will do a far better job taking advantage of big ponies under the hood.

Yeah but the V8 gave the car some actual character.

well, until the tranny blew up.

we have a GXP G8 on our lot right now....took it for a spin recently.....that 4 speed holds it back. the GXP is nice to drive (nothing special) but the Impala SS v8 did not have a driving experience to go with the engine. The Impala SS was just a motor to an otherwise boring and sedate car.

Uh... the GXP G8 only comes with a 6-speed Manual, the GT G8 comes with a 6-spd automatic. They never made a V8 G8 with a 4-speed.

True, plus you get a bigger car to boot.

Putting the Cruze idea on hold until I know more...

Yup. There was no 4-speed on ANY trim of the G8.

I was thinking he might have meant G6 GXP... but I don't think that ever had a 4-speed, either.

Oh well, so much for credibility... ;-) Don't buy a Pontiac from his lot... its got a busted transmission.

Probably meant GP GXP...the Grand Prix was offered w/ the same V8/ 4spd setup as the Impala SS..

I like these changes to the Impala actually. This car needs a more modern drive train for sure. I see TONS of 2006 + Impalas on the road and as far as nondescript 4 doors go, it's a pretty good looking car. I drove one as a rental once too - and it struck me as they type of car I would be in the market for with about 10,000 miles on it because I could probably get a screaming deal on one. (If I was in the market for just basic point A to point B family hauler)

But this nameplate deserves to be on a much higher profile, very well executed rear drive sedan. My 68 Impala had some real character to it. There were coupes, fast backs, convertibles, SS packages, etc..that made that car super awesome. I know the Camaro more or less fits the need for the rear drive V8 coupe and convertible buyers these days, but I know there's a solid market right now for rear drive sedans.

My suggestion to GM = build an Impala sedan and coupe off the new CTS platform with current Chevy styling. Give the base model this new 6 cylinder engine, then have a more powerful V6 in the middle, and then offer an SS version (for both sedan and coupe) with the LSA motor.

I gave up dreaming of a RWD Impala years ago, as GM has made it loud and clear that the next Impala will be Epsilon II - probably a heavily decontented Chevrolet version of the XTS.

Well, there was no V8 in the G6. But you're right, he probably meant the GP.

So, lemme ask... the 4-speed held back the 5.3L V8. What about the FWD Northstars? I assume the same deal.

northstars are not the quickest cars by 2011 standards......a lot of 4's and 6's have been able to outrun the northstar to 60 with similar size and or weights

Right, the engine gave the boring car some actual character. With the 3.6 its still a boring car just with a modern V6. Big deal.

The Impala SS had NO character. that's for sure. A base Passat was far more fun to drive................

At least the v6 impala won't have the presumptuous SS badge on it. And at least it will have a real transmission in it.

No character. There are buyers who buy reliable, no character cars. Mind you, they tend to buy Hondas and Toyotas more often than not.

Then again, the Impy could use the new powertrain. I just wish the RWD, character driven Impala was here now rather than in three years, if only to compete with the Dodge Charger. C'mon GM! You can do it!

The Impala will not be RWD in 3 years or ever. It will move to the Epsilon II platform in about 3 years. GM may import the Holden Commodore here again as a Chevrolet in a few years, but even that program is iffy.

That is rather lame. If GM does import that Commodore as a Caprice available for civilian as well as police duty, that should suffice.

Just to update.... the Impala is getting a NEW! Engine, 3.6L SIDI DOHC V6 VVT (302 hp [225.2 kW] @ 6800 rpm, 252 lb-ft of torque [340.2 N-m] @ 5300 rpm)

Honestly, 302hp on ALL trims caught me off guard. It's like GM finally said "let's have some fun."

I bought this car and am having issues with engine. There is a noticable hesitation when accelerating at low speed, engine goes flat and feels like it will stall out, also have had backfiring occur, brought to dealership and they found nothing in VCM. I think Chevrolet needs to rethink there fuel calibrations.

Once you push accelerator to the floor the car goes well it shifts at 6500 rpm and sounds great, but gives very poor fuel economy I average 13mpg mostly city driving and some highway.
