So to separate the 2 door from the 4 door they create the 4 Series.

3 Series= 4 door

4 Series = 2 door

But now they are going to build the 4 Series Gran Coupe, which is just a f'n 4 door with a hatchback

http://www.carscoops.com/2013/11/spied-bmw-4-series-wears-fours-doors.html

So they'll have a 4 door in a 4 Series, but it will be a "Coupe."

Screw you BMW.

Check the facts..the 4 series Gran Coupe is the 4dr coupe, not a hatchback. The hatchback is the 3 series Gran Turismo. It's the same strategy w/ the 5 and 6...the 5 series has a Gran Turismo hatchback, the 6 has a Gran Coupe 4dr coupe.

I wonder if they will follow this pattern w/ the 1 and 2 series eventually.

It is interesting how BMW is able to leverage synergies to create multiple models out of one basic compact line...while other car makers may offer only a 4dr and maybe a coupe in their compact RWD luxury line, BMW will have 6 body styles across the 3/4 range..

Walt's point was regarding the door count, not the hatch/non-hatch feature.

Perhaps, but he specifically said hatchback (in bold above). Not the case w/ the Gran Coupe. The Gran Turismo is a hatchback.

OK, so it's really worse:

3 Series = 4 or 5 door

4 Series = 2 or 4 door

If that's good synergy, they can keep it.

6 different bodystyles, though...lots of variety...4dr sedan, wagon, hatchback, 2dr coupe, convertible, 4dr coupe...same with the 5 and 6 series.

^ They really do seem to be legitimately struggling for direction (tho BMW is a bit more grounded than MB).

BMW is pulling a 'toyota' in currently combining 3-series & 4-series models as one sales total (IE: camry & solara). One would think they'd sooner combine the platform mates 5 & 7 before the former.

I had thought I read more than once that BMW was splitting the 3 along door count, but via their current website, that doesn't seem to be the case. I guess the general assumption is it'll get straightened out eventually. Or maybe its closer to the truth than no one really cares.

^ The german duo (MB & BMW) are so engrossed in maximizing sales, I don't think they have the management sense to turn things around that quickly.

i just read the article in C/D today where they raked the MB CLA over the coals. MB and BMW's quest for volume and banking it on its fashion value may come back to bite them in the ass very hard. I don't think we'll see it in full force till the 3 cylinder front drive BMW's hit the market though!

I think Cadillac has a good thing going. Settle on fewer body styles.

MB, Audi, BMW, really are desperate to court the status conscious millenial types and otherwise fashion seekers.....get em into the fold, maybe on their first new car and try to generate even more brand loyalty.

The problem with BMW's 4-door coupes is they don't look like coupes. At least a Mercedes CLS looks different from an E-class sedan or coupe. The Gran Turismo hatch things look dumb also, I think BMW is looking for niche vehicles to get sales because they can't keep up with Mercedes. The C-class is closing in on the 3-series in sales, and Mercedes has a lockdown on the E-class and S-class segments.
