Jaguar News: Spying: Jaguar's Compact Sedan Is Slowly Coming To Shape

It has been a long time coming, but it happened this week. A spy photographer got the first shots of Jaguar's new XS compact sedan in what appears to be its production ready design this week. Under heavy camouflage, we can make out the new XS having similar proportions to the XF midsize sedan. Both appear to have a similar front clip with the oval shaped grille and elongated headlights. Around back, the XS looks to have a shorter decklid.

Powertrains are expected to be 2.0L Turbocharged four and 3.0L Supercharged six for the U.S. All-wheel drive is expected, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The XS is expected to be shown as a concept later this year at the Paris Motor Show, with the production model being shown at Geneva in 2015.

Small and non descreat, guess we really are headed to small engines and small auto's. Over all has the jag look but is nothing special at this point since you cannot see any curves or lines that would say YES, this is a sexy animal.

Jaguar makes great looking cars, you just have to hope they can keep the reliability up. A lot of their cars are cramped on the inside, roomier interiors would be a nice thing.

If you're worried about the most cubic feet of passenger room for your dollar, go buy a Genesis and get ignored by the parking attendant. If you want something to be looked at in, get the Jag.

The XF is in part handicapped by the long overhangs and mass of the DEW98 platform (think Lincoln LS / Ford Thunderbird). The XS is unconstrained by 1990s antics... and it should be interesting. The 2.0L Jaguar engine is rather uninspiring -- it's basically the 2.0 Ecoboost -- being slower on response and inferior in output to most of the competition. The 3.0 V6 is not bad @ 340 bhp although I threw a rod bearing on a loaner from the dealer (LOL) if they'll allow the owner to permanently turn off that annoying start-stop feature.

Even the XJ which isn't saddled with the Ford platform is cramped inside compared to an S-class or 7-series. I love how Jaguars look and the interiors are well styled, they just don't have as much room as competitors. It always seems like Jaguar lags a bit in function or technology compared to the Germans which obviously have more money to spend developing a car.

I agree with Dwight, the 2.0T is an ecoboost, nothing thrilling there for Jaguar pricing, the 3.0 V6 seems good, 340 or 380 hp and it gets decent gas mileage. In a car this small it should fly, the C-class is getting a 339 hp V6, so it would line up well with that Mercedes is doing. Even on my car which is nearing 4,000 lbs 340 hp would be enough, my car has more power than I can really use.
