GM News: General Motors' Next Infotainment System To Be Based On Android

General Motors is turning to Android to power its next-generation infotainment system. According to Automotive News, Harman International CEO Dinesh Paliwal made the announcement during a conference call discussing quarterly earnings.

“As you would expect, this next-generation infotainment solution will enable an app store, which allows this infotainment system to stay technologically relevant over the life cycle of the vehicle. Apps will be developed by General Motors, Harman and a bunch of other third parties, not just Google and Apple," said Paliwal.

Harman won the $900 million contract back in 2012 and has been working closely with Google on the system. It should be stressed that this system isn't anything like the recently announced Android Auto system which allows the Android OS to be projected on the vehicle's infotainment system.

No mention of when this system will debut, or what vehicle it will appear in first.

This is a great move.. and yes it will be more seamless. In the newer Mylink cars I am having literally no issue sending music via Bluetooth from my Galaxy. Spotify, Pandora, iHeart, Tune-In, etc work perfectly.

It drives my phone nuts and doesn't actually play any music.  I have a Galaxy S4.

Edit.. I see an Encore in your vehicles section. I haven't tried it in the Encore. In my ex's Verano I had no issue hooking her Android up. She has a LG Viper 4GLTE and no issues. In my Yukon, Vette, and Impala I've had no issues either with going BT or USB. In the CTS-V I haven't tried anything other than the USB Flash or the HDD that's in the car

I don't think it will be a good idea to have an appstore for a device in the car. There's literaly no use. All the cars need is a GPS, music player, and those who are busy with phone calls then a bluetooth-ready device for wireless calling. What else would they need, games?

Only if it was self driving so they could play without causing an accident. But then people are doing this already while they drive on their cell phones.

I reckon that, the Android system may help the driver when they tired and use that to control the car so relvies them and can relax that would be cool if they made the system that way and does the work for you. Some cars already have the internet in them which would be good just use the screen in the car while parked or have the passenger use it while you are driving the car and search for what you want or check the emails. Technology has improved and also, has gotten advanced as new cars come out and it may even have more feautres in the car we don't know yet.

This was inevitable because tablets are more useful these days and the range of wireless connectivity on tablets make the navigation more useful and more updated. I'm glad that cars are now more dependable without having to upgrade the system after purchasing the car. Most old nav systems are useless.

The truth is that I didn't know the news. Good news, I like and support this decision. Always technology are in everything and vehicles are no exception. Thanks for sharing the news. My regards
