C/D Comparo: Camaro vs. Mustang

Recommended Posts

The acceleration numbers appear fairly consistent with MT: a half-second advantage to 60 for the Camaro, increasing to seven-tenths in the quarter. Braking shows a similar advantage. And the Camaro even got better rated AND observed FE numbers.

Excellence of Execution.

More power will give you those benefits.

How soon before they bring it up to snuff in the other short comings.

Okay. Let me be the one to tell what you didn't catch on to yesterday. In your rush to use the MT article on the GT as your evidence of a more refined car, you missed the part in the article where they were comparing it to a 2015 Camaro, not the 2016.

From the article that you backed.

"The interior is nice, too. Get in a fifth-generation Camaro (even the SS 1LE), and you're reminded constantly that you're sacrificing for performance."

Just wanted to clarify that for you because you might have missed that when it was brought up four days ago in the GT thread here.

Good to know. So if they do an LT4 version I can expect it to get even better FE numbers?

And check out the size of that fuel tank. Guess they just chose a different priority for packaging instead of truly having less room.

The bigger gas tank is a trade off for the less than useless trunk. I haven't seen such a useless trunk since my last MR2. Of course, that's not the primary goal with this car or any pony car but it would be nice to have a larger opening for it.

So the article I read in the December issue of Motor Trend, with the 6th gen camaro and Mustang on the FREAKING COVER......was an illusion?

There is even 34 forum pages on the issue over at MT, of which you have many posts, complete with mod warnings just prior to locking it.  Is that your goal yet again here?

I read that as well and they said that there ergonomics and such were close enough to not matter. Performance, on the other hand (and that is what these cars are about despite your statements to the contrary), is all Camaro at this point, hence them giving the nod to the Camaro.

BTW, next time you should clarify which GT article you are talking about since there are clearly two in question.

Oh and who can't even post there anymore and who was told to stop bringing up MT drama here before the thread here was locked? Yeah, that's what I thought. (never mind the fact that you are delusional is you think I was the sole reason for it getting locked because you obviously did not read the posts by certain Ford fanboys there who were called out multiple times).

Yes, well. Whatever.

So, Car and Driver basically gave all the good feels to the Camaro. I think if you look at the performance charts that the Mustand had a slightly lower c/g (which they promptly squandered in the handling) and was a bit quieter under full throttle (uh... yay?). But that's it.

Man. Ford needs to get back in the game ASAP. After all, it was about this timeframe in the LS smallblock's lifetime that GM gave it a power boost...

Even more hilarious is claiming a "refinement" edge against a car with Cadillac underpinnings. That doesn't even merit explaining at this point.

I'm a little surprised that the more powerful car had better MPGs though.

It's not that bad a trunk. Besides, the back seats are good parcel shelves.

Way to turn the tables on me, after getting schooled surreal.  I clearly stated the same thing about the magazine issue in the thread that was locked yesterday.  Did you even bother to read that?  We know you did not bother to read the MT thread you so clearly debated in.

Anyway, can't wait to see what camaro has in store for the top dog Mustang.

I have the magazine at home, as a matter of fact. However, I made my point and you have chosen to ignore it but that's okay. I've had my fun.

Why, thank you kind sir.

Actually, if you were referring to the C/D article, you could possibly scan and post some more-I'm sure it would be quite instructive. But only if you want to. I'm sure the whole thing will be available online soon enough.

I don't know man. I'm a little spoiled with having a car with a ton of space and after test driving a Camaro and a Challenger last year and doing a thorough walk around, the Challenger is the hands down winner in that department.

No way am I letting you off this easy surreal.  You do this crap all the time.

In this very thread, 4th post down, your point.....CLEARLY.....was that I was wrong and I have since proven I was right.  Now you claim you made your point and off you go.

Good.

Oh, for sure the Challenger is the better road trip car for space. I've been in the back seat of a Challenger, it's actually livable.

I loved it. I know it's not a canyon carver like the Camaro or Stang but it is far more livable for me. Being that is pretty much the same dimensions up front as my Magnum, that is a huge plus for me. I love the room in it.

Whew! Just glad I was let off easy here though. That was really bothering me.

Actually, I was looking over old tests of the 392 Challengers. Some of their numbers are pretty comparable to the Mustang's. If you're looking for a bit more practicality and still want respectable numbers...

Money willing, I'd love a CPO 392 in gun metal gray!

...I mean, here we have a perfectly ordinary SS that will run 12.3@116 in the quarter and pulls 0.98g sustained. That's some tall order to match for a car that weighs about the same and has a lot less torque.

And then, there's that price. And the options packages. It's like Ford has to pull out all the stops just to stay in the game, and GM is just limbering up.

Weighing less and having more gears will do that.

No doubt. Crazy that some can't admit that GM knocked it out of the park on this Camaro, where the previous gen. was a solid double.

The last generation was a full size sedan that was converted into a sports coupe.  It weighed too much but it still brought it to the Mustang in both performance and sales right up until the final years.  Mustang is enjoying a great sales year this year while it's primary competitor is in a transition year.   The true test will be when production of the Camaro is in full swing in the spring.

Ive got the date etched on my wedding band on the inside.  And her too, while our names our on it. Hers in mine and mine in hers.

It also helps that my son was born on the 5th of June while our wedding day was on the 7th.

PS: Happy Anniversary that is not quite an anniversary, Drew.

About that Camaro.

How 'bout that new Camaro?

Awesome aint it?

Id say yes.

However, if I was buying  pony car, it'd be the Mustang.  GT or GT350.

Why? I like the look better.

I still cant get past that Transformers connection. Im trying hard to accept it. I cant.

I find the Alpha Camaro is just sublime in looks. It captures perfectly the 1st gen Camaro. Just how the the Mustang was in 2005.

However, the more I look at the new Mustang, the more I love it. With the Camaro, the more I look at it, I marvel  how fast and composed it really is. I marvel how slim and athletic and American it looks, and then the 2008 New Camaro  Bumblebee screams at me!

Well, I can at least comfort you with the news that if you got a Mustang you would never have to concern yourself with the looks of the Bumblebee Camaro again.

The new car's taillights look more like a Corvette's :P

Speaking of which...I did the trick or treat thing tonite with my kids...

One of my neighbors, 2 streets down, got himself a brand new Z06. White.

Alls I can say is wow. Its quite the stunner in person.

Another on the same street has a brand new Volt. Blue. That too looks good. In pictures it looks like a Honda Civic. Not so much in person.

Same street, as its a huuuuge crescent with another inner crescent...well, many new Cadillacs. The ATS. At least 5. One of which is the coupe. All with the 2.0T.

Back to the Camaro.

Its such a confusing thing for me.  I just took my wife's Fusion in for the 2 recalls on it and at the same time I put on the mandatory winters on, and in the showroom was a couple of Mustangs. One ecoboost and one white 5.0 GT with all kinds of aerodynamic ground effect spoilers, I think from the factory.  No, not a special trimmed Mustang, just a regular 5.0, anyway, it was white with black wheels and the spoilers were also black. What a gorgeous lookin' thing.

I go back and forth to what pony car I would want  had I been in the market for one, but that white 5.0 GT that is in the Ford showroom close to my home as we speak would probably be THE one. Granted, I have not seen the Camaro in person, so that opinion might change again, but as it stands right now, at 9:35 PM Eastern October 31, 2015, its that white 5.0 Mustang GT at Advantage Ford dealership in Pincourt Quebec that is winning my heart.

I've seen a lot of new Z06 Vettes in Sherwood Park Chevy. They look vicious.

The Volt is what it is. I do wish it didn't look so much like a Civic, but it is what it is.

Cadillac is making inroads. Make no mistake.

I do not think the Mustang is a bad-looking car so much as it is a corporate-looking one. People call it a Fusion coupe like its some kinda insult but the reality is that was Ford's intent with the S550, in accordance with One Ford. I don't like the back end though-it's legitimately bad. And of course it's now a generation behind the Camaro for performance.

Oh man, I love the new Mustang's looks.  And from behind, that wiiiide, low ass just makes me... *whew*.  It looks like it is low to the road, but springing, like a cobra.  Or an untamed horse of some sort.  Yesterday, I sawr a man in his 60's-70's in a shiny new black GT with black wheels, and red rocker and hood stripes.  Sweet looking ride, gramps!

But in my head and on the Camaro configurator, I built a Blue Velvet SS with black leather and the black, redline wheels and it brought me to the edge.  TOO MUCH, man!

And again... how do we know for sure when Ford is so gun shy?

Nice symbolism with spelling out the Shelby's name going straight down though. After all, it's entirely possible

It's funny when one brings up "pipeline dreams" when they are guilty of pulling that tactic themselves every time a Mustang loses a comparison to the Camaro.

"Just wait two more years and Ford will update that power and tranny to beat the Camaro" or something to that effect. I mean all it needs is more gear and more power right? That is the very definition of "pipeline dreams".

Tomorrow is for Little Orphan Annie and Cubs fans. Today, the Camaro is just destroying. It is fun to watch, not so much because of who is being destroyed, but because it is firm evidence of what hard work and a deep toolbox can accomplish.

It is an astonishing machine, regardless of segment. A car for the ages.
