Buick Has High Expectations For Avenir, But Not High Pricing

      Slow and steady

GMC's Denali subbrand has been a huge success for General Motors. According to GM CEO Mary Barra, Denali-badged models now account for almost 30 percent of GMC retail sales, bringing in higher margins and average transaction prices. With Buick launching their Avenir subbrand, GM hopes for the same success.

"Avenir already seems to be capturing the imagination. It just seems to have something maybe in the same way Denali has something," said Duncan Aldred, GM's vice president for Buick and GMC to Automotive News.

But Buick knows they have to go slow and steady with the rollout of Avenir. One of the key reasons Denali has enjoyed immense success is that GMC allowed it to grow organically and slowly. Like GMC, Buick has only introduced one model with the Avenir trim, the 2018 Enclave. There are plans to roll out Avenir to other models, but Buick hasn't decided if it will do all of their models like GMC does with Denali.

"Whether we make the investment for what would be a somewhat limited volume, we'll see," said Aldred.

Buick is also making sure that it prices Avenir correctly so it doesn't push customers away. According to Automotive News, the base price of the Enclave Avenir ($54,410 with destination) is 33 percent higher than the base model. That may seem like a lot, but it pales in comparison to the 55 percent premium the Acadia Denali has over the base model.

"We certainly didn't want to price it too high. We weren't going to overprice this to begin with, for sure," said Aldred.

Into the mid $50s seems like a lot for a Buick or GMC crossover, but they'll find some people that will pay it.  If there are people out there paying $48k for an Explorer, someone will pay $54k for an Enclave.

Question is how many dollars is GM losing on Avenir and Denali SUVs that could have been Cadillacs if Cadillac had a crossover to sell?    That same person that spends $55k on an Acadia Denali might have spent $65k on a Cadillac XT7 if it existed.

I suspect that the XT7 will have CT6 pricing, if not slightly higher.  Gotta make those fat profit margins for Cadillac.

As for the Avenir trim level, good luck in making that work.  Buick could stand to pick up a few good ideas from GMC.

I am still shocked that there isn't an Escalade-V with a 650 hp supercharged V8 for $129,000.  I mean why not, someone will pay it.  I think Cadillac could easily have an SUV above Escalade in the $150-200,000 range.  Take the CT6 plug in hybrid tech mated to the new DOHC turbo V8 for a combined 700 hp with say 25 mpg sort of ability, hand sewn interior, 1 inch thick wool carpeting,  platinum plated door sills, twice the sound isolation of a CT6, wood from trees that fell naturally on their own accord, etc

If Buick can get $59k for an Enclave more power to them. But if you are going to push Buick's pricing well into Cadillac territory why aren't they pushing Cadillac up as well, despite previous failed attempts.

I think they need to worry about more about gently getting buick and GMC where they are a bit higher...

In my eyes Caddy does not yet compete on a level where they could have a a 100k+ SUV....they need to define and refine the models they have now first.....

Buick is going into the $50s, all the way to $59k in Drew's example, GMC Yukon Denali's are $70k, maybe more than that, I don't price them out.  But both brands sell a lot in the $35-55k range.  Cadillac right not sells most of their product in the $35-65k range, outside of the Escalade.  Even well equipped or loaded XTS and XT5 are maxing at $65k and a CT6 with some options is $65k.

Cadillac isn't on the level of those with $100k+ cars, and that is the problem.  Why aren't they?  GM managed to push Buick and GMC up in price point, but Cadillac hasn't gone up in price point in 15 years just about.  The early 2000s STS and DTS with inflation were priced higher than CTS and XTS of today.

It's a good question GM needs to answer. It's one reason why it's dumb for them to try to benchmark the other two makers (Benz, BMW) when it simply best for them to due their own thing and promote that.  The reason why (Buick, GMC) gave been successful is that they are doing their own thing.....time to do that for Caddy. Define and refine are my starting choices here......

Aside from the name, which I dislike, Avenir is mainly for China. U.S. tastes are no longer Buick's priority.

...and being built in China is why I will never allow one of these to grace my driveway.  Ever.

Probably one of the most intelligent things you have said here at C and G.

Do you go into a Sushi restaurant and complain that you can't get a deli sandwich or a steak...seriously?

completely loaded Enclave Avenier AWD is $59,720, and the equipment that gets you is very competitive.

A completely loaded XT5 is $66,230... so an XT7 will go higher.... much.

Interested in seeing what an Xt7 would do...

Pardon me, then I retract my comment.  I thought production on this had moved to China also.

Maybe. With all the crazy going on daily right now, I'm not so sure automakers are willing to take that chance....

Ford already has said they are moving Focus production to China with the next generation.  Volvo I imagine will have more Chinese made cars since they have a Chinese owner.  Car companies will always look for cheaper labor and China is the land of manufacturing.   The one thing that could slow down Chinese production of cars is if the whole car is built buy robots, then you have no labor cost and who cares where the factory is at that point.

Plus with self driving cars, they can drive themselves off the assembly line onto a truck or train or boat for shipment.  Not sure if that motivates auto makers to build domestic or outsource over seas.

What Ford says and what they plan to do are different things. While that "might" be their plan- I can tell you that they are still not that sure internally what they plan to do. Rumors are still in the air if there is even going to be another generation of Focus in the US anyways...between the dropping sales and pending nasty dual clutch lawsuits coming....things are not looking good....

Volvo could be interesting.....my gut tells me that they build a plant (or buy) here in the US, though it could very well be automated.......

A conventional 6 or 8 speed auto could have saved the Focus and the Fiesta for those weenies who cannot drive a stick.  People who own these cars with manuals are wondering what all the fuss is about.

There are only 2 vehicles currently on sale in the US that are built in China.  The Buick Envision and the Volvo S60 Inscription (long wheelbase model).

CT6 Hybrid is also imported from China, if I remember correctly.

I hope Ford doesn't more the Focus plant to China.. That'd be one way to guarantee I don't buy a new one. There are too many other brands who don't manufacture in China to choose from.

@Drew Dowdell Is the Golf made in Germany or the US?

I thought the Golf was hecho en Mexico.

I know that was true way back when.

And when that was true, the VR6 variant was made in Deutschland.

Interesting to know what has happened between then (the 1990s) and now...

I think at one time maybe 15 years ago or so, Golfs in the US came from Germany and the Jettas came from Puebla, Mexico.  Not sure about today...

Um... both.  The bulk of Golf is built in Mexico. I believe the R and E are built in Wolfsburg.

    • Plastic cladding = off road.  Instead of killing the Sonata, they should just put plastic body cladding down the side and raise the price by $10k and call it the Sonata HD Overlander X.  Instant hit.
    • Considering a planet with 8 Billion and he sold almost 2 million cars, then he is covering .025% of the population compared to other auto companies. I think 2024 going into 2025 we will see other auto companies top Tesla. You and I are two peas in a pod as I also was up on a hill watching the implosion and thinking what a waste as it was a great building. I love the Kingdome and hate the new stadium.  Agree it was surreal to see the ship hit the support pillar and the whole building just collapse. Be interesting to see what replaces it as today bridges built like that are not allowed due to the exact nature of how it collapsed.  Yes, Tesla is a love or hate and the minimalist approach is not for everyone. I honestly have to agree with the comment @smk4565 I believe made that the touch screen only will be the future of cheap autos and switches and buttons will be the higher end autos. Interesting times we live in for sure.
    • Decent upgrade to the aging 2024 model. Nice to see they are reducing costs of the curved screen in the EVs by pushing it out across the Hyundai Family and into Kia. The one thing I do not like is all the Chrome. 🤢 🤮
    • Today at the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled an update to its little truck, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The refresh to the exterior is relatively mild, though it features a more menacing grille with bolder verticle lines.  Updated running lights and new wheel designs add to the fresher look. Inside, there is a new steering wheel, infotainment system, and instrument panel. on upper trims, an optional panoramic curved display houses dual 12.3-inch displays for driver and entertainment. The plenty-capable powertrains carry over with either a 191-horsepower direct injected 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a turbo-charged version of of the same engine with 281 horsepower.  The transmission for the entry-level engine is a traditional 8-speed automatic, while the turbo-charged model gets an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Santa Cruzes with the turbo engine gain a new tow mode for enhanced towing control.  Both powertrains are towing capable with a 3,500 lb rating for the entry engine and a stout 5,000 lb rating for the turbo models when equipped with all-wheel drive. New for 2025 is an XRT trim geared even more towards outdoor adventure. It features a trim-specific front fascia and grille, special 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, an increased approach angle, front tow hooks, and surround-view monitoring.    The 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz goes on sale this summer. • Regarding Tesla - it's either love or hate with these vehicles.  A college friend I'll be seeing when in SoCal next month has 2 of them, and I'll probably be riding in both of them - one is his sleeker S model and I forgot which the other one (that his wife drives) is.  In certain places, people have a lot of disposable income and having a Tesla goes with the landscape. Minimalist(ic) isn't necessarily bad.  We all remember the adage "less is more."  I'll vouch that the workmanship of the interior is good and I can also vouch that the overall look (including the centered everything on one display) is ugly.  I will say that EV motors are supposed to last a long time but the battery replacement is very expensive and the range is currently not that optimal. I did not like the model Y I had for less than 1 day.  Also, its exterior is mostly ugly.  That's my opinion. This isn't a discussion I want to get into.  I would much prefer a more user-friendly EV ... and not just yet. - - - - - What I was randomly going to say: I'm not sure whether I'm in shock or still feeling surreal as to what happened in Baltimore.  At first, I thought a ship just hit something on a bridge.  Then I saw the footage and that's the surreal part ... the domino-like collapse of the entire structure and the size of the ship.  I remember having to figure out the forces of either tension or compression on each member of a truss-like structure when I was in school.   A group of us sat there for about 3 or 4 hours one night - with some Mountain Dew - to work that out. I don't believe I've been on that bridge since it's on the outer beltway, but it's numbered as part of the U.S. interstate system.  From looking at the map, it is the major bridge on the entrance to/exit from Baltimore Harbor.  I hope they find the 6 individuals who were working on it fixing potholes in the middle of the night who fell down with the bridge.  The ship giving a mayday is what allowed them to shut down both approaches to the bridge just in time.   The weird thing is that it happened on March 26.  IIRC, the deliberate (domino-like) implosion of the reinforced concrete Kingdome in Seattle happened on March 26, 2000 (no rain that day) and people were sitting on slopes overlooking downtown to see that happen.  But that's how it is with planned implosions.  I went there that morning and have photos of the Kingdome's last day somewhere. https://www.seahawks.com/video/kingdome-implosion-hd It was indeed March 26, 2000.  I was one of the few who liked the Kingdome.
