    The Reasons Buick Passed On the Avista

      There is more to the decision of the Avista not going into production

    As we reported last month, Buick decided not to send the Avista into production. While the reason given at the time was due to not "enough enthusiasm for the concept," we had a sneaking suspicion there was more to that decision.

     

    Sure enough, Automotive News chatted with Buick global brand chief Duncan Aldred who explained the Avista wasn't "a massive opportunity in China." There is also the matter of priorities of which projects should go ahead or not.

     

    "Emotionally, you'd love to build it. I would buy one with my own money and put it in the garage," said Aldred.

     

    "The trouble is, I'm never looking at only one project. I'm always looking at several. I've got to weigh the pros and cons of each. There are some strong contenders in that consideration."

     

    Aldred also confirmed the rumor that the idea of Buick designers planning a four-door version of the Avista. This was first reported by Motor Trend in February

     

    "We looked at that. We've even visualized it. It would look wonderful as a four-door as well," said Aldred.

    Sell in quantities that could make serious profits? Nope

     

    The days of 2 door coupes are coming to a close as people want 4 doors and the ability to haul family and friends.

     

    Once Buick makes massive profits and is even more stable then they can consider doing low volume break even auto's like what this would probably be.

     

    LOVE the look in that garnet red metallic. :D

    It is sad but true that companies can not easily sell coupes. You can call GM what ever you like but they are in business to make money and coupes outside the Camaro are a hard sell. 

    When Duncan is presented with a case where he could sell 50,000  2 door Avista models or he could sell 150,000 Coupe styled 4 door versions globally it is a no brainier for someone with his ass on the line. 

    You can call it gutless but it will be profitable and do much better than a coupe. Just look at how many CTS coupes sold and how many had to be discounted that were not V trim. You call it gutless but most people in the real world call it logical.

    Agreed with all, and you pretty much knew they wouldn't build it when they showed it.  They make these coupes and convertibles to build excitement for the brand, but then when you never make on, it is a bit of a buzzkill.  I think Cadillac needs a concept looking car more than Buick though.

     

    Avista won't see production because it isn't a crossover.  That was pretty clear from the start.

    I didn't particularly like the Avista.

     

    However, I am very satisfied with the Buick Lacrosse.

     

    Judging by how the Cascada will not be updated for quite a while, I think the Buick Avista concept was a decent design study.

     

    But they never made a promise or made it a point that it's the next meta. So they're off the hook.

    it wasn't a priority for China

    Buick is being held together by China 

    If Buick made some nice LONG and WIDE coupes and sedans with V8 and rear wheel drive people would line up in droves and who cares about what China likes or doesn't like

    CAFE regulations? throw in some hybrid options and plug in hybrid options to sooth the balance

    in the mix, add a normally aspirated small block V8 such as a 6.0L or a 6.2L!

    Well it was not all that long ago people understood the show cars were just that show cars. Few complained that 98% of what was shown at Motorama was never made. Sure bits and parts of many cars did make production in other forms but people played with more reality that these cars were not producible as shown. Today most people are not that smart.

    Second coupes are a hard sell globally anymore.

    Third China loves large and sporty sedans more than even SUV/CUV models so if it were to be built a 4 door version would fit the their market well. It would also lend a good hand for lower volume models here and down under too.

    May want to forget the big V8 engines as we will see more turbo engine along with Hybrid. China needs a smaller engine for taxes as do many other markets anymore.

    The reason this car would have not made production is very clear from the start because it was a coupe. It had no B pillar, it had no ground clearance. The brakes are larger than most tire and wheel packages, the interior was printed, Finally it was made clear it was a show car done buy the design staff not the engineering department. It had little else to do with anything else.

    As noted they are looking officially at a sedan version and that would fit globally and all the brands that are sharing. It also would be a high end car so making money would not be an issue at lower volumes.

    Is the sedan a lock no but it has a better chance.

    God Harley Earl would throw things at some of you because you just don't get what a show car really is. Some of you would complain that the X and Y Jobs of his were never put into production back in the old days.

    This should surprise no one. The Avista, as sexy as it is should in no way be a production vehicle until Buick and GMC shore up the rest of their line-ups in away that they go directly against their intended competition. Because they are in teh same sales channel.. their budgets are intertwined. The GMC brands needs to get behind the new Acadia and make sure that it is ready to go up against the GC.. while they are at it.. they need a Wrangler competitor.. Buick needs a hatch to compliment the Verano as the Cruze has with its hatch.

    I think this would sell as a weekend cruiser if they made it with a more powerful VOLT or pure EV powertrain.

    they could do this if they canceled the ATS coupe.  The ATS coupe is the 'second ever G6' in terms of looks.....ATS coupe won't sell....but then again neither would this, but the Avista is better looking than the ATS coupe.

     

    both tread on the Camaros property.

     

    Not hardly any market for coupes.  Can't make this a sedan either.....we already have a new Regal and Verano coming.

    Hell....I just saw Smokey and the Bandit for the umpteenth and even a horsepower choking crappy 1970s catalytic converter V8 sounds better than all of those engines mentioned, including the modern Chevy LS engine. (but the LS engine DOES sound goooooood) In some scenes, where the Trans Am is idling, you could hear her V8 engine gurgle....what a sound....and no...that is not Industrial Light and Sound Star Wars sound effects, it really was the Trans Am's 400 cubic inch V8 making those wonderful sounds!

    Oh wait....

    I was  supposed to defend electric motors and agree with Mr DFELT  that a more powerful Bolt powertrain in the Avista coupe or sedan would be the bomb....

     

    OH well....V8s RULE!!!!

     

    Id go as far and say screw the Chevy LS motor in the Avista.

    Bring back that Pontiac 400 motor, add direct injection to it somehow and shoehorn it in the Avista.

    Shyte, shoehorn that in a Camaro, add an Endura nose to it and call it a Trans Am!

     

    THAT is the ONLY way Ill like the Camaro!

    Drills, absolutely have a great sound to them...

    Especially if you are the handyman type.

     

    Very masculine.

     

    Car garage smell with oil and gasoline mixed in  with rubber tire smell and pneumatic tools with V8 engine sounds in the background are akin to hardware store smell with lumber smells mixed in with paint smells and glues with electric tool sounds such as electric saws and drills....

     

    But that is just me, I guess....

    A relic of the past that enjoys being a smelly, hairy, sweaty macho male...

    No, I aint metro sexual...nor am I a slob..

    But...Im well groomed, very well groomed when the occasion calls for it but I still cling on to the old neanderthal stereotypes that require males to be males...

    No offense taken guys, I consider myself a manly man and love my V8 Powered AWD Trailblazer SS.

     

    With that said and those that know me know I have all SUVs with V8's. Just the future is cool and I do see us eventually going to EVs. They are cool and in time with tuning and engineers pushing the limits we will see EVs surpass the petrol motor I believe.

     

    Here is my baby all cleaned up for Spring!

    It could be a larger premium rwd awd sedan with coupe like styling., 

     

    Lets face it at a higher price and RWD it would appeal to a different segment and could be sold in lower volumes. This is no different than the Impala going to an Alpha and the Malibu covering the volume in the mid size FWD.  The Lacrosse is the major problem but even there two different segments. Lose the FWD impala and keep the Lacrosse and it would gain sales there. 

     

    Also make the Alvita sedan a Opel, Vauxhaull and Holden using the same platform as the Impala and TT V6.

    Sorry to burst your bubble but generally in many scenes the sound were dubbed and in many others the engine in the car was not as you would call a Catalytic choked 70's engine. 

    You may want to note too that the close up car had a auto but in many shots you can see them shifting gears with a standard. 

     

    I am a disciple of the movie and know well many of the things they did. Hal spoke at many Pontiac meets telling things about the cars from the movie. 

    Might note the last shot of the car coming down the hill at the race to deliver the beer. That was the last car they had left and the engine was blown. They coasted down the hill to get into the shot. 

    I even keep a copy of the movie on my Phone you sumbitch! 

     

    Sorry I had to use that some where. At least I did not use Moose Prick. LOL! 

     

    At one point they installed an engine from  NASCAR. Hal had some friends there and ended up owning a team there after this movie. I think the car that made the bridge jump has a NASCAR Chevy engine in it at the time.

    I for one am disappointed with the news that the Buick Avista is not being seriously considered for production. It is s beautiful design and really drew a lot of attention to the Buick display at the NYIAS. Additionally, it breathes new life into Buick. It shows that Buick isn't your father's (or grandfather's) car anymore. The new 2017 LaCrosse and Encore are great looking Buicks, the Envision has potential, and we're waiting to see the next generation Verano, Enclave, and Regal. I think a halo coupe like the Avista would add a vehicle in that white space we hear so much about. The Cascada is a nice car, but not everyone will want a convertible and I'd rather have an Avista Coupe instead.

    I think a good looking, Avista styled Regal can do a lot.

     

    I'd buy that. In fact...I would make that a top priority.

     

    Make a FWD-based car look RWD. Mazda, and Volvo are really good at it with their recent cars.

    Pontiac's have always sounded great but a stock 77 just was not that good with out a little help.  

     

    I have been around Pontiac enough I can pick out a Ram AIr IV cam by the sound. We used a lot of them over the years and used to pop them in 428 engines. I love the sound of the Tripowe when you open it up. That stiff spot when you open the secondary carbs with mechanical linkage is a powerful feel. 

     

    I am going to go down to Georgia in the near future for work. It will be in the area where they filmed much of the movie and I have a co worker going to take me to many of the places they filmed that are still left. The place where the Snowman got in a fight is a restaurant yet and we are going to have lunch here. 

    I hate to say it but the place the Sheriff ordered the Diablo sandwich and the Dr Pepper. is gone. That is what devastated me. I so wanted to go in like so many others and order that and tell them I was in a GD hurry. 

     

    It is a shame none of the cars survived. Only the promo car for Universal that was recently sold and the 78 TA Burt owned are the only two associated left. The others were reproduction and used up. Odds were they would have scrapped them anyways. No one expected the movie to do so well. 

    There really was so little script and they pretty much made up the dialog in most of the shots. Gleason did his own thing and came up with the lines as he went. He also was half in the bag most of the movie. He would ask for a hamburger and they would give him a Martini. They asked him why he called them Hamburgers. He said he did not want anyone to know he was drinking. LOL!. 

    The Cadillac at the end is still around. Also the semi has been found and reported it may be getting restored. There is a clone out now as is the Sheriffs car and even Carries car from the start of the movie. 

     

    It is a shame the second movie sucked. Also that car had work as the 301 Turbo really did not have it to do what it needed to do.

    I think the Avista captures the Wildcat's spirit.

     

    I think the Regal should stay the way it is...

    I think the name Park Avenue should retire from Buick's nomenclature.

    Why?

     

    1. Old Skool name. I love it, but all the pre- and post-bankrupt North American Buick wildly successful nameplates have NEW names.

    Encore, Enclave, Verano.

    The Lacrosse nameplate is somewhat a success, and a NEW name.

    The only one that struggles to sell is the Regal....yup....old name.

     

    So...I think a good Park Avenue replacement name would be Avenir...

    Going back to the Wildcat...on second thought, maybe Avista should remain as a name should Buick/GM somehow all of a sudden green light the Avista.

     

    2. Cadillac is in New York City now...Cadillac is the one to have a New York Groove. Other GM brands should refrain from any New York delusions of grandeur.

    Yes it would have to be a larger car as the Regal is just not in the price class to deal with doing this right.

    This would be a top end halo sedan over the Lacrosse targeting a lower volume niche of people wanting sporty with jusdt some compromise for style in a sedan. Like a 5 class Benz. 

    This car would replace nothing as it would just be supplemental. 

    Also forget the old names. Is this really a car fitting the Park Ave name? Even Riv would not fit because of the extra doors. 

     

    You want to continue the changes at Buick you do it in styling, product offerings and names. The old names only garner old customers that are loyal. The new names bring a different view to the new customers you are trying to reach. You can sell an old customer a new name but seldom do old names mean much or make new customers respond. Especially since so many of them were damaged on poor cars in the last 30 years. 

    Lets face it the last Riviera was not the 1963-65 model. 

     

    The only old name with a shot is Wildcat as most people that are the new target customers were not even born when the last one was made and it never went thought the Down Sized FWD drama. 

     

    I would not be disturbed if the Regal name went away either. It reminds me too much of the soul less W bodies of the 90's. Skylark is the embarrassment of the 80's N body and I could go on. 

     

    Lesabre was not a bad car but younger buyers equate it to dad or grand dad car as we all know some one that was 60 plus years old that had one or two of them. My dad did so did Grandma. 

     

    Park Ave is a large luxury sedan not a sporty sedan. That is what the Lacrosse should be. Make it a Hybrid and call it Electra 240 for the charging system.

The new names bring a different view to the new customers you are trying to reach. You can sell an old customer a new name but seldom do old names mean much or make new customers respond. Especially since so many of them were damaged on poor cars in the last 30 years. 

    Lets face it the last Riviera was not the 1963-65 model. 

     

    The only old name with a shot is Wildcat as most people that are the new target customers were not even born when the last one was made and it never went thought the Down Sized FWD drama. 

     

    I would not be disturbed if the Regal name went away either. It reminds me too much of the soul less W bodies of the 90's. Skylark is the embarrassment of the 80's N body and I could go on. 

     

    Lesabre was not a bad car but younger buyers equate it to dad or grand dad car as we all know some one that was 60 plus years old that had one or two of them. My dad did so did Grandma. 

     

    Park Ave is a large luxury sedan not a sporty sedan. That is what the Lacrosse should be. Make it a Hybrid and call it Electra 240 for the charging system. 

     

    I agree that you take this car and do one of two things, either a pure EV and call it Electra or TTV6 and call it Wildcat! 

     

    Both pay homage to Buicks rich history! :D

    The Enclave is the top-shelf Buick.

     

    Maybe that will get a an upgrade engine option.

     

    Honestly a 7 passenger a well-done next-gen Buick Enclave can go against anything that is 7 passengers and is premium.

    they could do this if they canceled the ATS coupe.  The ATS coupe is the 'second ever G6' in terms of looks.....ATS coupe won't sell....but then again neither would this, but the Avista is better looking than the ATS coupe.

    This car in both 2dr and 4dr forms should have been the Regal replacement! In RWD and AWD forms it would be the only RWD based somewhat affordable sedan in the domestic market! Using the Camaro version of the Alpha platform it like the old Firebird/Trans Am was for Pontiac could have been the Buick version of the Camaro helping spread out the cost in 2dr form while having the 4dr RWD based sedan that nobody else offers in this would be price range!

    I think you miss the problems of the past. The Camaro and Firebird proved to be very counter productive by selling nearly identical cars with the added cost of design, marketing and a lesser degree engineering.  Not good for profits. 

    If you want to use this you have to slot this car in some where it will not counter the Camaro and not the ATS. 

    The only area GM can get away with some overlap is the trucks and SUV models and they are even working to slot them more apart to. 

     

    The Camaro has to sell around 100K units to remain viable. You cut into that at added cost of a second model it could be much less profitable. 

     

    I loved the TA but I agree GM is better off with out it as it used to be its own car for the most but from the 3rd gen on it was nothing but a fancy Chevy.

    Buick is being held together by China 

    If Buick made some nice LONG and WIDE coupes and sedans with V8 and rear wheel drive people would line up in droves and who cares about what China likes or doesn't like

    CAFE regulations? throw in some hybrid options and plug in hybrid options to sooth the balance

    in the mix, add a normally aspirated small block V8 such as a 6.0L or a 6.2L!

The refresh to the exterior is relatively mild, though it features a more menacing grille with bolder verticle lines.  Updated running lights and new wheel designs add to the fresher look. Inside, there is a new steering wheel, infotainment system, and instrument panel. on upper trims, an optional panoramic curved display houses dual 12.3-inch displays for driver and entertainment. The plenty-capable powertrains carry over with either a 191-horsepower direct injected 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a turbo-charged version of of the same engine with 281 horsepower.  The transmission for the entry-level engine is a traditional 8-speed automatic, while the turbo-charged model gets an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Santa Cruzes with the turbo engine gain a new tow mode for enhanced towing control.  Both powertrains are towing capable with a 3,500 lb rating for the entry engine and a stout 5,000 lb rating for the turbo models when equipped with all-wheel drive. New for 2025 is an XRT trim geared even more towards outdoor adventure.     • Regarding Tesla - it's either love or hate with these vehicles.  A college friend I'll be seeing when in SoCal next month has 2 of them, and I'll probably be riding in both of them - one is his sleeker S model and I forgot which the other one (that his wife drives) is.  In certain places, people have a lot of disposable income and having a Tesla goes with the landscape. Minimalist(ic) isn't necessarily bad.  We all remember the adage "less is more."  I'll vouch that the workmanship of the interior is good and I can also vouch that the overall look (including the centered everything on one display) is ugly.  I will say that EV motors are supposed to last a long time but the battery replacement is very expensive and the range is currently not that optimal. I did not like the model Y I had for less than 1 day.  Also, its exterior is mostly ugly.  That's my opinion. This isn't a discussion I want to get into.  I would much prefer a more user-friendly EV ... and not just yet. - - - - - What I was randomly going to say: I'm not sure whether I'm in shock or still feeling surreal as to what happened in Baltimore.  At first, I thought a ship just hit something on a bridge.  Then I saw the footage and that's the surreal part ... the domino-like collapse of the entire structure and the size of the ship.  I remember having to figure out the forces of either tension or compression on each member of a truss-like structure when I was in school.   A group of us sat there for about 3 or 4 hours one night - with some Mountain Dew - to work that out. I don't believe I've been on that bridge since it's on the outer beltway, but it's numbered as part of the U.S. interstate system.  From looking at the map, it is the major bridge on the entrance to/exit from Baltimore Harbor.  I hope they find the 6 individuals who were working on it fixing potholes in the middle of the night who fell down with the bridge.  The ship giving a mayday is what allowed them to shut down both approaches to the bridge just in time.   The weird thing is that it happened on March 26.  IIRC, the deliberate (domino-like) implosion of the reinforced concrete Kingdome in Seattle happened on March 26, 2000 (no rain that day) and people were sitting on slopes overlooking downtown to see that happen.  But that's how it is with planned implosions.  I went there that morning and have photos of the Kingdome's last day somewhere. https://www.seahawks.com/video/kingdome-implosion-hd It was indeed March 26, 2000.  I was one of the few who liked the Kingdome.
