Bob Ferguson, Cadillac's global vice president revealed some interesting information about what's coming down the pipeline for the wreath and crest.

For starters, Ferguson revealed that the next Cadillac CTS would be unveiled at March's New York Auto Show, confirming what we've been hearing for the past month or so. Furguson also said the CTS would be going on sale sometime in the fall.

"It's just gorgeous. We are positioning that car as a step up, so there will be a marketing challenge to reposition that car," Ferguson told the Detroit Free Press just outside of the National Automobile Dealers Association Convention in Orlando.

Ferguson also said GM would soon be introducing a coupe version of the ATS. Ferguson didn't say when, but did say it would go on sale sometime in 2014.

Stop me if you heard this before. An automaker introduces a new and shiny infotainment system that uses a large screen, capacitive touchscreen and buttons, fancy graphics, and number of other features. Reviewers and people who buy said vehicles with the new infotainment system complain the system is too slow and laggy, thus prompting the automaker to issue an update. Ford is one of those automakers that has and is still going through this process and will soon be joined by Cadillac with their CUE system.

According to Wired Autopia, Cadillac will launch an update to CUE that will improve the haptic feedback of both the touchscreen controls and the capacitive buttons on the center stack.

“We’re hearing about our haptics and the desire for quicker responses. And we’re making a modification that will be released sometime later this year,” said CUE’s design manager Jeff Massimilla.

The update will be done at Cadillac dealers, even though models equipped with CUE do have an embedded data connection.

“The Cadillac customer expects the dealership to do the work,” said Massimilla.

January 17, 2013

The 2014 Cadillac ELR is the first model of a new global product offensive by the brand that could see the lineup expand up to ten models by 2016. According the Reuters, Cadillac hopes to grow global sales. The models potentially include a flagship sedan, a small crossover, and a small car.

Currently, almost 75% of Cadillac sales come from the U.S. In 2012, Cadillac dropped from forth to fifth place due to sales sliding.

"We're saying it over and over and over that we want Cadillac to be a truly global luxury brand. We have the core of a very good product set now and we're working hard at examining the options to make it even better. You can expect a more robust lineup," said Bob Ferguson, vice president of global Cadillac.

Sources tell Reuters that after the ELR, Cadillac is working on a flagship sedan named the LTS to compete with the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The LTS will use the new Omega RWD architecture. Also in the cards is the expansion of Cadillac's crossover lineup by adding a smaller model to compete with the BMW X1 and a larger seven-seat model. There is also a ATS coupe and a smaller Alpha sub-compact car.

Analysts have doubts about this plan, citing that certain markets like Europe could take up fifteen years to gain a size-able share.

"I'm not convinced Cadillac can pull it off," said Jim Hall, managing director of consulting firm 2953 Analytics. "They may still be suffering from 'Lincoln disease' - the lack of long-term commitment by the parent company."

GM will also focus on building Cadillac's presence in China, where it will start building the full-size XTS sedan in about two weeks.

Analysts do agree that with the expansion of the lineup, it will help strengthen the brand.

"Even if Cadillac's not commanding the same price as the Germans or selling as many cars, people for the first time in decades are saying these are good cars," said John Casesa, senior managing director with Guggenheim Securities.

January 15, 2013

In 2009, Cadillac unveiled the Converj concept which melded the Volt's Voltec powertrain in a drop-dead gorgeous body. Today at the Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac revealed the production model of the Converj, which is named the ELR.

The ELR stays very much true to the Converj's styling. The result is a very handsome and daring vehicle to wear the crest and wreath. The design features a low, fast roofline; strong shoulder line running from the doors towards the end of the vehicle, twenty-inch wheels, and LED head and taillights.

The ELR's interior is very luxurious. Designers lined the interior with stitched leather, suede microfiber, wood, and carbon fiber. There is also a load new tech including Cadillac's CUE infotainment system, digital instrument panel that is configurable, 10-speaker Bose system with noise cancellation, and a industry first; "power-assisted" sliding cupholder cover. (Not a joke).

Under the ELR's skin is the same Voltec powertrain that is in the Chevrolet Volt. That means a 1.4L inline-four that acts as the generator, two electric motors, and the T-shaped, 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Total output is 207 horsepower and and 295 pound-feet of peak torque thanks to a reprogrammed electric-drive controller. 0-60 MPH takes about eight seconds. The ELR will be able to travel up 35 Miles on electric power alone, a decrease from 38 Miles on the Volt. Total range also decreases from 380 Miles on the Volt to 300 Miles on the ELR.

Cadillac says the ELR will be a pleasure to drive thanks to stiffer body structure, electronically controlled, variable-rate dampers; and an available sport program that changes throttle response, steering effort and damper settings. The ELR also features a "Regen on Demand" feature that temporarily increases the regenerative braking level by the driver using the steering-wheel paddles.

The Cadillac ELR begins production in late 2013, with sales beginning in 2014.

Cadillac ELR Electrifies the Luxury Market

Luxury coupe blends dramatic design, industry-leading extended range technology

DETROIT – Cadillac unveils the 2014 ELR today at the North American International Auto Show. The sleek luxury coupe features the first application of Extended Range Electric Vehicle technology by a full-line luxury automotive brand.

"ELR is an unprecedented combination of luxury, advanced engineering and progressive design in a coupe that is both sporty and environmentally friendly," said Bob Ferguson, Cadillac global vice president. "This is a pivotal moment in Cadillac's history, as we continue our product-driven expansion."

The ELR delivers on the promise of the Converj Concept on which it is based. The exterior establishes a new, progressive proportion for the brand while the interior introduces a new design theme that will define future Cadillac models, emphasizing modern elegance, technology and precisely crafted details.

Industry-leading Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology provides full driving range exceeding 300 miles (480 km), combining pure electric driving and an efficient, range-extending generator.

"ELR marks a fresh, even surprising new dimension of Cadillac," Ferguson said. "An additional aspect of ELR's appeal to will be exclusivity. It will be a specialized offering produced in limited numbers."

ELR's confident and responsive EREV driving technology is enhanced with exclusive Regen on Demand and selectable drive modes that enhance driving and make the most of efficiency. Regen on Demand allows the driver to temporarily regenerate energy from the ELR's momentum into electricity that can be stored in the battery pack for later use. It is engaged via steering-wheel paddles adapted from traditional performance cars.

The industry-leading, proven EREV technology is uniquely tuned for Cadillac in the ELR. Most daily commutes will require zero gasoline with zero emissions. Longer trips are free from electric-vehicle range anxiety because EREV technology enables the same long-distance freedom as a conventional car.

Additional vehicle highlights include:

• Enhanced AT-PZEV emissions meet California's criteria for single-occupancy access to high occupancy vehicle lanes

• Light-emitting diode (LED) headlamps, daytime running lamps and taillamps, as well as signature front and rear lighting elements

• Twenty-inch wheels paired with tires designed to balance responsive handling and a comfortable ride with efficiency

• Interior design featuring cut-and-sew accented leather incorporating sueded microfiber, chrome, wood and available carbon fiber finishes throughout

• Cadillac CUE with Navigation is standard. CUE is Cadillac's breakthrough system for connectivity and control, using Natural Voice Recognition, capacitive touch and hand gestures used on smart phones and tablets

• Programmable charging schedules and downloadable energy efficiency reports available online and through smartphone notification charging alerts

• Cadillac's advanced active safety features, including Safety Alert Seat, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, along with available Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and full-speed-range adaptive cruise control

• Advanced chassis and suspension systems, including HiPer Strut front suspension, compound-crank with Watts link rear suspension and Continuous Damping Control, which adjusts damping every two milliseconds for optimal ride and handling in all conditions

• Standard premium Bose 10-channel audio system with active noise cancellation.

ELR production begins in the United States in late 2013 with sales starting in early 2014 in North America and expanding to global markets including China and Europe.

Design

The Cadillac ELR has an aggressive, forward-leaning profile that introduces a new, progressive theme and proportion in Cadillac's design evolution. It carries over almost unchanged from the 2009 Converj concept that inspired it. The overall shape is reinforced by a prominent, sweeping body line accented by 20-inch wheels pushed to the edges of the body.

"The ELR represents a new dimension of Art & Science, the guiding philosophy of Cadillac," said Mark Adams, Cadillac design director. "Cadillac's DNA is innovation, with dramatic and provocative design. ELR delivers this in a luxury coupe that stands alone among major luxury brands globally."

Vertical headlamp and taillamp elements create Cadillac's signature for the ELR, day or night and from the front or rear – a brand tradition since 1948.

Aerodynamics play a crucial role in the design as airflow is managed to help the vehicle slip through the air with minimal drag. A flush front fascia and grille – with active shutters behind the grille opening – as well as tapered fascia corners, enable air to move easily around the car to reduce drag. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler also manage airflow. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag and contribute to ELR's 0.305 coefficient of drag.

Inside, the ELR's classic 2+2 layout is driver focused, emphasizing modern luxury, connectivity and precisely crafted details. The leather-trimmed interior blends authentic chrome and wood accents – and available carbon fiber trim – as well as a sueded microfiber headliner and steering wheel covered in leather and sueded microfiber. Additional features include:

• Eight-inch configurable instrument and driver information displays, offering four configurations ranging from elegantly simple to technologically enhanced information

• Auto-glide/power-assisted covered storage/cup holder in the center console

• Fold-down rear seat backs accommodate longer items, including multiple sets of golf clubs

• LED-powered accent lighting in the instrument panel and doors

• Available Opus semi-aniline leather seating.

Cadillac CUE with Navigation is standard and accessible through a large, eight-inch, full-color capacitive-touch screen in the center of the instrument panel. It supports the electrified driving experience with displays on driving efficiency, energy usage, charging options and more, in addition to a broad range of infotainment options.

Using Cadillac CUE via the touch screen features gesture recognition, proximity sensing (revealing information when needed) and a three-core microprocessor for faster response. Some features are accessible via steering-wheel controls and the motorized screen pivots up to reveal a hidden storage compartment with a USB port for phones and other personal items.

Driving Experience

The Cadillac ELR's dramatic design is matched with an engaging driving experience, supported by the EREV propulsion system calibrated for uncompromising performance. With 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm) – about 12 percent more than the 3.6L V-6 in the SRX – acceleration in the city and on the highway, including merging and passing, is achieved with reassuring power on demand.

Driving confidence is further enhanced by advanced suspension and damping systems, including Continuous Damping Control – which adjusts damping every two milliseconds – to maintain optimal vehicle ride control over varying road surfaces and profiles. The ELR rolls on 20-inch wheels with specially engineered low-rolling-resistance tires designed to balance excellent control and cornering capability with efficiency.

A solid, stable foundation underpins the ELR, featuring a body-frame-integral structure with main underbody rails running continuously from front to rear. Advanced, high-strength steels add strength and conserve weight. Additional contributors to the ELR's driving experience include:

• Wide front and rear tracks – 62.1 inches (1,578 mm) in front and 62.4 inches (1,585 mm) in the rear – along with a long wheelbase (106.1 inches / 2,695 mm) and a low center of gravity

• HiPer Strut front suspension featuring lightweight forged aluminum components for reduced weight and more nimble, responsive action

• Dual-pinion, rack-mounted electric power steering system with premium ZF steering gear designed to provide excellent feedback while helping to save fuel

• A semi-independent rear compound-crank suspension with Watts link that incorporates weight-optimized trailing arms to absorb lateral forces, allowing the suspension to be tuned to handle vertical, forward and rearward motions

• Hydraulic ride bushings in the front and rear suspensions

• An electro-hydraulic regenerative brake system that captures energy and sends it to the battery pack

• Standard chassis control systems include antilock brakes, traction control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control.

Because the ELR operates so quietly in all-electric mode, a driver-activated feature sounds a noise to alert pedestrians, particularly those with visual impairments, in an intersection. The alert was developed in conjunction with the American Federation of the Blind.

Propulsion and Charging Technology

The ELR is powered by GM EREV technology, combining pure electric drive and an efficient, range-extending 1.4L gasoline-powered electric generator capable of 154 kW (207 hp) of total system power.

The ELR's battery is a T-shaped, 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, located along the centerline of the vehicle, between the front and rear wheels for optimal weight distribution. The 5.5-foot-long (1.6 m), 435-pound (198 kg) pack supplies energy to an advanced electric drive unit capable of 295 lb.-ft. of instant torque (400 Nm) to propel the vehicle. Using only the energy stored in the battery, the ELR will deliver a GM-estimated range of about 35 miles (56 km) of pure electric driving, depending on terrain, driving techniques and temperature.

A driver-selectable Hold mode directs when the ELR uses its electric generator. This feature helps optimize the electric-driving experience, allowing owners who mix city and highway driving to save the battery charge for city travel, where the ELR EV mode operates most efficiently.

Charging the ELR's battery can be done with a 120V electrical outlet or a dedicated 240V charging station. The vehicle can be completely recharged in about 4.5 hours using a 240V outlet, depending on the outside temperature.

Once the vehicle is plugged in, owners can schedule either immediate or delayed charges, even coordinating charging according to departure time or when electricity rates are lower. Owners also can manage and monitor the ELR online or with their smartphone and RemoteLink, a mobile app powered by OnStar.

The ELR's battery is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Manufacturing

The Cadillac ELR will be manufactured at General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, the world's only automotive manufacturing facility that mass-produces extended-range electric vehicles for global markets in 21 countries. It is also home to Southeast Michigan's largest photovoltaic solar array. The 264,000-square-foot feature generates up to 516 kilowatts of electricity – enough to charge 150 ELRs per day.

It is looking like GM is gearing up for a very busy auto show in Detroit this year. Today Cadillac released this teaser of their upcoming ELR luxury electric hybrid. Based on Voltec technology, the Cadillac ELR will begin production in late 2013 at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant where the Volt is currently built.

Rumor has it that the ELR will forgo the 1.4 liter engine the Volt uses and instead run with a new Opel engine displacing around 1.8 liters. Further backing that up will likely be a larger battery.

The Cadillac ATS was designed to compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and of course the BMW 3-Series.

Surprisingly, the new ATS appears to be cutting into the sales of another Cadillac, the CTS. Since the ATS was launched back in September, CTS sales have taken a nose dive. In October, CTS sales dropped 40% when compared to the same time last year. Edmunds.com data backs up this up with the ATS being cross-shopped with the CTS. Thankfully, the data from Edmunds also shows the ATS being cross-shopped with the 3-Series.

Is GM panicking with news like this? Well no. Chase Hawkins, Cadillac's U.S. sales chief tells Automotive News that they are not surprised with the ATS cannibalizing sales of the CTS. Hawkins says GM has a plan to deal with this; build less CTSes.

"We've planned for ATS to take some CTS customers out of the market who we otherwise would have seen. We definitely are going to be producing fewer CTSs next year to create some of that space for ATS," said Hawkins.

The next CTS, due out in late 2013 will move up in price and space, giving the two models a bit more breathing room.

If you have been reading any of the comparison tests of the new Cadillac ATS and the competition, you would have notice a reoccurring complaint; the six-speed manual transmission stinks. Apparently Cadillac is taking those criticisms to heart.

A source tells Motor Trend that Cadillac has stopped production of ATSs equipped with the six-speed manual to fix complaints of the six-speed being awful. The fix involves moving to a softer bushing setup in the transmission.

The fix will will be made before any cars equipped with the manual make it into the hands of consumers, meaning no recall.

Plant gets $35 million investment for extended-range electric vehicle

DETROIT – Preparations will soon be under way at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant to build the Cadillac ELR, a luxury coupe featuring extended-range electric technology, General Motors North America President Mark Reuss said Tuesday.

“The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology,” Reuss said in a keynote address at the SAE Convergence Conference in Detroit. “People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design.”

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2013.

The addition of the ELR to Detroit-Hamtramck represents a $35 million investment and increases total product investment to $561 million since December 2009. It is the first two-door car built at the plant since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.

"This investment reflects the corporation’s confidence that the highly skilled members of UAW Local 22 can successfully build one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world,” said UAW Vice President Joe Ashton, who directs the union's GM Department. “The hard work and dedication of our members demonstrates that we can competitively manufacture products for the future right here in Detroit.”

The ELR is the production version of Cadillac’s Converj, a concept vehicle revealed at the North American International Auto Show in 2009. The ELR will advance the design theme of the Converj while featuring an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. It will use electricity as its primary power source to drive the car without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the battery’s energy is low, the ELR seamlessly switches to a gasoline-powered electric generator to allow hundreds of additional driving miles. The lithium-ion battery will be built at GM’s Brownstown Battery Assembly plant in Brownstown, Mich.

Detroit-Hamtramck is the only U.S. automotive manufacturing plant that mass produces extended-range electric vehicles. The plant is home to the Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera, and Holden Volt extended-range electric vehicles. Extended-range electric vehicles are exported to 21 countries from the plant.

We been posting spy shots of the upcoming Cadillac ELR for the past couple of months. All of them being the exterior. We've been wondering what the interior will look like. Well the spy gods have heard our cries and photos of the ELR's interior have come out.

Not a surprise in the Interior shots is the appearance of Cadillac's CUE Infortainment system and the steering wheel from the XTS and ATS. What is a surprise is the instrument cluster. Much like the Volt, this ELR mule uses a screen to display pertinent information. The layout mimics the Lexus LF-A supercar with a analog gauge sitting in the middle with other information sitting on either side.

GM Names Ferguson Cadillac Global Brand Chief

Exclusive marketing focus to accelerate premium luxury brand's international growth

DETROIT — General Motors today appointed senior executive Robert E. Ferguson to lead the global growth and development of the company’s iconic Cadillac brand.

In the newly created position of vice president, global Cadillac, Ferguson will be responsible for marketing, brand management and advertising for Cadillac in markets around the world. The move is effective immediately and he will report directly to GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. Responsibility for sales is also expected to transition to Ferguson in the new year.

“Bob is a proven leader with vision and a will to win at this critical time for Cadillac,” said Akerson. “He brings a deep business and marketing background that has been marked by delivering results at every stop and under every circumstance. The Cadillac brand will hit a higher gear under his watch."

Ferguson heads Cadillac at a time when GM's premium luxury brand is planning the most extensive round of product launches and upgrades in its history, and is poised to enter new international markets with industry-leading products like the XTS, ATS and SRX.

"I’m excited to join a talented team during a period of revitalized growth,” said Ferguson. “The opportunity to strengthen and grow Cadillac is ours for the taking. More people in new markets will experience what makes Cadillac one of the industry's most revered brands."

U.S. vice president for Cadillac marketing Don Butler and U.S. vice president for Cadillac sales and service Chase Hawkins will report to Ferguson as he begins building out his global team.

Ferguson, 53, joined GM in 2010 and is currently vice president for global public policy. He is credited with helping GM strengthen its position and voice on Capitol Hill, and with its many regulatory agencies, on a wide range of business challenges related to energy, tax, labor and finance policy. In that role, Ferguson has become particularly familiar with GM’s product portfolio and advanced technology plans as the automaker contends with new fuel economy rules and safety regulations.

Prior to joining GM, Ferguson was at the business advisory and strategic communications firm Public Strategies, where he worked with a diverse and international group of clients as a senior strategist. His work with the firm included providing international relations and crisis counsel to the president of the International Olympic Committee during the period leading up to and during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, as well as leading strategy around several high-profile and complex financial and merger and acquisition transactions.

Before joining Public Strategies, Ferguson spent more than 10 years as an executive at AT&T, most recently as the president of state legislative and regulatory affairs. He also gained a depth of experience on the sales side of the business, as group president and CEO of SBC's Enterprise Business Services. In that role, he had responsibility for 10,000 employees — one of the nation’s largest sales and engineering organizations at the time. During his tenure, Ferguson oversaw data services, Internet, long distance and customer service operations and grew revenues of $5 billion and EBIT of $1.9 billion.

Ferguson's previous responsibilities in Washington will be assumed by Selim Bingol, who will also retain his current communications role and will become vice president, global communications and public policy. Bingol, who also will serve as chairman of the GM Foundation, will continue to report directly to Akerson and remain based in Detroit.

Bingol, 52, joined GM in March 2010, having served as a senior communications and public affairs strategist for a number of large, international clients across diverse industries. Prior to GM, Bingol was senior vice president, corporate communications at AT&T, during a time of unprecedented growth, merger and acquisition activity, and federal and state regulatory scrutiny.

When the first-generation Cadillac CTS debuted in 2002, it premiered the Art & Science design language with crisp lines and sharp edges. Ask GM design chief Ed Welburn what he thinks of it and this is what he would say,

"It had a dramatic presence, very angular. But when you really look at it, the surfacing of the body was not very sophisticated at all," Welburn said to Automotive News.

The second-generation CTS would add some sculpture that would smooth out the angular look while remaining as interesting as the first-gen model.

So what's in store for the next-generation CTS? Welburn says the car will lose more of its edgy-ness for more contours (see ATS for an example). Welburn goes onto say that the CTS "will continue to be very dramatic, but I think in some ways even more sophisticated."

Some new spy shots have come in today showing a camouflaged Cadillac ELR doing some hot-weather testing somewhere in the Southwest U.S.

Despite GM's best efforts to cover-up the ELR mule, you can easily tell the three-bar grille and corporate crest visible on all Cadillacs. The overall shape is similar to the Converj concept shown back in 2009.

The ELR is expected to come with the Voltec powertrain from Volt. Expect the ELR to have more power since it will weigh more than the Volt. A larger battery is also being talked.

Cadillac is readying a 2.0 turbo version of their full size XTS sedan model according to a diagram obtained by a CheersandGears.com reader. The diagram, sourced from a U.S. Cadillac dealership parts catalog, shows the 2.0T badging along with the FlexFuel badge we are familiar with from other GM vehicles.

When we first saw the diagram, we thought we were looking at evidence of a US bound livery model of the XTS similar to Lincoln’s MKT 2.0 Ecoboost. However, a source inside of GM informed us this was not the case, so do not expect to see the 2.0T version on the road if you live in the U.S.

This version of XTS will be for sale only in China and likely be an eventual replacement for the Chinese only Cadillac SLS 2.0T.

Being a cousin of the now departed Saab 9-5, we can expect the XTS 2.0T to have no less than 220 horsepower and 258 ft-lb of torque at 2000 rpm. The possibility exists for more performance as GM has been actively improving their 2.0T, so any engine spec between those above and the 270 horsepower 295 ft-lb of torque available in the Buick Regal GS is possible. All-Wheel-Drive is not expected to be offered.

In other XTS news, we have confirmed that there are no plans to sell the XTS in Europe contrary to what had been previously reported by other outlets, making the XTS limited to the North American and Asian markets.

Cadillac has sent mules of the next-generation Cadillac CTS off to Europe for testing and some new spy photos show them in action.

Apparently in Europe, its ok to have less camouflage on your test car and that gives us some big hints as to what designers have in mind for the CTS. The large front grille bears a striking resemblance to the Ciel concept. The front headlights, currently prototype assemblies at this time, appear to have a set of LED running lights.

The side profile of this mule reveals the rear window is more raked than the current model, almost mimicking the CTS coupe. Most likely, this is to improve aerodynamics and help boost fuel economy.

Speaking of which, the CTS powertrain lineup is still under a lot of speculation. Currently, the base engine will be the 2.0T from the ATS, followed by the 3.6L DI V6, and a twin-turbo V6 will be the top engine. Those wondering where an eight-cylinder CTS is need to wait for the V model.

General Motors has been quiet on the new Cadillac ELR since announcing it would go into production for the 2014 model year. However, Car & Driver has uncovered some information that shines some light of what we could expect of Cadillac’s new extended-range EV.

It’s been bandied about that ELR would share the same Voltec powertrain used in the Chevrolet Volt, but rumor has it that the ELR will swap the current 1.4L engine and use a naturally aspirated variant of Opel’s newly-developed Ecotec MGE engine. The Ecotec MGE engine is the base for a future family of low-emissions, direct-injection four-cylinder engines that will eventually replace most of GM’s Family 1 engines. For those wondering what a GM Family 1 engine is, the 1.8L four used in the Sonic and Cruze is one of them.

The Ecotec MGE engine block has been engineered to have a max displacement of 2.0L, though Car & Driver says expect the engine in the ELR to a 1.8L or less.

Another problem facing the ELR is weight. Compared to the Volt, the ELR is expected come with a wealth of luxury appointments and refinement, which means added weight and less range on electric power.

For 2013, the Volt gets a larger 16.5 kWh battery pack, which increased its electric range to 38 Miles. That gives us a hint the ELR might be getting a larger battery pack to overcome the added weight.

When the Cadillac XTS was first revealed, most everyone in the press said this was the new flagship. However, GM's North American president is making it clear that there could be a real Cadillac flagship.

Mark Reuss, GM's president for North America recently told Automotive News that a flagship Cadillac is on the table.

The flagship would be a continuation of how GM has been positioning Cadillac's lineup to better match-up with competitors. The new ATS will tackle the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, while the next CTS will grow in size to better compete with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

“I’m a fan of going right at those segments and beating them in segment,” Reuss said. He went onto say that he would ”love Cadillac to have a flagship.”

But Reuss does cautions on if the flagship makes the light of day, saying if GM executives conclude that it is the best use of the automaker's finite resources.

"The way we're funding Cadillac has been from, sort of, everything else in GM. That leaves the brand with "very reduced scale in terms of individual architectures, engines, technology."

"We have to make very careful decisions," he said.

The next Cadillac CTS is just around the corner and Inside Line has gotten their hands on new spy shots that reveal some key parts that will appear when the it arrives in the 2014 model year.

Starting with the exterior, the front end appears to have some Ciel infulence with its flat and wide grille. Other items that we can pick out include aggressive wheels/tires and large brakes.

Inside, the CTS will get Cadillac's CUE infotainment system, a stitched dash, and paddle shifters.

The big news lies under the hood. This CTS mule appears to be packing a twin-turbo V6 and the way we can tell that is due to the engine cover saying that. Speculation is the cover controls the unpleasant sounds of direct-injection system and is needed during the testing phase. Now, we're not sure if this the 3.0L TT, 3.6L TT, or if its a turbocharged engine at all. We'll find out in due time.

When Cadillac showed the XTS Platinum Concept at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, it was equipped with a 3.6L DI V6 and a plug-in hybrid system that produced a potent 350 HP. However, the production XTS probably won't have a hybrid version.

AutoGuide had the chance to sit down with Cadillac Communications Manager David Caldwell. Caldwell said a hybrid version of the XTS, either to provide more fuel-economy or power is highly unlikely. If Cadillac was to provide more power for the XTS, they would go in a different direction.

Its been a few months since we last heard anything about the rumored Omega RWD platform that could be underpinning future Cadillac flagships. Our last report in September said a sedan and hard top are in the works and will be appearing sometime in 2015.

A new report from Car and Driver says GM has a few Omega vehicles on the way, with the first one arriving sometime in 2015.

Omega will take hold of the larger RWD vehicles ranging from a midsize luxury sedan (CTS, 5-Series, E-Class) up to length of 207 inches (about the same length of an Audi A8L).

The first vehicle in question is the replacement for the still-need-be-launched Cadillac XTS. Car and Driver says the Omega-based replacement will arrive sometime in 2015. The vehicle will have GM's 3.6L DI V6 as a base, a twin-turbo version of the 3.6L, and V8 for an engine lineup. Also, a new eight-speed automatic and a new hybrid system are in the cards as well.

Going further down the rabbit hole, the long-rumored “flagship” Cadillac could eventually be spawned from the Omega platform; whether it takes the form of the Sixteen concept from 2003 or the Ciel concept from last year remains to be seen.

General Motors is including an iPad with the 2013 models of the Cadillac XTS, in the hopes of acclimating owners with the luxury vehicle's CUE infotainment system and other features.

The company hopes that customers will find the interactive experience helpful in getting the most out of their vehicles.

Cadillac's head of customer experience, Mark Harland, told Wired Magazine that Cadillac wants "to be the leader in customer experience."

The luxury carmaker is rolling out online and dealership-based initiatives to help owners with their new gadgets.

"We need to think about helping [owners] with the learning curve. Even if you get a walk-through at the dealership, you’re going to forget about a lot of the features. And we want the customer to learn about CUE on their own time," said Harland.

The XTS is meant to replace Cadillac's DTS. The DTS' predecessor, the Deville, had an age demographic of 69. No doubt Harland is mindful that baby-boomers may feel overwhelmed by Cadillac's promising system.

Want to Pique your CUEriosity? There's an app for that.

The iPad will come preloaded with the OnStar Remotelink and myCadillac apps as well as a program that is a CUE simulator.

Owners can learn the system's functionality without making accidental changes to their own vehicle's CUE system.

Cadillac is training 25 "connected consumer specialists" that will be teaching dealers on the brand's infotainments systems. Each dealership will be required to have at least two 'experts' on hand to assist customers with their vehicle's systems.

In addition, a call centre dedicated to CUE is being set up. Should customers still have trouble with their systems, a specialist will come directly to their home.

With summer just around the corner, Cadillac decided to announce pricing for the new ATS sedan today.

Pricing begins at $33,990 (Includes Destination) for the base 2.5L four-cylinder producing 200 HP and 188 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic, Cadillac says highway fuel economy will be "well over 30 mpg".

Want a bit more power? Well, the 2.0L turbo-four producing 270 HP and 260 lb-ft rings in at $35,795. Buyers will have the choice of either a six-speed manual or automatic, as well as rear or all-wheel drive.

The top dog of the ATS lineup, the 3.6L DI V6 producing about 320 HP comes in at $42,090. The 3.6L comes with automatic transmission, available AWD, Cadillac's CUE infotainment system, leather 8-way power seats with memory, adaptive start, and more.

2013 Cadillac ATS Priced from $33,990

New luxury sport sedan launches this summer

DETROIT – The all-new, rear-wheel-drive Cadillac ATS compact luxury sport sedan with a fuel-efficient 2.5L engine and next-generation six-speed transmission will be priced starting at $33,990, including destination charges. Highway fuel economy will be well over 30 mpg.

"The ATS enters a vehicle segment this year that's one of the most competitive in the market, from both a price and performance standpoint," said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. "ATS will bring a distinctive presence and compelling value while offering quick, nimble, fun-to-drive dynamics that will appeal to the lifestyles of modern luxury buyers and challenge the segment's status quo."

A mid-level model with a lightweight and powerful 2.0L turbocharged engine costs $35,795 including destination and will offer automatic and manual transmissions, and rear- or all-wheel drive.

Topping the engine range is a 3.6L V-6 with a preliminary rating of 320 horsepower, costing $42,090 including destination with an automatic transmission and standard content that includes CUE, leather 8-way power seats with memory, adaptive start and more. All-wheel drive will be available.

A full breakdown of availability and pricing of packages and options will be available later.

ATS goes on sale this summer, but already the new sport sedan is positively impacting Lansing, Mich., where more than 440 new employees have been hired at Cadillac's Lansing Grand River plant where the ATS will be assembled. A total of 600 new employees are expected to be part of Cadillac's $190 million investment in the facility.

A dedicated engineering team has traveled the globe refining and advancing the ATS to meet customer demands. The addition of advanced materials has reduced curb weight to less than 3,400 pounds, more than 100 pounds less than an Audi A4 or Mercedes-Benz C250.

Time spent at premier race tracks around the globe, including Road America, Road Atlanta, Phoenix International Raceway and the Nürburgring in Germany has enhanced the ATS' sporty ride and handling and engine tuning. The 3.6L model is expected to have a 0-60 mph acceleration time of well below six seconds.

Cadillac's new CUE user interface, standard on most ATS models, offers the first automotive use of capacitive touch to create an intuitive, modern way for drivers to interact with the car. This technology, used for most smartphones and tablet computers, uses electrodes to sense the conductive properties of objects, such as a finger.

According to this screen capture nabbed yesterday by tech blogger Christopher Price, for a short time OnStar’s 2014 compatibility guide listed the Cadillac ELR. The Cadillac ELR — whose name actually stands for “Electric Long Range” and not “Electric Luxury Roadster” — will more or less be a production version the Volt-based Converj luxury coupe concept shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Expect to see the Cadillac ELR introduced sometime next year. Aside from North America, Cadillac’s plug-in hybrid should also go on sale in China alongside the recently revealed Cadillac XTS.

Fast forward two months and two CTS mules are roaming the streets in a new set of spy shots.

As we reported back in February, the new CTS will use an extended version of the "Alpha" platform to help it better compete with the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6.

On this test mule, you can make out a large grill with two bold bars, projector headlamps with LED daytime runners, lots of radar sensors, and dual exhaust tips around the back.

The engine lineup will likely include 2.0T as the base engine, the 3.6L DI V6, and a turbocharged V6.

The next CTS is due sometime in late 2013 as a 2014 model.

Fast forward to today and new spy shots show the 2013 SRX with no camouflage and no plug-in hybrid.

Our spy shots show the SRX getting a modest update, with the front end getting a new grill and fascia.

The SRX will also sport a new interior, with a capacitive-touch center stack, much like the one on the new XTS.

Cadillac is in the process of revamping the sedan lineup. So far, the brand has shown the new XTS and ATS. The only one that hasn't been touched is the CTS, until now.

Today, the first spy shots of the new CTS were caught in the Northern Territories of Canada. Wearing the codename of A1LL, the next-generation CTS will ride on an extended version of the ATS’ Alpha platform to compete with the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Audi A6.

Cadillac's Art & Science design language will continue on the next CTS with a sharp C-pillar, angular exhaust cutouts, and a front end likely having some resemblance to the ATS.

But we're not sure this is the Alpha version of the CTS that everyone is reporting. To our eyes, this looks mid-cycle refresh of the current CTS. Which means that it's still using Sigma.

The next CTS is due out sometime in late 2013 as a 2014 model. Hopefully before then, we find out what the CTS is riding on.

The smallest Cadillac currently is the new ATS sedan. But that could be changing.

“The (compact) ATS sedan is not as small as we could go at Cadillac,” says Dave Leone, vehicle-line executive for the ATS. “The ATS is only the first entry. The ATS platform is scalable, so we could go smaller or larger.”

The ATS is 7.7 inches shorter than the CTS, but the platform could be scaled down even further, possibly spawing a competitor to the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, and Mercedes A-Class.

Leone went onto to say, a smaller ATS would “a legitimate entry in the largest segment in the industry, the small, entry-level luxury market.”

Motor Trend is reporting that a coupe version of the new Cadillac ATS has been put on hold. The reason lies in GM’s stock price dropping like a rock; 30% drop since from its November 2010 initial public offering price. GM hopes by delaying or cancelling projects to save money, that will raise their stock price up.

This is where we begin to enter the twilight zone of ATS rumors. For the past year, we’ve been hearing different models of the ATS moving around from going into development, put on the shelf, or being cancelled. Last year, rumors had said the ATS would come in Sedan, Wagon, Coupe, and Convertible form. So far, rumors have said the wagon is dead, the coupe is on hold, and the Convertible was dead before being resurrected. In other words, we have no idea what is coming.

When asked for comment by Autoblog, Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell gave the usual we don’t talk about future product line. But Caldwell did say “there has been no recent radical shift in strategy" for the ATS.

"We do plan to do variants. We haven't yet called our shot of how we're going to execute that." Caldwell said.

So what does that mean? Well, there will be more variations of the ATS besides the sedan. As to what, its still up in the air.

Inside Line reports that Cadillac is looking at building a two-seat roadster to compete with the likes of the BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. Sources inside Cadillac say the vehicle will use the Alpha platform, like in the new ATS.. It will likely share powertrain options with the ATS as well.

No other details have been released and its unknown if this will see the light of day.

Cadillac is hoping the third time is the charm with their entrance into the European market. The company told Autocar this week, they will build a RHD CTS-V for the United Kingdom as a start to a renewed commitment to taking markets outside U.S. more seriously. Currently the CTS-V is only offered in LHD, which means UK customers are locked out.

“We’re geared up for right-hand drive now. We’re working on it.” GM Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick said to Autocar.

Alongside the CTS-V’s conversion, Cadillac includes the ATS, its 3-Series warrior, as part of their commitment. Ewanick has faith in GM’s European success this time around, saying “we’ve signed in blood.”

“There wasn’t a commitment to the product before and we didn’t design cars to the market demands. The Germans do this very well. There is now a full resource commitment and a vision to get this right. Bankruptcy refocused GM,” Ewanick said.

Ewanick told Autocar new Cadillacs would be developed with global markets in mind, but also said there was no rush to get new models to market and would be replaced under normal lifecycles.

Following on the heels of introducing the new ATS, Cadillac is thinking about adding a smaller crossover.

“We’re looking at options there. I think it would go a little bit more head-to-head with like the X3,” said Kurt McNeil, Cadillac’s vice president of sales.

BMW's redesigned X3 has been a hit in the North American market. The new X3 was built with North American consumers in mind, which is the opposite of what Cadillac would have to do in order to profitably expand its portfolio.

“The fact that Cadillac is becoming more of a global brand will certainly play a role in that decision,” McNeil said.

If the Cadillac small crossover was approved, it could go either on Alpha platform or the Theta platform.

The last time Cadillac offered a diesel engine was back in the early eighties and was a horrid engine, tarnishing Cadillac's reputation and vehicles. But now, Cadillac is once again thinking about a diesel engine.

Don Butler, Cadillac’s marketing vice president said in a interview at the LA Auto Show that Cadillac was considering a diesel engine for vehicles sold outside the United States. He added a diesel engine “could be a potential hedge in the U.S. because of diesel’s great torque, great performance with great efficiency.”

“We absolutely mean it when we say we aim to compete with the best of the best without compromises. And if that means making the right powertrain choices, then those are the choices we will have to make,” said Butler.

It's unknown which Cadillac model will be first; but it's safe to assume either the upcoming ATS, CTS, or SRX will have one.

The picture you see here is the brand new 2013 Cadillac XTS. The picture was accidentally posted on Cadillac's home page today before being taken off. Luckily, a reader from Jalopnik captured the picture for all of us to see. Since then, Cadillac has confirmed this will be the XTS we see next week at the LA Auto Show.

The production model is almost a carbon copy of the XTS Platinum concept shown at last year's Detroit Auto Show, with a different design for head and foglights. The XTS will also have Cadillac's new CUE infotainment system.

Edit: GM has since officially released the XTS photograph. I've updated the photo in this article with the GM Media supplied one - DD
