In a surprising move today, Chrysler has halted Cherokee production at its Toledo, Ohio plant.

“We have been producing vehicles since the end of June and have now built the critical number of vehicles we need to stock dealerships once containment is released. We will temporarily idle the second shift so as not to put additional strain on our logistics partners to get these vehicles into the hands of customers as quickly and efficiently as possible upon release,” said Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson in a statement this afternoon.

Chrysler has idled 500 workers from the second shift and is expected to last two weeks. Other workers are being assigned to perform lengthy test drives of Cherokees.

Bruce Baumhower, president of United Auto Workers Local 12 told reporters that Cherokee is ready to go, but Chrysler is being very cautious.

"There's not a problem with the vehicle. The unusual thing on this launch, you've got a brand-new engine. It's never been used before. You've got a brand-new nine-speed transmission. You've got a brand-new torque converter. We're putting all those three things together and we want to make sure we get it perfect before they get released to the dealers."

*UPDATE* The Detroit News has learned from workers at the plant that the reason for the production stoppage is due to over 1,000 Cherokees still having problems with the nine-speed automatic transmission.

A few weeks ago, Chrysler put on a defying stance by saying no to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration order to recall about 2.7 million Jeep SUVs due to concerns of fires erupting from rear-end collisions.

"Chrysler Group has been working and sharing data with the Agency on this issue since September 2010. The company does not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective," the company said in a statement.

Today, the company changed course and announced they would recall the 2.7 million Jeep SUVs (1993-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty). Chrysler dealers will do an inspection on the affected vehicles, and the rear structure will be upgraded if necessary.

Chrysler still disagrees with NHTSA that a safety defect is apparent.

"Chrysler Group’s analysis of the data confirms that these vehicles are not defective and are among the safest in the peer group. Nonetheless, Chrysler Group recognizes that this matter has raised concerns for its customers and wants to take further steps, in coordination with NHTSA, to provide additional measures to supplement the safety of its vehicles."

In a surprising form of defiance, Chrysler has said no the demand made by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokees and Liberties due to fuel tanks that could catch on fire in a rear end accident.

NHTSA has been investigating since 2010 and alleges that 1993 through 2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002 through 2007 Liberty are more prone to fuel leaks and fires. In its analysis, NHTSA found that 51 deaths involved Grand Cherokees and Liberties in rear-end accidents that caught on fire. NHTSA alleges the reasons for this are the tanks being made out of plastic and being placed behind the rear axle.

In a statement released today, Chrysler says they do "not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective."

Chrysler goes onto say their "vehicles met and exceeded all applicable requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, including FMVSS 301, pertaining to fuel-system integrity."

Also, the company says in their tests the problem occurs less than once for every million years of vehicle operation and argues that NHTSA's analysis of the problem is not complete.

So what happens next? Motoramic reports that NHTSA could hold a public hearing and declare the two vehicles defective. The agency could also take Chrysler to court to force the recall.

It's a game of chicken and the question is, who blinks first?

Chrysler Group LLC Responds to NHTSA Recall Letter

June 4, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has issued a recall request letter proposing that Chrysler Group recall the Jeep Grand Cherokee in model years 1993 to 2004 and the Jeep Liberty in model years 2002 to 2007 (a total of approximately 2.7 million vehicles).

Chrysler Group has been working and sharing data with the Agency on this issue since September 2010. The company does not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective.

We believe NHTSA’s initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the Agency to resolve this disagreement.

“The safety of drivers and passengers has long been the first priority for Chrysler brands and that commitment remains steadfast,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chairman and CEO of Chrysler Group LLC. “The company stands behind the quality of its vehicles. All of us remain committed to continue working with NHTSA to provide information confirming the safety of these vehicles.”

Chrysler Group’s position on this matter is clear.

These vehicles met and exceeded all applicable requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, including FMVSS 301, pertaining to fuel-system integrity. Our analysis shows the incidents, which are the focus of this request, occur less than once for every million years of vehicle operation. This rate is similar to comparable vehicles produced and sold during the time in question.

Chrysler Group stands behind the quality and safety of its vehicles. It conducts voluntary recalls when they are warranted, and in most cases, before any notice or investigation request from NHTSA.

The Detroit Fress Press reports that production of the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee has been delayed by month due to “wide range of issues”.

“We did start with an initial scheduled plan of the third week in May, and now we are into mid-June. That is just due to a wide range of issues,” said Mark Chernoby, Chrysler’s senior vice president of engineering

Those issues range from adjusting both tooling and manual tasks on the assembly line to properly calibrating the new nine-speed automatic transmission.

“These are pretty much common issues with everything we launch. Especially if there is a major change with the powertrain,” said Chernoby.

Even with this delay, Chrysler are telling dealers that they will have a full stock of Cherokee by the time they are expected to go on sale in the fall.

Jeep is making some very ambitious goals with the introduction of the new 2014 Cherokee. One of those goals is to produce 250,000 Cherokees annually at Jeep's Toledo, Ohio plant.

"We are going to build almost half-a-million cars a year here in Toledo. We are going to do 220,000 with the Wrangler and we are going to do 250,000 on the Cherokee side," said Bruce Baumhower, president of UAW Local 12.

Whether Jeep meets this ambitious goal or not with the new Cherokee remains to be seen. Jeep does have a couple things going for it though. For starters, the Cherokee name in the nineties was a very popular vehicle, selling more than 100,000 Cherokees annually. Second is that demand for Jeep vehicles in Europe has been rising.

When Jeep released some of the shots of the new 2014 Cherokee before its official debut at the New York Auto Show, it was open season on the web as most everyone dog-piled on the looks of it.

However Chrysler’s design chief, Ralph Gilles is standing behind it. Talking with Wards Auto, Gilles explained that the Cherokee marks the next step in the evolution of the design for Jeep.

“When you contrast it to the outgoing Liberty…I think it’s a huge departure, obviously from the previous one. But it’s also going to be seen as very current in the way that Jeep has evolved its aesthetic to a very contemporary place. That was very much a purpose for us,” Gilles said.

Mark Allen, head of Jeep design says the Cherokee's design had one goal in mind: to make sure people want to buy the Cherokee five years from now.

“Our head was in 2019. It’s not a big square box. It’s a little more efficient looking than the Liberty. Our No.1 goal was efficiency, and if we’re going to make an efficient Jeep, it’s gotta look efficient first off,” Allen told Wards.

For those who wish the Jeep Wrangler could come with a diesel option, your wish might be coming true. Wards Auto had the chance to talk with Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley and asked about the possibility of a diesel for the Wrangler.

“Wrangler is on the radar to get (a) diesel. Remember we’re also going through the product change of Wrangler for 2015-16. That will probably be the right time to introduce the diesel into that vehicle," Manley revealed. “I’m confident that the Grand Cherokee will show just how large a demand there is for diesel, and I think what that will do is reinforce the need for us to target Wrangler as a vehicle that can take a diesel.”

If given the green light, the Wrangler would be forth diesel offered in the Chrysler family. The other three are the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500, and Ram ProMaster.

When Jeep introduces the new Liberty SUV at the New York Auto Show later in March, it might be wearing a new nameplate.

“There are clearly only two options for the name of this vehicle: It’s either going to be Cherokee or it’s going to be Liberty. We are going to make that decision in the very near future. Both of them are historical names, Cherokee more so than Liberty,” said Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley.

The Liberty replaced the Cherokee in 2002 and has been struggling for sales during its lifespan. Outside of North America, Jeep has left the Cherokee nameplate.

Also coming from Jeep is a new subcompact SUV coming within the next two years. The subcompact model would be based on the Fiat Panda and replace the Compass and Patriot models. Manley says the vehicle will be "a Jeep with Jeep DNA.”

Back in 1983, American Motors signed an agreement with Beijing Auto Works to build the Jeep Cherokee XJ. Two years after the agreement, Jeep Cherokees would roll off the line in Beijing. The agreement would solider on when Chrysler brought American Motors in the late eighties. Chrysler would end the agreement in 2009. But now, Jeep vehicles could be rolling off the line again in China.

According to Bloomberg, Fiat, Chrysler's parent company, is in talks with their Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group, to build Jeeps locally. This could include building Jeep's full lineup.

“The volume opportunity for us is very significant. We’re reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity” as well as “should we be localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio,” said Mike Manley, COO of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia and Jeep's president.

Manley was quick to say if this was to go ahead, building vehicles in China would only augment production in the U.S., not kill it.

Why is Fiat consider building Jeep vehicles overseas? Sales have been rapidly growing overseas, with 117,189 vehicles sold so far this year.

SRT is readying two new special editions of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 for the 2013 model year.

Named Vapor and Alpine, the difference between the two is black and white. Vapor comes in back, while Alpine comes in white, a first for the Grand Cherokee SRT8.

Other than different paint jobs, the two are identical. Both come with 20-inch wheels with a black chrome finish, gloss black hood and door badging, grille surrounds and inserts, and tailgate trim.

Besides the special editions, the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 also sees a price increase. The 2013 model begins at $60,920, including $925 in destination charges. That's due to SRT making the Luxury Group package standard. The package added items like leather-wrapped door and instrument panels, adaptive cruise control, and a power liftgate.

The Vapor and Alpine models start at $63,415.

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Aug 1, 2012 - The 2013 Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the most powerful, technologically advanced, high-performance Jeep® vehicle ever –– featuring a combination of Jeep’s legendary capability and utility, merged with the renowned advanced performance engineering from Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team.

Delivering outstanding driving performance in all conditions, and complemented by key SRT attributes – including functional, performance-oriented styling, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking and race-inspired interior appointments – the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 runs from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, 0-100-0 mph in the mid-16 second range, can cover the quarter mile in the mid-13 second range, has a top speed of 160 mph, and brakes from 60-0 mph in 116 feet.

Awe-inspiring powertrain

Powering the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 470 horsepower (351 kW) and 465 lb.-ft. (630 N•m) of torque.

An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wide rpm band. Specifically, 90-percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm, allowing for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance.

Standard Fuel Saver Technology and an active valve exhaust system allows four-cylinder operation to engage over a wide rpm range, to deliver both fuel efficiency and an extended range of 450 miles on one tank of gas.

Standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters join the standard Auto Stick on the floor. Both are mated to a proven automatic transmission, allowing a choice of spirited shifting on the road and the racetrack. Both methods give the driver the ability to shift while the transmission controller calibration prevents situations that might over rev the engine. Fully adaptive electronic control of all shifting makes the powertrain more responsive while minimizing harshness.

Outstanding ride, handling and capability

In 2011, all Jeep Grand Cherokee models received a vastly improved and refined on-road ride thanks in part to the vehicle’s new body structure. Torsional stiffness was improved 146 percent versus the previous generation model, for improved ride, durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. The improvements were achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone, marking a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive.

The 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the best handling Jeep vehicle ever – capable of .90 g on the skid pad – features a SRT-tuned, adaptive damping suspension managed by the Jeep Selec-Track system that interacts with several different systems (stability control, adaptive damping, transmission shift strategy, transfer case torque proportioning, Electronic Limited Slip Differential performance, throttle control and cylinder de-activation) to automatically tune the dynamics of the vehicle. Drivers can manually choose between five dynamic modes for specific driving conditions:

Auto: provides the most compliant ride and automatically adapts to any road situation using the adaptive suspension tuning

Sport: provides enhanced body control for a sporty, fun-to-drive ride for the street

Tow: provides a safe reduction in pitch and bounce for enhanced towing capability

Track: provides the high-performance, firm, “track-tuned” suspension option to lock down body motion for the ultimate handling experience

Snow: provides the most conservative dynamic mode, so the vehicle will safely stay
in-line in inclement winter weather conditions

The standard Jeep Quadra-Trac SRT active on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, the Jeep 4x4 system can transfer up to 100 percent of available torque to one rear wheel.

The transfer case also enhances handling by proportioning torque between the front and rear axles to maintain the driver’s intended path. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 also features an Electronic Limited Slip Differential, which eliminates rear wheel slip and improves handling.

The performance-tuned, fully hydraulic steering system uses a heavy-duty pump and pump cooler. Revised gearing gives drivers more direct feel and on-center response.

Split 5-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels ride on P295/45ZR20 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season run-flat tires or available Pirelli P Zero Three-season.

Rounding out the capability of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a trailer tow rating of 5,000 lbs.

Benchmark braking

Chrysler Group’s SRT vehicles are well known for their world-class braking. Stopping power for the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes courtesy of SRT high-performance Brembo brakes with four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS).

Stopping distance performance of 116 feet from 60-0 mph is made possible by red-painted, Brembo 6-piston (front) and 4-piston (rear) calipers, and vented rotors at all four corners measuring 15-inches (front) and 13.8-inches (rear).

Aggressive and functional exterior

The functional performance exterior of the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 features the “planted” look of a high-performance sports car by being lowered 1 inch and adding SRT-exclusive, body-color wheel flares and side sill cladding.

A one-piece front fascia contains LED multi-function daytime running lamps that result in an exclusive face for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, while a body-colored front grille with a unique black screen background and chrome bezel inserts add to the aggressive look.

The integrated lower front grille is painted in gloss black and a underbody belly pan features integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and fade performance. Completing the front end is a sculpted hood with functional dual black heat extractors for added engine cooling.

At the rear, the SRT performance influence continues with a liftgate spoiler that reduces drag and improves downforce. A unique one-piece rear fascia includes a separate air diffuser along with an available trailer receiver and access cover. The dual-sport exhaust system features 4-inch exhaust tips.

New for 2013 are two special models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 including the bright white “Alpine” edition and brilliant black “Vapor” edition.

Both models feature the addition of Black Vapor Chrome finish to the standard split 5-spoke, 20 inch wheels along with unique gloss black exterior appointments including:

Jeep hood badge

Grand Cherokee door badge

Front grille surround and inserts

Rear light bar and step pad

Race-inspired and high-performance interior

The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s refined, luxurious interior takes on a performance feel in SRT8 form with race-inspired technology and SRT-exclusive appointments.

The leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel features a unique satin chrome rim section with a flattened bottom surface – evoking a race-inspired cockpit – that showcases the SRT logo. Standard paddle-shift controls flank both sides of the contoured palm rests while all audio and Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) controls are accessible from the horizontal spokes on the steering wheel. A power tilt and telescoping steering column also is standard.

SRT-exclusive Performance Pages show instant feedback on steering input measurements, horsepower, torque, 0-60 mph time, 60-0 mph braking distance, G-forces, and one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times, along with expanded engine information.

Standard SRT-styled Nappa leather and suede seats, with sculpted bolsters and adjustable headrests, provide all the comfort for daily drives – and “grip” to keep the driver and passengers in place during spirited driving. The embroidered SRT logos and contrast stitching accent the two front seats. Heated (front and rear) and ventilated (front) seats are standard.

Also standard for 2013 are premium leather door trim panels, instrument panel and center console along with a power liftgate.

Carbon fiber accents are integrated into the instrument panel and door trim panels and bright, racing style brake and pedal pads add to the high-performance look inside the cabin. An available Command View dual-pane sun roof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sun roof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle.

Safety and security

Already a two-time winner of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 'Top Safety Pick' for the volume Grand Cherokee models, the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 offers consumers 45 safety and security features including:

Active head restraints: Deploy in the event of a rear collision. Restraints are designed to reduce injuries by minimizing the gap between the head restraint and the passenger’s head

Active turn signals: Turn signal flashes three times when stalk is depressed for one second to indicate a lane change

Adaptive cruise control (ACC): The system decreases the vehicle’s pre-set cruise-control speed when closing in on another vehicle in the same lane, or when another vehicle pulls into the same lane. The system will accelerate to the pre-set speed when the vehicle in front speeds up or moves into another lane. ACC will maintain a driver adjustable distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it, allowing the use of cruise control in light traffic without having to continuously adjust settings

Advanced multi-stage air bags: Inflates with a force appropriate to the severity of the impact Meets FMVSS 208 advanced air bag requirements for smaller, out-of-position occupants

Anti-lock brake system (ABS): Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions

Anti-lock brake system with rough-road detection: Anti-lock brake system capable of detecting if the vehicle is driving on a rough road by the oscillations in the wheel speed signals. When rough road is detected on off-road surfaces or trails, ABS enters a different pressure control where it will hold the brake pressure for longer pulses

BeltAlert: Activates a chime and/or illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver and front passenger to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without belted front-seat occupants

Blind-spot Monitoring (BSM): Uses dual ultra-wideband radar sensors to aid the driver when changing lanes, or if being passed by or passing unseen vehicles. The system notifies the driver of vehicle(s) in their blind spot via illuminated icons on the side view mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime

Brake Assist: In an emergency brake situation, the system applies maximum braking power, minimizing the stopping distance

Brake Override: When a disagreement exists between the throttle and the brake, the brake signal causes the engine controller to reduce engine power, allowing the operator to stop the car

Brake-traction control system (BTCS): Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning
during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes to the slipping wheel(s)

Child seat anchor system: LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats

Constant-force Retractors (CFR): Regulates the force exerted on the occupant by the seat belt, and then gradually releases seat-belt webbing in a controlled manner

Electronic roll mitigation (ERM): An extension of electronic stability control (ESC). Uses input from ESC sensors to anticipate if the vehicle is at risk of entering a potential roll situation, then applies the brakes individually and modulates the throttle position as needed

Electronic stability control (ESC): Enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. Provides the benefit in critical driving situations such as turns, and is valuable when driving on mixed surface conditions including snow, ice or gravel. If there is a discernible difference between driver input through the steering wheel and the vehicle’s path, ESC applies selective braking and throttle input to guide the vehicle back on to the driver’s intended path

Energy-absorbing steering column: The power-adjust steering column employs a calibrated bending element that deforms during column stroke for optimal energy management

Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS): Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking doors after air bag deployment. Also shuts off flow of fuel to the engine

Express Up/Down Windows: One-touch powered express up/down window button located on the front driver and passenger-side door

Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Using forward-facing radar sensors, this system detects when the vehicle may be approaching another vehicle too rapidly and alerts the driver so the driver can determine what action must be taken in order to prevent the vehicle from a collision

High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps: Provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination

Hill-start Assist (HSA): Assists drivers when starting a vehicle from a stop on a hill by maintaining the level of brake pressure applied for a short period of time after a driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal. If throttle is not applied within a short period of time after the driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal, brake pressure will be released

Keyless Enter-N-Go: When an individual enters the vehicle, electronic sensors detect if the vehicle key fob is present. The vehicle will then allow the individual to push a button to start the vehicle without having to insert the key into the ignition

Knee bolsters: The lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are designed to properly position the occupant during impact, enabling air bags to work effectively

Navigation system: Voice-activated navigation system available with real-time traffic to provide precise guidance to destination through the use of global positioning system (GPS) satellite technology

ParkSense rear park assist system: Assists at low speeds in reverse to detect stationary objects. Consists of audible warnings for the driver and has a display in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) integrated into the instrument cluster

ParkView rear back-up camera: Provides a wide-angle view of the area immediately behind the vehicle, giving the driver greater peace of mind before reversing at low speeds. Contains grid line to aid the driver when maneuvering into parking spaces or narrow areas. Also aids in lining up a trailer to the vehicle’s trailer hitch, when so equipped. The image is displayed on the navigation screen when the transmission is shifted into Reverse

Power tilt-and-telescoping steering column with memory: Allows steering column to tilt and move toward or away from the driver to achieve a safe and comfortable distance from the advanced multi-stage front driver air bag, if deployed

Rain Brake Support: Uses the ESC pump to occasionally push brake pads lightly against brake rotors in rainy conditions in order to keep rotors dry

Rain-sensing wipers: A driver convenience feature that automatically senses moisture on the windshield and activates wipers

Ready Alert Braking: Anticipates situations when the driver may initiate an emergency brake stop and uses the ESC pump to set brake pads against rotors in order to decrease the time required for full brake application

Rear Cross Path (RCP): In parking lot situations, this system warns drivers backing out of parking spaces of traffic moving toward their vehicle. It activates any time the vehicle is in Reverse. The driver is notified of vehicle(s) crossing behind the vehicle via illuminated icons on the sideview mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime

Remote (fob) operated windows (front windows - down only): Enable an individual to cool down the vehicle passively by opening front windows remotely

Remote keyless entry: Locks and unlocks doors and turns on interior lamps. If the vehicle is equipped with a security alarm, the remote also arms and disarms that system

Remote start: Conveniently starts the engine and activates key comfort settings based on ambient conditions by using the key fob while maintaining vehicle security

Rollover crash sensing: Senses a rollover and deploys seat belt pretensioners and/or standard full-length side-curtain air bags as needed

Seat-belt pretensioners: During a collision, impact sensors initiate front seat-belt pretensioners to remove slack in the seat belt system, thereby reducing the forward movement of the occupant’s head and torso

Sentry Key engine Immobilizer: Utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a preprogrammed security code to discourage vehicle theft. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder and the engine is allowed to start. If an incorrect key is used, the engine will shut off after a few seconds

Signal mirrors: Signal lamp built into the housing of exterior mirrors allows turn signals to be viewed from the front, as well as the sides and rear of the vehicle in order to alert oncoming traffic and pedestrians

SmartBeam headlamps: Headlamp system adjusts to ambient light and oncoming traffic to deliver maximum lighting

Standard full-length side-curtain air bags: Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. This type of air bag is housed in the headliner just above side windows

Standard seat-mounted side thorax air bags: Provide enhanced protection to the
driver and front outboard passenger in certain impacts. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor that autonomously triggers the air bag on the side where an impact occurs. Standard side air bags are housed within the outboard side of each front seat

Three-point seat belts: Front outboard seating positions and all rear seating positions have lap and shoulder belts

Tire-pressure monitoring (TPM): Informs driver when tire pressure is too low. Pressure-sensor modules within the valve stems of all four road wheels send continuous radio-frequency signals to a receiver and the system

Trailer-sway control (TSC): Reduces trailer sway and improves handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds and traffic. The system monitors the vehicle’s movement relative to the driver’s intended path, then applies alternating brake pressure to slow the vehicle and then increases the pressure on one front wheel in order to counteract the sway induced by the trailer

Uconnect Phone: In-vehicle, voice-activated communication system that allows customers to talk on their Bluetooth compatible phone with your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The built-in phonebook sync feature automatically downloads as many as 1,000 phone book entries from supported phones, which can then be selected by simply saying contact name

As we reported back in June, Jeep is planning a short 2013 model year for the Grand Cherokee to make way for the 2014 model. The 2014 model will bring forth a new diesel and a eight-speed transmission. What 2014 will also bring is a updated Grand Cherokee to go with those two items.

Spy shots of a camouflaged group of Grand Cherokees have been caught and reveal some changes incoming for the 2014 model. The exteriors on this group of Grand Cherokees narrower upper and lower grilles, new fog lights and possibly a bit more curve for the front.

The interiors were covered up, possibly hiding a large touchscreen for the dash.

Back in January, Chrysler made the announcement that the Jeep Grand Cherokee would be getting a diesel engine in 2013. We thought that would be for the 2013 model year, but it appears that it will be for 2014 Model Year.

Now that seems like some bad news, but don't fret. According to Automotive News, Jeep will shorten the 2013 Model Year Grand Cherokee to make way for the 2014 Model Year to come out as soon as January.

A source says the diesel engine that will be used in the Grand Cherokee is the same one used in Europe; a 3.0L diesel V6 from VM Motori delivering 241 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

Also coming in the 2014 Grand Cherokee will be a ZF eight-speed automatic.

We've been talking about the new Jeep Liberty for the past couple of months. We've learned so far the new Liberty will use Fiat's new CUSW Plus platform, and come with a new 3.2L V6 and nine-speed ZF transmission. Now, some new spy shots from Automobile Magazine show a new powertrain undergoing some tests.

The spy shots show a raised Alfa Romeo Guiletta mule (Jeep Liberty) wearing a prominent sticker warning that premium gasoline must be used. The front end features a large intercooler.

If this Jeep mule does have a turbocharged engine, it could be the 1.4L turbo four from that will be offered in the 2013 Dodge Dart. Also, there is a rumored turbocharged version of the Tigershark 2.4L four-cylinder.

With much bated breath, Jeep enthusiasts have been keeping a close eye on what will turn up to replace the Liberty. While most, if not all Jeep-philes have been clamoring for a revival of sorts of the venerable old XJ Cherokee — the SUV the Liberty originally replaced back in 2001 — recent news seems to suggest that Jeep’s upcoming new model will be anything but. We’ve seen the photos of a few mutilated Alfa Romeo Giuliettas running around in hiking boots on stilts. After that, what those images suggested was confirmed; the Liberty’s replacement would use a Super-Sized version of the front-drive CUSW platform that pins the upcoming Dodge Dart compact sedan. It’s that news that has hardcore Jeep fans everywhere worried the brand is catering more to buyers who buy Jeeps just for the “rough-n-ready, tough-n-steady” image, not for the legendary, uber military-grade off-road capability they’re renowned for.

On the upside though, it was also more or less confirmed afterward the new mid-sized Jeep would have a nine-speed auto and a 3.2 liter version of the corporate Pentastar V6. However, that news alone is by no means enough to put any worries the die-hard Jeep guys out there have about the Liberty’s replacement to bed.

Lately, after a media preview of a few new Jeep concepts set to officially debut during the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, Jeep’s chief designer Mark Allen spilled a little info about the Liberty’s replacement to the Toledo Blade. And while what’s coming down the pipeline is certainly going to be much different from the current model, Allen says there is no chance the new model is going to disappoint anyone expecting it to live up to Jeep’s rugged image.

“It’s definitely not the old Liberty,” Allen said. “It’s a step in the right direction. It’s a much more efficient Jeep. It’s a much more efficient-looking Jeep, honestly. It’s not what we have now.” Mr. Allen declined to give any technical details about the upcoming model, only saying that he was proud of its design.

Aside from the shrunken Pentastar V6 and umpteen-speed transmission which should help with fuel economy, the Liberty’s replacement should offer all-wheel drive in addition to the front-wheel drive layout expected on lesser trims. Dealers who have been keyed in on the new model’s front-wheel drive offerings aren’t worried it will turn away any potential buyers, though. Neither is Mark Allen, although he is aware of concerns Jeep loyalists have about another front-wheel drive Jeep joining the stable.

“Will it have off-road chops? It will. I’m impressed with what I’ve seen so far,” he said. “It’s not a Giulietta with a Jeep body on it. It’s not. There’s some specific Jeep hardware in it.”

As for what they’ll call it? While Chrysler officials haven’t said anything, it seems as if they’ll either continue with the Liberty moniker or bring the Cherokee name out of mothballs. When asked about the issue, Jeep’s CEO Mike Manley said, “The Cherokee has a huge amount of equity. Liberty, I think, has built up some equity as well. I don’t think we’re going to invent a name.”

Manley says the Liberty’s replacement will debut early next year, and that only means one venue: the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

Next year at the Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler will unveil the new Jeep Liberty, and when the new Liberty appears, it will have a new downsized version of Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar V6.

Automotive News reports Chrysler will offer a downsized 3.2-liter V6 in the Liberty mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission sourced from ZF according to two sources.

"You should not underestimate the weight of transmissions" to improve fuel efficiency. If we had known the eight-speed [automatic transmission] was coming, we would have made the [3.6-liter] Pentastar a 3.2-liter" engine," said Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne to Automotive News at the Geneva Motor Show.

The current Liberty is equipped with a 3.7L SOHC V6 that produces 210 HP and 235 lb-ft of torque going through a four-speed automatic transmission. That combo gives the Liberty EPA ratings of 16 City/22 Highway for the rear-drive model, and 15 City/21 Highway for the four-wheel drive model.

The question now is, where else will the 3.2L appear in the Chrysler lineup?

A new small Jeep has been delayed. According to Automotive News, the new Jeep has been pushed back due to a review of future investments by Fiat.

The new Jeep, codenamed B-SUV would use Fiat’s new Small Wide platform, which also underpins the new 500L. The model would be placed underneath the Compass and Patriot in Jeep’s lineup.

Fiat’s plan called on a $1.3 billion expansion of Fiat's Mirafiori plant in Italy to build Jeep and a Fiat version of the B-SUV.. Now, Fiat will begin building their version to replace the Sedici, which is currently based on the Suzuki SX4. Production of the Fiat model will begin sometime in 2013, while the Jeep will begin a year later.

January 5, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group LLC is strengthening its ties with the City of Detroit by adding a third crew and 1,100 new jobs at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit (JNAP), expanding the Jeep® Grand Cherokee lineup to include a diesel version for North America in the city and reaffirming plans to add 150 jobs by reopening its Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, also located in the Motor City for production of the ultimate American sports car – the SRT Viper.

"Our future, like the history of our brands, is interwoven with the City of Detroit," said Chrysler Group Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne. "Detroit long has been home to renowned innovators and craftsmen. So it is in the Motor City, home of our industrial heritage and a resilient people, that we are entrusting the manufacture not only of the ultimate American sports car, the SRT Viper, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee – the most awarded SUV ever – but also a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee for North American markets.

"We believe that investing in Detroit is not only the right thing to do, but it is a smart thing to do as we work to write the next chapter in our shared history," Marchionne said.

Through its new commitments in the Motor City – the city in which the Company has its earliest roots – Chrysler Group is embracing its Detroit heritage and weaving it into the fiber of its future plans, which include producing fuel-efficient, environmentally clean vehicles, such as a Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel. And by adding 1,250 jobs at its two downtown Detroit manufacturing plants, Chrysler Group is demonstrating its belief in the passion, skill and steadfast dedication of the Motor City to build luxurious, high-quality, state-of-the art vehicles that are true to a shared heritage and aspire to create a better and sustainable future.

"We are pleased to have Chrysler Group acknowledge the contributions of the UAW here in the Motor City by relying on our workforce to produce two of its most acclaimed vehicles," said General Holiefield, UAW Vice President-Chrysler Department. "Our workers nationwide have had a rough couple of years along with the American auto industry and we are proud to be partners in building a future of success starting right here in Detroit."

The new third crew of approximately 1,100 jobs that Chrysler Group is adding at JNAP, home of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango, will be part of an operating pattern, called the 3-2-120 schedule, that allows each employee an additional 49 days off per year while enabling the plant an additional 49 days of annual production.

JNAP was the first Chrysler Group plant in Michigan to add a second crew of production, or about 1,100 jobs, in July 2010. It also was the first Chrysler Group plant to add new hires to its ranks. Current employment at the plant is approximately 2,890.

The new jobs and product announcements build upon Chrysler Group's existing commitment, announced last month, to reopen the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant to produce the next generation SRT Viper. With Conner's reopening, nearly 150 hourly and salaried jobs will return to the City of Detroit.

The next generation Viper will make its return to the product lineup late this year as a 2013 model. Conner employees began reporting for training and orientation in the fall.

For the longest time, Jeep enthusiasts have been clamoring for a Wrangler pickup. The closest Jeep has come to making this dream come true is offer a kit called JK8 Independence that changes a Wrangler Unlimited into a Wrangler Truck. And the kits are flying off the shelf.

Ward’s Auto reports that Mopar was estimating orders for the kit to be around 200-300. However, dealer orders for the kit are around 400. Mopar President Pietro Gorlier said Mopar is stepping up and getting kits sent out to dealers.

Of course, thoughts turn to whether this means a production version will come out. Gorlier said that public response will play a huge part in future of a Wrangler pickup but warned the company “needs to balance the excitement of those who are blogging with real [sales] numbers.”

But Gorlier does point out Jeep President Mike Manley has gone on record as saying that the next redesign of the Wrangler could include a pickup option, though no definite plans have been announced.
