Robert Hall posted May Car Spotting Thread in The Lounge.

Rain and mud, rain and mud, rain and mud.   Now getting some warm sunny weather.

3-4 days a week I'm down at my mud farm working to clean up, clean out, and get my stuff out of the muck in preparation to unload it all.  My sister and I have been able to find a fair number of old family photos and mementos.   Now that it's warmer and dryer,  I've been trying to get my late brother's vehicles up and running, so far no luck on getting most to start. Bought a few batteries, been trying to charge up others. Did get the '09 Ranger running and outside.   I've found the keys to over half of them, got a locksmith to make keys for more last week.  He couldn't key two of the motorcycles, one had a busted ignition and the other is '15 Triumph that requires the dealer to rekey.    What a mess...

My brother was obsessed with putting stickers and flags on his vehicles.

All in all, it's been frustrating and sad to deal with all of this..but I knew it was inevitable (part of why I moved back to Ohio 5 years ago was the inevitability of dealing with the farm).

Robert Hall

On the freeway tonight saw a clean dark red G6 convertible, top down. Don’t see those very often. Saw a red VW New Beetle convertible with the left rear taillight out and the right front headlight out.   And as proof Ohio doesn’t do inspections saw a ratty early ‘00s Silverado that had the bed barely attached to the frame, so much rust,no tailgate and the left rear fender leaning in and strapped to the right one…only one taillight.  The cab appeared partially detached from the frame also.

David

I honestly think there should be a national standard of safety inspection to keep the roads and auto's safe for all, I saw today when I ran out to get some errands done at lunch a Toyota Corolla and Honda Accord that both had front and rear bumper facia's missing and also tail/headlights missing.

Driving is a privilege earned and not a right and if these people cannot keep the auto in proper working condition and safe, then those auto's need to be removed from the road. Crazy how some will drive auto's that are death traps IMHO.

Saw an old Rat rod that @balthazar would have loved all in primer grey, clearly a work in progress, but at least all bumpers, lights functional and windshield wipers were working and there.

🤔 Been a while since we have seen @balthazar posting, anyone hear from him? Hope he is all right and just busy with work.

David posted Cadillac News: Cadillac LYRIQ Delivery Grows Closer in Cadillac.

Cadillac has announced new details in the brand’s transformation to an electric future and a transformative EV customer experience, including ordering information, pricing and EPA-estimated range for the 2023 LYRIQ RWD.

Cadillac also announced a special charging offer, designed to simplify the charging experience for LYRIQ customers.

“These are important steps for Cadillac, as we make good on our promise to deliver an EV offering more than 300 miles of range and move toward an all-electric portfolio by 2030,” said Global Cadillac Vice President Rory Harvey. “Cadillac will define the future of luxury transportation through its range of forthcoming EVs, and it all begins with LYRIQ.”

Ordering for the 2023 LYRIQ RWD and AWD models will open on May 19, with RWD deliveries expected starting this fall. Deliveries of the 2023 LYRIQ Debut Edition, which was available through reservation only, will begin this summer.

The LYRIQ RWD model offers an EPA-estimated 312 miles of range on a full charge1 and has a starting MSRP of $62,9902. The AWD model, which will start at $64,9902, adds a second drive unit, placed at the front of the vehicle to enhance vehicle dynamics and performance even further for drivers. When orders open, customers will now have the option to select from two new exterior colors: Opulent Blue Metallic3 and Crystal White Tricoat3.

Initial deliveries of the AWD model are expected to start in early 2023, with EPA-estimated range expected to be announced closer to the start of production.

Creating a Seamless Charging Experience
All 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ customers will receive the option to choose either two years of unlimited public charging credits at EVgo charging stations or a credit of up to $1,500 toward home charger installation through Qmerit4. Customers who select the home charger installation credit will receive up to $1,500 that can be applied toward an eligible professional installation of a Level 2 (AC) charger or at 240-volt outlet at home through Qmerit, for convenient, quick charging of the LYRIQ’s battery5.

For customers looking to install a home charger, Cadillac can help throughout the process. Every Cadillac LYRIQ comes with a portable dual-level cordset charger, which enables customers to charge their vehicles from both 120-volt and 240-volt outlets. Through Cadillac accessories, customers will be able to purchase faster 11.5 kilowatt or 19.2kW wall-mounted charging stations. By installing a 240-volt outlet or wall charger, customers can reduce the time it takes to charge a depleted battery from 3 days to overnight6.

For installation assistance, Cadillac is working with Qmerit, a nationwide network to help owners find qualified, experienced Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment installers.

“This unique offer will elevate our customers’ experience with the LYRIQ, helping them make a smoother, more transparent transition to all-electric driving,” said Harvey. “Like the LYRIQ itself, the charging experience will set the standard for customers’ EV experiences.”

LYRIQ Drives the Future
The all-new LYRIQ elevates an iconic brand, building on a century of Cadillac’s design and technology innovations to usher in a new era in electric luxury vehicles.

It is designed with premier technologies and stirring performance capabilities, enabled by the vehicle’s dedicated electric architecture. A 12-module, 100 kWh battery pack delivers a Cadillac-estimated 340 horsepower and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque in the RWD model, while the AWD model amps up the output, with the addition of a second drive unit that raises capability with an estimated 500 horsepower.

The AWD model is further distinguished with performance-oriented driving dynamics with power flowing through all four wheels, along with a 3,500-pound trailering capacity7.

The LYRIQ RWD model offers an EPA-estimated range of 312 miles with a full charge1. That range is optimized with the Ultium Platform’s energy recovery system, which can capture and repurpose waste energy from the battery. In addition to optimizing range, the system can also help reduce battery energy needed for heating, increase charging speed and even contribute to the vehicle’s performance driving dynamics.

When it comes to charging, LYRIQ offers at-home Level 2 (AC) charge rates of up to 19.2 kW, which can add up to 52 miles of range per hour of charge8. It also features DC fast charging rates of up to 190 kW, enabling an estimated 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes6 of charging time.

Artfully Integrated Technology
Cadillac’s user experience9 system and 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED display, artfully integrate the driver information center, navigation and infotainment systems to communicate information to customers in an organic, intuitive way.

Additional technologies are designed to immerse the driver and passengers and enhance their journey. Highlights include:

AKG Studio 19-speaker audio system, including headrest speakers, is a Cadillac-exclusive feature that employs advanced technologies, including Adaptive Volume and Surround Technology, to create an immersive listening experience Google Built-In10 compatibility offers a helpful and personalized way to enhance the in-vehicle experience, with Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play delivering access to hands-free help, live traffic updates, favorite apps and more Next-generation Active Noise Cancellation helps cancel out undesirable sounds coming from the roadway. This technology, when combined with LYRIQ’s Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement, which balances and blends the propulsion system’s sounds, creates a luxurious and quiet cabin.

The Cadillac LYRIQ is produced at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly facility11, which received a $2 billion investment to support electric vehicle production. An additional $2.3 billion is being invested in an all-new battery cell manufacturing plant at Spring Hill, by Ultium Cells LLC, the joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solution.

Now that I look at this, the Olds 88 in coupe form did have a strange roofline, putting such a big rear window in the sail panel and with thin pillars adjacent to the backlite.  I'm sure they could have come up with something different and less clunky.  The coupe treatment of the bigger 98 worked much better.  However, of all the big coupes from that year, the Pontiac Bonneville and Grand Ville, outfitted with Pontiac alloy rally wheels, won in the looks department.

It's amazing what rectangular headlamps did for these cars.  Amazing.  It really allowed them to clean up the lines around the grilles.  If I recall, the strip speedometer prevailed, but, for some of these cars, gauges were available in small "boxes" inserted below it on the dash (or maybe that was the next-gen, when the downsize came).

The 98 of this era was one of a kind, again helped by rectangular headlamps in this year.  The sort of finned rear lamps that ended at the bumper, instead of continuing on below the bumper line, made it easier on the eyes than the equivalent Cadillac.  And I'd much prefer an Olds 455 V8 under the hood to Cadillac's absurd 500 c.i. V8.  (Realistically, the Olds 350 V8 could have lugged the 98 around, seeing it was the base engine in the 88 series.) Not only that, the 98 was quite a bit better looking in its lines than the equivalent Buick - Electra/225/Park Avenue - where the rear bumper and busy horizontal light fascia weren't that appealing.  Based on my high school French classes, I later nicknamed the 98 of this era "la cathedrale roulante" because of its rear taillamps.

Pontiac stopped production of V8 engines in 1981.  A 1985 model is most likely a Olds 307.

NINETY EIGHT REGENCY

The Chevrolet 305  used in the Caprice was an option during this time. They used the Chevrolet 305 and Oldsmobile 307 V8. I found out the hard way and through information. I assumed that they only used the Chevrolet 305 and found out that was not the case. The  sedan and wagons used the Oldsmobile 307 V8.   So the 305 and 307 were both used during this time frame.

David posted GM News: Future of GM autos is a Collaboration between Red Hat and GM in trailblazing the Future of Software-Defined Vehicles! in General Motors.

GM will move forward in building their vehicles for the 21st century on their Ultium Platform using the Ultifi software Platform to power the vehicles of the 21st century using the Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System, which provides a functional-safety certified Linux operating system.

Press Release:

The collaboration between Red Hat and GM is a significant moment in the convergence of the transportation and technology industries, with Red Hat's cloud-native, enterprise-grade open source operating system accelerating the development of GM’s software-defined vehicle programs following Ultifi’s initial launch. This will enable both companies to offer customers more valuable features responsibly and reliably in a fraction of the typical development time.

“General Motors is now a platform company and working with Red Hat is a critical element in advancing our Ultifi software development,” said Scott Miller, GM vice president, Software-Defined Vehicle and Operating System. “Incorporating the company’s expertise in open source solutions and enterprise networks will pay dividends as we aim to provide the most developer-friendly software platform in the industry. With Red Hat’s operating system as a core enabler of Ultifi’s capabilities, the opportunity for innovation becomes limitless.”

In-vehicle software systems are complex and require high levels of cybersecurity protection and stringent certifications due to critical safety priorities. In current systems, these robust requirements can often lengthen the development process and make vehicle software updates difficult, with each update requiring recertification. Together, GM and Red Hat intend to make these complex vehicle updates simpler and more frequent by implementing continuous functional-safety certification into the Ultifi platform with Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System pioneering the continuous certification approach, announced last year.

“With millions of lines of code sustaining critical systems like driver assistance, fuel economy and more, modern vehicles are more like mobile high performance computers than the cars of the past. The time to innovate is now,” said Francis Chow, Red Hat vice president and general manager, In-Vehicle Operating System and Edge. “These new vehicles give our industries a chance to create a common open platform without sacrificing functional safety. By collaborating with GM on the Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System, we intend to bring the era of open source to the automotive world, benefiting automakers, ecosystem partners, and consumers.”

GM-Software-Engineering.mp4

The integrated software is expected to support a variety of in-vehicle safety- and non-safety-related applications, including infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems, body control and connectivity. The transportation industry can benefit from faster innovation and better sustainability through standardization with open source Linux and cloud-native technologies, and GM intends to lead with Red Hat. Common standards can help increase software reuse and achieve a more scalable design process, giving GM the ability to dedicate more resources toward new personalized in-cabin experiences, vehicle modes and other features customers will enjoy.

With the integration of the Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating System into the Ultifi platform, GM and Red Hat look to achieve:

Reduced costs from consolidation and reuse of software across a common platform An improved development cycle for faster time-to-market with new customer features and software improvements A continuous functional-safety certification for systems related to safety applications Creation of new services, business models and revenue streams

Red Hat will contribute to the phased rollout of Ultifi, GM’s end-to-end vehicle software platform, which will launch in 2023. Ultifi will enable more frequent and seamless delivery of software-defined features, apps and services to customers over the air. To do this, the platform separates the application software from the hardware to offer application program interfaces for software development. Creating a more flexible architecture unlocks the potential for more cloud-based services, faster software development and new value for customers without affecting basic hardware controls.

As a Linux-based system, Ultifi is designed to be universally usable for GM developers, suppliers and the developer community at large. Using Linux allows for skilled talent from many industries to quickly get up to speed and bolster innovation through nontraditional thinking. With numerous sensors and rich amounts of anonymized data, vehicle software presents a uniquely exciting opportunity for developers to work beyond the limits of typical consumer smart devices. In fact, authorized third-party developers who meet strict security, safety and privacy standards will be given access to innovate on Ultifi to benefit GM customers directly.

Remember, GM did use the locked down NT Kernel for some time, I have to think this change is them wanting a different user experience as well as a look and feel that is very different than what Microsoft offers.

While I love the Mach-E and F150 Lighting EVs, I have yet to be impressed with the NT Kernel SYNC system.

Here is hoping that GM hits a true home run as this system is already in the Cadillac LYRIQ and HUMMER by GMC.

Linux is far more reliable than windows, faster too.

trinacriabob posted Cars you may have spotted in May in The Lounge.

In the first few days of the month, I went to get some strawberries on the cheap and saw this in the parking lot ...

... early '90s Ford Tempo coupe in "LL Bean / Eddie Bauer colors" that were popular for cars in that decade

... plastic manual window cranks ... it was nighttime.

Spotted on Cinco de Mayo.  This Sedan de Ville had less than 100,000 miles on it. And, being a 1977, this car is 45 years old! While I appreciate the car, it's not something I'd want.  I didn't even crank the key to hear what the engine might sound like.  Almost all of the boulevardiers from this era tend to lose the quiet exhaust notes of when they were new(er), which is too bad.

The downsizing from 1976 helped this model, but maybe less so for some of the other full-sizes like those by Pontiac

This car sure has a balanced profile.  I like how they raised up the rear wheel well without putting a skirt on it.  It could have used a piece of chrome on the B-pillar.

Looking over these sorts of lines and through a hood ornament is a thing of the past.

The padded vinyl roofs looked great on almost all GM full-sizes of this era, and some mid-sizes as well.

Fairly nice looking dashboard with a protruding center stack and a cowl ridge at the top of it.  Circular gauges would have been nice, but that time hadn't yet arrived.

This is a view of the interior of the cabin.  Cadillac seemed to have ditched some of the really gaudy cloth interior choices from years before to go with simpler mono-color ones like you see here. Cadillac always paid attention to their interior lighting, like the one you see on the rear sail panel.

This is some generous legroom in the rear of the cabin.

Bottom line:  what a majestic vehicle.

Spotted two days ago, VW's Passat has come a long way and is now a fairly substantial car ...

Spotted yesterday around the Houston Galleria, I also saw another Porsche (Panamera 4 door, maybe) in this exact same new color (a lot of enamel paint jobs on expensive cars lately) some 5 minutes earlier ...
