Welcome to Sketch Competition #29! Head Honchos at the Ren-Cen are spending many a sleepless nights looking at success of one diminutive little car and its variants. The car and its variants have caught the world raving about their design, quality and most importantly their price. Priced between $12,000 to $20,000 the vehicles have become bestsellers in lot of countries around the globe. GM wants to answer this car family and answer it right to claw back its market share and show its design renaissance. You are the newly appointed GM designer who has an impressive portfolio while finishing the design school. GM needs new ideas and you fit the bill. The car and its var…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #28! Times are changing, and GM is on a diet and shrinking fast. Three brands have been eliminated, and Pontiac seems to have found a dead end road being named a "niche brand" and only possessing mostly pathetic excuses for Pontiacs. Only one of these cars is available as RWD with a V8. The others are badge engineered junk from Chevrolet and Toyota. Let's make today both Pontiac's day and yours and create a real Pontiac. A niche car for a niche brand. Please design the best Pontiac in years in terms of design and powertrain. Be it a Trans Am, Firehawk, GTO, Banshee, Bonneville, or Solstice make sure this niche model has the ultimate se…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #27! Efficiency is the name, speed and handling is the game: will you step up to the plate? GM hit the nail on the head with the 2009 Cobalt SS Turbo, setting records on the Nurburgring and being named one of the top fun-factor cars on the market while retaining good gas mileage. However, it's time for a new era. One where GM's sport compact car doesn't just set performance records, but one that is exceptionally beautiful and high quality on the inside and out. Should you accept, your task will be to design GM's next high-revving Sport Compact coupe from Chevy, Pontiac, or Saturn. FWD, AWD, or RWD, you tell us. However, this car should…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #26! With all the pain and agony that everyone, especially GM, is going through in the industry right now, everybody needs that one vehicle to bring their name to the top, a savior so to speak. GM's got rumors of a couple brands being on the chopping block or for sale and the whole industry is in for a change soon due to CAFE. However, is it an economical car that would bring GM's most lacking brands to the top? Maybe, but not necessarily in an industry like today's, where every car must have the fit and finish of a Cadillac and looks that stand out from the crowd. Should you accept, your task will be to design the savior car to any GM…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #25! Imagine what it would be like if Pontiac were a little bit different; if it were placed much further upscale and sold in much smaller numbers. It would still be the sporty, muscular, sexy Pontiac that we know and love, but there would be more mystique to owning one. You know.. like a Ferrari. Ferrari basically targets the same crowd, just much further up the economic food chain. So what would a Pontiac be like if it were to sell for $200,000? What would it look like, what would it be called, what would power it? Should you accept, your task will be to design Pontiac's answer to the Ferrari F430. Obviously this is just a dream and …

Welcome to Sketch Competition #24! A couple years back when the G5 debuted, we believed it to be a stopgap to fill the spot between Pontiac's Sunfire and a new RWD entry-level vehicle. Well, the time to replace this vehicle is coming up quickly, but time is changing the industry even quicker as CAFE and the government rule automakers' say in what they produce. Will the G5 remain the same size? Will it become more aerodynamic? Will it even be RWD in its next generation? Why don't you give us an idea of what we could expect in a few more years. Should you accept, your task will be to design a next generation Pontiac G5. Right now all we know is that the industry is …

Welcome to Sketch Competition #23! While we know that the Corvette is legendary, there is and always has been the possibility of making another vehicle off of the Corvette platform. Cadillac jumped on board to use this platform for the XLR a few years back, but not many rumors are flowing regarding the XLR's existence past the current generation. After the debut of the next-generation Corvette, who knows if it will be accompanied by a sister car? Should you accept, your task will be to design a 2012 Corvette-based sportscar. Welcome to Sketch Competition #22! While its been confirmed that we'll see another version of the Cobalt in 2010, the future of its HHR companion isn't so cut-and-dried. The popular retro-influenced wagon has seen several variations already in its lifetime, including a panel wagon and the hot upcoming SS and we think its sales will certainly justify its continutation. Therefore, the largest problem with the HHR is where does it go from here. Retro is constantly said to be hard to update and it seems the only way that retro has survived as been to just wither on the vine (PT, Beetle). Time to prove them wrong. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design the…

Here's a quick sketch I did at lunch with an idea for a more youthfull approach. Chevy needs to go after Scion and this could be the vehicle for it, so streamline the "retro" and make it more focused...creat more desire for it with mega personalization parts.

Welcome to Sketch Competition #21! As hinted at back in the last Sketch Competition, there's a sequel and this is it. For all the naysaying and critiquing, the Kappa twins have been rather successful, both in their own sales - way outpacing the Miata with the Solstice alone - and in their halo effect, driving people into Pontiac showrooms and heralding a new era for Saturn, respectively. But what if it didn't just end there? Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design a Kappa-based car for any other GM division. Though bodystyles should be limited to convertible, coupe, or hatch, the styling is completely up to you. Whether you want a baby Corvette under…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #20! Sexy. Fast. Exciting. Old? All terms that can adequately describe the current crop of Kappa roadsters, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn SKY. And though certainly not old to the public, to us they may seem a bit - well - been there, done that. After all, we have been witnessing the Solstice's gestation for the years leading up to its debut and that goes for SKY as well. By the time any car reaches the showrooms, we've already become used to it and are looking ahead to the next big thing. Even more relevant to the current Kappas is the fact that they were, frankly, cobbled together from exisitng leftover componants and do have some defi…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #19! Though certainly not as beloved as the Corvette, Chevrolet's little Aveo is not something to be ashamed of. Quite the opposite, as a matter of fact; the little Korean compact is America's second best-selling subcompact (behind only the Yaris) and still the only domestic offering in its class. And, with recent improvements, its become a car whose only real sacrifice is exterior bulk. As fuel prices continue to climb, traditionally low sales of smaller vehicles can only go up, especially as new entries from Ford, Chrysler, and others find their way stateside. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design the next generation …

Welcome to Sketch Competition #17! Its never too early to start thinking about the future. Well, maybe its a little early in this case, but there's nothing wrong with it at all. In the near future, the Saturn division will boast a lineup of very modern, very recent products through which it can establish itself as a full-line auto brand. However, of what concrete information we know, there may very well be a few holes in their lineup that could be filled; what fills it is a mystery. You, however, can fill in that gap. Welcome to Sketch Competition #16! We've heard growing rumblings of Pontiac looking to migrate the majority of its lineup to rear-wheel drive platforms in the coming years and one of the prime candidates for this transition is the G6. As the current front-wheel drive Epsilon structure enters its twilight years and a new rear-wheel drive Alpha platform in the works, now is the perfect time to start considering a move that would certainly ignite much enthusiasm for Pontiac's most popular model. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design the next-generation Pontiac G6 on the RWD Alpha platform. Take into consideration the wide variety of Pontiac traits avai…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #15! Revolutions bring about change and for enthusiasts of a certain model of car, the most uncomfortable change is that of a nameplate. Often, a different badge on the car changes very little about the car itself. Other times, it means a sea of difference between the old and new guard. More often than not, a car is simply dumped never to be used again. Well, if you missed it, how about bringing it back? Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to resurrect a defunct GM nameplate as a new model. You have carte blanche to use pretty much any nameplate you want, from Sonoma to Sunbird, LeMans to LeSabre, any car you were fond of or t…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #14! The Cobalt is getting old. Well. No. Not entirely, though with the competition constantly evolving and GM's own sister divisions getting hot new products like Saturn's Astra, it doesn't seem like a mere three years have gone by. Its not arguable that the current Cobalt brought Chevrolet into a level playing field in the crowded small compact market, but aside from the supercharged SS coupe, the rest of the line seems little more than competent. Let's change that. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to create the next generation of Chevrolet small car. Remember that the Cobalt should remain tidy in exterior dimensions, but…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #11! The current GMT-355 compact pickup trucks are solid trucks without question. In spirit, they're a natural follow on to the S-series trucks. Welcome to Sketch Competition #10! Its a bird, its a plane, its...a supercar! Chevrolet's Corvette in stock form is one helluva car. In Z06 trim, its a monster. In forthcoming Blue Devil garb, it portends to be a true beast. Though it will indeed be super in our hearts, the most tuned-out Corvette is still a Corvette. Something truly unique is need to be GM's authentic supercar, one that bears no structural relation to anything else in the stable. Something captivating, enrapturing, and able to turn a middle-aged man into a wide-eyed child in under two seconds. Welcome to Sketch Competition #9! As of late, there have been many rumors concerning what we'll call B-Series Cadillacs, namely the BLS and BRX. While the future of an American BLS is up in the air, the presence of a smaller, sub-SRX crossover carrying the BRX nameplate is more certain. Word has it that it will share some subcomponants with the next-generation Theta VUE and Equinox, but beyond that, who knows...? Well, maybe you do. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design Cadillac's BRX crossover. I thought of an idea for a future sketch competition, and figured it'd be more useful to have an overall thread for people to share ideas than to just share mine. I think there could be a number of competitions based on the GM fuel cell "skateboard" concept. For example, "Show us your ideas for a full size sedan based on the skateboard chassis, keeping in mind the extra freedom of no engine compartment, but the need for crashworthiness..." More could be done for other vehicle classes, as well. Probably do them spread out so it doesn't get too dull. So, what are your ideas for future sketch competitions?

I was thinking that eventually GMC will come out with a car, just like all the import companies have come out with full size pickups and caddy came out the truck awhile back. I was thinking why not? and that it would make a great competition, because there's nothing to go by because there's never been a car made by GMC. GM yes of course lol.

Welcome to Sketch Competition #8! In 1977, carburators blended the fuel-air mixture in our engines, CB radios were all the rage, and airbags were merely experimental. Much has changed in the 30 years since that time. Today, satellite-based GPS systems tell us which roads to take, electronic stability control systems keep us firmly planted on that road, and in-car entertainment systems take us their in comfort. Who could've imagined these now-commonplace features thirty years ago? Automobile designers. As automobile enthusiasts, you see just how far 100, 50, 25, even 10 years has taken us in the continued evolution of the car. Your task, should you choose to accept it, …

Welcome to Sketch Competition #7! General Motors' Buick division stunned us in early 2000 when it showcased the LaCrosse concept car. Named for the athletic sport and its ability to cross the boundaries between sedan and utility, the stunning deep crimson concept left us eyes agap at Buick elegance reborn - a large chromed grille, elegant lines, full-width taillamps, ventiports, and a sweapspear. Buick stunned us again in 2004 with the production LaCrosse. Arguably an all-together competant automobile, it also featured a chromed grille and respectably elegant lines, but many feel much was lost in the translation. Perhaps it was Buick's faux pas to name the car after the…

Welcome to Sketch Competition #5! If one brand of vehicle symbolizes American opulence and culture, it’s Cadillac. And of all the bodystyles automobiles come in today, the one that best represents individualism and freedom is the two-door coupe. Two-door Cadillac coupe – what better match is there? In fact, some of the most legendary Cadillac models have been coupes, from the fin-bedecked Coupe DeVille of the late 1950s to the Eldorado line. Today, the two-door market has shrunk incredibly and the segment once presided over by luxurious ‘personal coupes’ has been annexed and divided up by compact sports cars, hatchbacks, and ridiculously expensive exotics. Where is the …

Welcome to Sketch Competition #5! Small cars have always been part of the American automotive landscape, though traditionally more crabgrass than St. Augustine; yeah, its green and it fills up your lawn, but it still looks cheap and it sucks. Apply the same school of thought to a Tercel or Civic or Escort. But the recent years have shown that smaller cars can attain a certain level of appeal and while the MINI Cooper is the poster child for this new movement, evidence can been seen elsewhere. Even entrants like the Mazda3, Nissan Versa, and Dodge Caliber whose precedessors were anything but appealing are reborn with navigation, traction and stability control, and unique…

With the car-based family utility segement entering a second rennaisance, now is the time for our GM to shine. Its your task to come up with a vehicle to not just compete in but perhaps redefine the segment. There are no design requirements, but use some common sense - a swoopy coupe won't cut it here. Keep in mind what makes minivans popular (utility) and why crossovers are desirable (design) and draw up something great with as many/few doors, as tall/low, long/short as you think is right. …

Well, I've finally gotten around to starting a new comp, and I've decided to go with a RWD Pontiac sedan. This would be like a RWD Grand Prix or the replacement for that vehicle, something about the G6 that would take on the Charger Artists' entries should consist of at least two the following: 3/4 front view, 3/4 view rear view, and interior view. I've yet to make a deadline, but figure about a month and it could be extended depending on if people need more time.

Other views are optional. -You must make your entry whatever that car was when it was being built. (An exmple would be that th…
