Buick

Founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, Buick is one of America’s oldest automobile brands and the oldest active division of General Motors (GM). Known for pioneering innovations like the overhead valve engine, Buick became a symbol of affordable luxury throughout the 20th century. It played a key role in GM’s growth and today positions itself between Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering premium vehicles in both the U.S. and China—its largest market.

  2. China will be getting a fuel-sipping version of the new LaCrosse in the near future. The automaker revealed the LaCrosse Hybrid at an event yesterday in Shanghai. The hybrid system is comprised of a 1.8L SIDI four-cylinder, electric variable transmission, and a 1.5 KwH lithium-ion battery. Buick is keeping quiet on performance specs, but does say the model will reach 62 miles per hour in 8.9 seconds and return 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers (about 50 MPG). Compared to the last-generation LaCrosse eAssist, the new LaCrosse Hybrid is 35 percent more efficient. Other fuel saving tricks include grille shutters, electronic climate control compressor, and a thermal energ…

  3. Jamie LaReau Automotive News August 25, 2008 - 12:01 am ET At Buick, it's nearly all about China — the brand's biggest market. Buick's redesigned mid-sized car will be sold here and in China. A small sedan created for China may be sold here. A stylish, rear-wheel-drive sedan went on sale last year in China and was penciled in for the United States. But GM's financial plight scuttled the U.S. plan for the rwd sedan, as well as production plans for a sharp-looking coupe concept that debuted last year at the Shanghai auto show. Small car: General Motors is likely to bring a redesigned compact sedan to the United States for the 2012 model year, a front-wheel-driv…

  7. The 2019 Buick Envision has an omission that no other Buick model has at this moment, the lack of the 'Buick' name on the back. At the time, we thought this wasn't a big deal. Maybe someone at GM forgot to put the name badge on the Envision. But this is a bigger deal than we first thought. Late last week, GM Authority learned from brand reps that Envision will be the first Buick model to drop the name badge. Other Buick models will follow in the 2019 model year. Since then, Automotive News has gotten confirmation about this decision. "It was a small running change that we didn't view as especially worth announcing to the world, but I've been pretty amazed by the…

The HVAC/stereo controls look particularly downmarket. And outside, from the side, it looks like a flattened asymmetrical bell. Still, nice to see progress. Most of the materials look fine. And the anthracite wheels look great, though they don't fit the car's body. Unlike the Lucerne, the DTS doesn't look like it's floating, even with the 17" wheels.

That's an 'up-level edition" . . . It will include new front-end treatments, such as a waterfall grille, and a V-8 engine . . . pricing has not been set." "Buick starts production on the Enclave crossover this fall and likely will start production on the super LaCrosse at that time . . . " " . . . But there is something else waiting in the wings. This week, The Detroit News learned that Buick will have a big premiere at the event. Officials at Buick were keeping their lips shut as to what this may be. “We have a very special program, and we had a surprise last year, so we’ll see if we can do something this year as well,” Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president of Buick. However, Bloomberg may have learned what the surprise is. A source says the other vehicle will be a sporty coupe concep…

GM today seems to agree as they have filed to patent the name Electra in both Canada and the US. 22. Another anonymous "people familiar with the plans said" story. So take it for what it is. If true, GM is pathetically uncured of its own stupidity. They've learned nothing about brand management and don't see that proliferating the same basic vehicle across more than 2 makes hurts all the brands. So now, we'll have a Chevy Equinox, Cadillac SRX, GMC Terrain and now Buick "Vue." Two of these vehicles would be sold at the same dealers! If 4 brands is so great maybe 10 would be better. What's the point? The answer can't be "extra sales" because 2-brand Toyota is kicking 8-brand GM's tail. The Toyota/Honda/Nissan 2-brand brand model has won. Why is GM so obtuse? …

According to Jan. 15, 2008 news reports, "Potential additions include a sedan shorter than the Buick LaCrosse, a crossover sport-utility vehicle more compact than the GMC Acadia and a Pontiac small car," said Jim Bunnell, general manager for the division that includes the three brands. The U.S. regulations "have thrown everything on its head," Bunnell said. "We most likely will need smaller market entries to get in line." The Buick brand filled a crucial niche for the auto giant, attracting well-heeled consumers who wanted more than an Oldsmobile but weren't comfortable with the flash of a Cadillac. Peter DeLorenzo of autoextremist.com, for one, says, "Buick can absolutely capture a younger, more contemporary audience. They'll do it by unleashing a series of sensational looking, eye-catching designs combined with edgy image advertising that will delete any previous hoary notions of Buick”. I think this place is a gold mine for buick w-bodys because people know they are built right there. I think this place must have been a gold mine for years. I was very surprised today as I spent a lot of time there, and a trend that I noticed was Older people were driving LeSabres, Regals and some old people in Allures. But the thing that surprised me was that most of the people in Century's weer younger people, and some of the people in Allure's were younger. Now I really think this place has been one of gm's gold mines. Anyone ever been…

  68. The Buick lineup is currently has two crossover, the small Encore and the large Enclave. There's a large gap for midsize crossover to fill that gap and Buick appears to being doing just that. Well for China at least. Buick has revealed a teaser for the upcoming Envision Crossover lwhich happens to be cloaked and parked in between the Encore and Enclave. The brand says the model was inspired by the Envision concept and will feature "dynamic and assertive styling." The Envision Crossover will debut sometime later this year in China. No word if this model will go to the U.S. or not. Source: Buick William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. He can be reached a…

Car and Driver has done a bit more digging and was able to pull some more details on the 2017 Envision. We know that the base Envision will carry a sticker price of $34,990 (includes destination). From there, the prices increase to $36,975 for the Preferred and $38,645 for the Essence. All three trims feature the same 2.5L four-cylinder with 197 horsepower and 192 pound-feet. Buick is bridging the generation gap, good news, according to Steve Purdy of the Auto Channel. Here's an especially nice portion of his review: "Buick general manager, Steve Shannon, reports a 'great start' since introduction last October with Lucerne accounting for 27% of large-car sales in the fourth quarter of last year and segment leading sales in December as well. 'We’re very pleased at how Lucerne is performing out of the gate,' he said. Lucerne has also won accolades from USA Today, The Detroit News and Kiplinger’s."

The ongoing popularity of the Excelle lower-medium sedan, Shanghai GM’s best-selling vehicle, and GL8 executive wagon family propelled Buick sales to 145,786 units, which was an increase of 38.7 percent on a year-on-year basis. Buick here in America is a brand of declining sales, lackluster product (excluding Enclave) and an aging customer base. Buick China: A thriving, growing brand with a wide audience and successful, competent product. Many have legitimately complained about the lack of such support and backing in the form excellent product being offered here in the USA. This is all about to change. Enclave is the start of great things for the Buick brand. GM hasn’t given up; Buick is a very important part of the new GM going forward. This key fob excellently demonstrates what GM intends to take Buick; this type of elegance and luxury will become the norm at Buick as it moves upmarket. …

I got a response back from Buick about the Velite, saying it was "still under consideration." I also read that Steve Shannon owns a 1961 Alfa Romeo, so I guess he's a convertible guy. Maybe this means he'd like to have the Velite built so he can drive a convertible from his own company.

Maybe we’ll finally get some respect for Buick with the 2006 Lucerne. It has been getting great reviews from the press (and so has its sister, the DTS) and now Buick is killing the Dream Up campaign and focusing on “Precision”. Three new TV ads will debut with the new “Beyond Precision” tagline focusing on precise panel gaps, heated wiper fluid, and “Mr. Aachen Head” a device that Buick uses to capture interior noise levels. Thanks for waking up GM. The problem is the first commercial I saw for the Lucerne was at the end of a “Red Tag Event” spot, even though the new Buick isn’t included in the sale. -Walt Keegan FROM GM: Mr. Aachen Head (and Tom Bosley? Has changing the name from Lesabre to Lucerne improved sales? And Lucerne also replaces Park Avenue. Ditto to Lacrosse replacing Century and Regal. Could we say that familiar nameplates require less money marketing the product? How about following the Taurus and change back to old beloved nameplates? Lacrosse replacement becomes Century. Lucerne (goofy French sounding name) becomes LeSabre.

It would seem that GM is hellbent on doing something with Buick in NA, so the question becomes what, exactly, should Buick be? To my mind, Buick should be elegant, high style, high comfort, high quality luxury without the burden of a performance orientation that Cadillac has to maintain. Im other words, Buick should be luxury and style without compromise. That's not to say that Buicks should not perform at a high level, just that no compromises of luxury or style be made on behalf of that performance. Cadillac has to toe that line, Buick should be free not to. Discuss.

I got this from another website: Can any dealers please confirm? LaCrosse Super WAS at the dealer meeting in Vegas last weekend. It DID look like the China version (similar, imagine with oval grill like lucerne). It IS due out next summer, only in the CXS version which will come with the same V8 as the Impala SS. The 2008 CXL and CX *should* have the new front end as well, making the LaCrosse look more like the Lucerne.

Think about it. Younger people (under 30) purchasing new Buicks and spending more money customizing them. This makes me especially anxious to see how these eleven SEMA Lucernes will look. Imagine if Buick could reinforce their image as purveyors of old-school iron scrappers, at least when it comes to customization. I don't think that would be a bad thing at all.

  88. In mid-June, GM will change from its present TV message to promoting Buick, according to David Welch and David Kiley in Business Week. "The primary focus is on hooking younger buyers who have zero loyalty to GM vehicles. Buick, while popular in China, has come to be considered a fogy brand at home (average buyer age: 66). Americans love a makeover, so that is the theme Buick has latched on to. One ad has a plastic surgery spin with the catch line: 'Nip. Tuck. Weld.' To reel in younger buyers, ads for Buick's curvy new LaCrosse sedan will feature its array of Lexus-caliber gadgetry, including a hard drive for music, a system that alerts drivers if someone is in their bli…

You can now build a Lucerne Super on CARS, but the CXS has disappeared. It also looks like they rebundled some of the option packages as well on Lucerne.
