William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 28, 2013 Once upon a time, the Volvo lineup had three compact cars; the C30 hatchback, S40 sedan, and V50 wagon. All three went off to the great parking lot in the sky and the V40 hatchback took their place. There was one problem, because of the poor sales of those three models in the U.S., Volvo decided not to sell the V40. Volvo executives and dealers in the U.S. want to see a change in that decision. "The V40 is a great small vehicle, and we would love to have it here. It is not currently in our plan but that does not stop me. I am constantly talking about making that a reality," said Tassos Panas, head of mar…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 7, 2013 Volvo is in the middle of a massive product offensive. With their entire lineup being refreshed and the new V60 coming in 2014, you would think Volvo is coming close to finishing. Not so says Automobile Magazine. They’re reporting that Volvo has more to come in the next few years. We’ll begin with what we know. Next year, Volvo will introduce the brand new XC90 crossover. The new XC90 will also debut Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) that will underpin a majority of Volvo vehicles and use a range of three and four-cylinder engines. Automobile reports the next model to get SPA will be S80 and V70…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 24, 2013 Since Volvo was bought by Chinese automaker Geely back in 2010, talk emerged that Volvo was considering a flagship. This would be further fueled by comments from Geely Chairman Li Shufu who said Volvo should compete directly with BMW, Mercedes and Audi; and the introduction of two concept vehicles, the Concept Universe and Concept You. Volvo's CEO at the time, Stefan Jacoby said a luxury sedan doesn't fit the image of the brand. Jacoby's sucessor agrees. "We don't have any ambitions to go into a segment where we would compete with vehicles that have V-8 or V-12 engines. We don't believe it would fit our…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 11, 2013 Volvo is reconsidering a earlier decision on not selling the V60 Wagon in the U.S. to help bolster Volvo's somewhat small lineup. When Volvo launched the V60 in Europe two years ago, the decision was made not sell it in the U.S. due to a lack of demand for wagon models. But since that time, Volvo's lineup has decreased from ten to six models. That will soon be down to five when the C70 bids adieu later this year. This leaves Volvo dealers in the U.S. in a tough spot since there isn't any new products coming around the bend until 2015, the year of the new XC90. Doug Speck, Volvo's global head of marketi…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 7, 2013 Volvo announced today that overall worldwide sales dropped 6.1% and that 2013 could be a difficult year for the brand. “Competition in the car industry will most likely continue to be as fierce as in 2012 as manufacturers will seek to capture volumes and market shares in a market where the economic situation will remain unstable. 2013 is therefore expected to be a challenging year in terms of margins and growth,” the company said. Volvo delivered 421,951 vehicles in 2012, marking a 6.1% decrease when compared to 2011. The markets which hurt Volvo the hardest were Sweden where sales dropped 11.2% (51,8…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 15, 2012 Last month, Polestar unveiled the 508 HP Volvo S60 Polestar performance concept. At the time, Polestar built one for "one specific client." But, there could be more 508 HP S60s on the road. Autocar talked with the managing director of Volvo UK, Nick Connor. Connor said that the company is “in serious discussion with Polestar to try and make the S60 a reality.” Connor goes onto say if the S60 Polestar is given the greenlight, the vehicle would be built in limited numbers and would be a marketing exercise. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 25, 2012 Volvo looks to joining its compatriots in Germany, South Korea, and Japan with building vehicles in North America. In a interview with Bloomberg, Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said they're looking for a partner to manufacture cars in North America. "In the medium term, five to six years, we need to find a proper solution in North America. Building a plant ourselves is maybe more unlikely. I’m looking for a partner that could help us utilize a North American plant," As to who, Jacoby said they are open to all manufacturers, even Fiat. "Fiat is obviously one of the alternatives. If you speak to Marchionne, just t…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 18, 2012 A few weeks ago, we reported on rumors of a hotted-up S60 being worked on by Volvo and its performance partner, Polestar. The S60 would use a tuned V8 engine from the XC90 and S80, producing 400 HP and going through an AWD system. Now, Polestar has unveiled the Volvo S60 Polestar performance concept. Before you ask, we're not sure if this is the car captured in the spy shots or not. But nevertheless, this is an impressive vehicle. The S60 Polestar performance concept comes equipped with a highly modified turbocharged 3.0L inline-six producing an eyewatering 508 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque. That give…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 5, 2012 Volvo appears to have their heart set on a luxury coupe, or that is what Inside Line is reporting. Sources inside Volvo say the company is considering a coupe and convertible that will sit above the current C70. The C90 would compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe and convertible. If given the green light, the C90 will use Volvo's new Scalable Platform Architecture that will underpin the XC90 and other vehicles. Power will come from a range of four-cylinder gas, diesel engines, and a plug-in hybrid model. Source: Inside Line View full article

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 1, 2012 Its hard to believe that the current Volvo XC90 will be around 11 years old when the next XC90 will come out. But according to Inside Line, that is what will happen. The new XC90 isn't due out till 2014 at the earliest, but it will bring forth a platform that will underpin many of Volvo's future products. Called Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), this platform will underpin the next generation S60, V70, XC60 and S80. As for power, the XC90 will exclusively use four-cylinder power only. The four-cylinder engines will be part of the Volvo Environmental Architecture engine family and come in gas and dies…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 28, 2012 Volvo's marketing campaign for the new S60 is going down a dark route. Instead of talking about how safe it is, Volvo is talking about how sporty and "Naughty" the S60 is. And it appears Volvo is upping the naughty a bit, if a report and some spy shots come to fruition. Sweden’s Tekniken Svarld reports that Volvo and performance partner, Polestar are working together to build high performance S60. Rumor points to a Yamaha sourced V8 that Volvo uses in the XC90 SUV and S80 flagship. The V8 has been tuned to somewhere in the range of 400 HP. Tekniken Svarld goes onto say that the S60 could get a sequential…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 17, 2012 What is the lowest cylinder engine that you can buy in a Volvo currently? If you said four, you would be wrong. Volvo hasn't sold a four-cylinder model since 2004. But that will be changing next year. Automotive News has found out that come 2013, Volvo will offer a 2.0L four-cylinder in the front-wheel-drive versions of the S60 and S80 sedans, the XC60 crossover and the XC70 wagon. The engine is part of Volvo's new Environmental Architecture family of four-cylinder engines. The family will replace all of the automaker's five- and six-cylinder engines. "The whole reason to do this is high fuel efficienc…

G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com Thursday, 23rd February, 2012 It isn’t easy for automakers to keep their upcoming models under wraps these days. While manufacturers would rather build our interest up for a new car with a slow trickle of teaser images until the wraps are pulled back, others would rather just release what few complete pieces of information they can get their hands on as soon as possible by whatever means necessary. So it isn’t much of a surprise Volvo’s new V40 five-door hatch has leaked out ahead of its reveal at the approaching Geneva Auto Show. Although there isn’t any official information or specifications, it’s safe to assume the V40 w…

Volvo Brings Back A Wagon With A Dash Of Hybrid William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 17, 2011 Previously if you wanted a wagon from Volvo, you could choose between the small V50, the large V70, and the all weather XC70. However due to poor sales and people heading towards to crossovers, Volvo has cut their wagon lineup to the XC70 only. Now, Volvo is sending over a new wagon with an added feature. The V60 Plug-In hybrid will be making it's way to the US sometime in 2012. The US version of the V60 hybrid will use a gas engine instead of a diesel engine for the rest of the world. Volvo hasn't released mileage figures of the gas ver…

Volvo Denies Rumors Of Buying Saab William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 22, 2011 Volvo is denying a report from Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf about buying Saab. De Telegraff said in an article that the Swedish Goverment was in talks with Chinese owned Volvo about possibly putting in a bid to buy Saab. The move would give the Swedish government greater assurance that a loan from the European Investment Bank would be granted for Saab and a guarantee from Sweden that the loan would be paid back. Volvo Cars spokesman Per-Ake Froberg said about the report, "No such talks have been going on and no such talks are scheduled." Saab has been …

SWEDISH GOVERNMENT TO DECIDE ON VOLVO LOAN GUARANTEE TODAY By Mark Kleis A little over three months ago Leftlane reported that Volvo was seeking a loan from the European Investment Bank total of 600 million euros ($780 million) in order to fund the development of more environmentally friendly vehicles. Today, it is expected that the Swedish government will report on whether or not they will guarantee the EIB loans, according to Dow Jones. Last week the loan itself was given approval by the European Union Commission – pending a guarantee by the Swedish government. Talks concerning this load pre-date the sale of Volvo to Chinese automaker Geely, which caused a delay in …

VOLVO AMPS UP PRE-OWNED PROGRAM BY OFFERING FREE MAINTENANCE By Andrew Ganz Certified pre-owned programs have helped automakers make used car sales more profitable by offering buyers extended warranties, multi-point inspections and other perks, but Volvo is raising the bar another level. The automaker’s new Protection Plus+ Program will now cover a certified pre-owned Volvo’s factory scheduled maintenance for six years or 100,000 miles from the vehicle’s original purchase or in-service date. The program already included a six-year, 100,000-mile $0 deductible bumper-to-bumper warranty extension and on-call roadside assistance. The program doesn’t have an end date, so i…

Don’t ban mobile phones in cars: Volvo Barry Park December 8, 2010 A Swedish safety expert says stopping mobile phone use in cars isn’t the right move. A leading international safety expert has criticised calls to ban mobile phones from cars as unnecessary. Thomas Broberg, a senior safety adviser with Swedish car maker Volvo, says the suggestion that Australia consider introducing a national ban on mobile phone use in cars would not be something his company — renowned for its focus on safety — would support. The Australian Transport Council has released a draft discussion paper looking at the steps it thinks Australia could take to cut its road toll by 30 per cent …

The recall affects certain 2009, 2010 and 2011 model year S40, S60 and V50 vehicles, as well as some 2010 and 2011 model year XC60 crossovers.
