Volvo ponders adding 2 small vehicles By DIANA T. KURYLKO, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS The redesigned Volvo S60 targets luxury import sedans. Among the first product moves that Volvo is considering as it adapts to new management is the addition of a small sedan that targets BMW's 1 series and a compact crossover to go up against the BMW X1. The sedan would be smaller than the S40, said Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. The S40 will be phased out in the next two years because it is regarded as too close in size to the redesigned S60 sedan. "We need enough gap in size to justify small and large vehicles," Speck said at the press launch of Volvo's new-generation S60. …

2011 Volvo S60: Standout Design Keeping Volvo Fresh By Bengt Halvorson Deputy Editor September 27th, 2010 346 Views comment now! The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 is certainly much more charismatic than the car it replaces—with a sportier driving feel and even some track cred, yet more comfort than most other sport sedans. While the S60's driving personality—and safety, of course—is part of its appeal, it's also uber-stylish. And with safety increasingly emphasized across the market, Volvo is relying more on standout Scandinavian design to stay relevant. Volvo took a completely different route with the S60, especially inside, compared to most compact or mid-size luxury s…

Video: Volvo suffers another auto-stop safety system failure in public fashion by Chris Paukert (RSS feed) on Sep 27th 2010 at 3:00PM Volvo's new Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is under scrutiny after a series of demonstrations for journalists in Australia went awry in rather spectacular fashion. During the presentation, an inflatable test dummy was mowed down after the system failed to detect its presence in time to stop. This, despite the fact that the technology was showcased under controlled conditions. The optional hardware, which debuts on the 2011 S60 and V60 wagon, utilizes both radar and camera technology to avoid or mitigate an accident with a pedes…

VOLVO TESTING BODY PANELS THAT DOUBLE AS A BATTERY By Mark Kleis Imagine if the hundreds of extra pounds added to the weight of hybrid vehicles from the added batteries could be completely removed by instead taking a part of the car that is already necessary and adding a second function to those existing pieces. Then imagine making those pieces even lighter than the less functional pieces they replaced. Volvo and several European organizations did exactly that. Volvo is currently the sole automaker involved in a an advanced study that is looking into special composites that are based in carbon fiber that allow for the composite to retain and discharge an electrical c…

Tested: Industry-First Pedestrian Detection In 2011 Volvo S60 By Bengt Halvorson Deputy Editor September 24th, 2010 If you've ever had a minor fender-bender because you looked down at the wrong moment, dialed your phone, or took a sip of coffee, pay attention to this: What if it had been a pedestrian, or a bicyclist? The 2011 Volvo S60 comes with a world-first system that could potentially eliminate the possibility of those kinds of tragic mishaps. Volvo says that in the U.S., about 11 percent, or 4,700, of all traffic fatalities are pedestrians. In Europe it's about 14 percent, and in China 26 percent. The system identifies pedestrians in the road ahead and then, …

Volvo of North America's Vice President of Public Affairs, Geno Effler confirmed the debut Thursday during a media Q&A session at this week's U.S. launch of the S60 in Portland, Oregon. Volvo S60 And V60 R-Design R-Underwhelming The 2011 Volvo S60 and V60 Sportswagon get the R-Design treatment — not to be confused with the regular "R treatment" or anything that adds substantial performance. Their Chinese overlords are happy enough with suspension tweaks and aesthetic unimprovements. With the new S60, Volvo's somehow created a design as distinct as it is beige. The new R-Design version pushes the car barely into the third dimension of unsightly with a mere redesign of the nose. Perhaps it's the photo, but flat dark silver plasticky inserts weren't what was missing. The rear on the V60 fairs a little better with a standard-looking diffuser and twin tailp…

Li Shufu. The chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group says that he plans to build as many as three new plants in China and eventually make - and sell - 300,000 Volvo vehicles a year there, according to the Wall Street Journal. Volvo sold 335,000 cars total around the world including just over 24,000 vehicles in China in 2009. Uh, let's review, shall we? Volvo has no brand image in China, like zero. Not only that, but Volvo as a company is in deep trouble. Now all of this is supposed to come good by 2015 or so just because they're going to throw money at it?. How about oh hell no?

GEELY CONSIDERING THREE CHINESE VOLVO PLANTS By Andrew Ganz Shortly before acquiring Swedish automaker Volvo from Ford last month, Geely announced that its expansion plans for Volvo would include an assembly plant in China primarily to serve the world's fastest growing market. Now, the automaker says that it might build as many as three Volvo assembly plants in China. No firm decision has been made, however, as Volvo's board of directors and the Chinese government both need to approve additional assembly plants in China. In addition, Geely chairman Li Shufu says that there is no great sense of urgency in adding more plant capacity yet. "It takes time," Li told Reuters…

Future products: Geely must retool Volvo plans By DIANA T. KURYLKO, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS Volvo's only scheduled unveiling in the States in the next few years is the S60 sedan, which goes on sale in September. For example, all of Volvo's current range except the 9-year-old XC90 crossover makes use of Ford vehicles and components. The XC90 is based on Volvo's P2 platform and was developed before Ford ownership. But small cars--the S40, V50, S70 and C30--use the C1 platform, engineered by Ford, Mazda and Volvo. The S60/XC60, XC70 and S80 use Ford's EUCD large-car platform. Volvo's 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine was developed with Land Rover when both were owned by Ford.…

Volvo to challenge BMW, Mercedes, Audi with V60 wagon Automotive News -- August 30, 2010 - 11:06 am ET VERONA, Italy (Bloomberg) -- Volvo plans to challenge BMW AG, Audi and Mercedes-Benz with its new V60 station wagon in Europe. Volvo forecasts annual sales of 50,000 of the V60, which goes on sale later this year, Tomas Ahlborg, the model's project chief, said in an interview in Verona, Italy, where the carmaker is holding test drives. Volvo says Chinese-made cars will stay in China 04:26 PM Volvo is putting the kibosh on Drive On's report over the weekend that speculated that Chinese-made Volvos might find their way to the U.S. Just because Volvo is now owned by Chinese automaker Geely and will be made in their plants in China doesn't mean that Americans will get anything but European-made Volvos. In China, Volvo sells the S40 and long-wheelbase S80. From Volvo's Dan Johnston: Right off the top, below is what (Geely boss) Li Shufu has been saying to media and recently sent to all employees. We doubt that his making this kind of public statement is rescindable in the future: Dear employees, We can…

Would you buy a Volvo made in China? 06:00 AM Volvo has long been known for Swedish quality and class-leading safety. So now that it's owned by China's Geely Holding Group, will the brand still be considered premium if Volvos are made in China? Geely is considering converting a new plant in southwest China to make Volvos, the Wall Street Journal reports. It also may construct another Volvo plant, possibly near Shanghai. That didn't take long. Geely recently closed the deal to buy Volvo from Ford Motor. Geely management has made it clear that it has to find ways to slash Volvo's costs. And it unclear whether any of a Chinese plant's output would make their way to the U…

VOLVO TO BUILD “MORE EMOTIONAL” CARS, CEO SAYS By Andrew Ganz Speaking to the media at his first press conference since becoming Volvo’s chief, new CEO Stefan Jacoby said that he wants the Swedish automaker to begin producing more evocative vehicles. “Volvo stands for safety, solidity and reliability but the emotional positioning of the brand is not sharp enough. Volvo needs to find a Swedish-based, unique positioning,” Jacoby said. Volvo has long attempted to shake its conservative image – especially with its latest S60 sedan, which is being marketed as a “naughty Volvo” in many countries. Jacoby arrived at Volvo earlier this month after giving up the top position a…

Volvo C30 to get special edition with a hint of citrus? by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Aug 18th 2010 at 10:29AM Once again an automaker is turning to you, The American Car Buyer, to find out what you want. This time, it's Volvo wondering what America's consumer audience thinks of a special edition C30 that would combine metallic Orange Flame paint and 17-inch wheels outside with two-tone seats in T-Tec and orange cloth, Sirius Satellite, an an upgraded audio system inside. If you answered, "Yes, I like the sound of that," Volvo wants to know if an automatic, climate control and bi-xenons would also be on your list. The Orange Metallic paint is a current option on U.S…

Volvo eyes China, partnerships to offset small size Paul McVeigh Automotive News Europe -- August 18, 2010 13:31 CET Volvo will build emotional cars in the future and may look to cooperate with rivals to gain economies of scale, new CEO Stefan Jacoby said. Volvo creates a 'team' to handle advertising Swedish brand's creative headquarters will be in Amsterdam Rupal Parekh Advertising Age -- August 13, 2010 06:01 CET NEW YORK -- Two weeks after its ownership changed hands from U.S. car giant Ford to Chinese powerhouse Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, Volvo is restructuring its ad agency relationships to mimic what other global auto manufacturers have: a dedicated unit to serve its marketing needs. As much as such structures are continuing to generate interest among car makers, their names are hardly becoming more creative. Ford has Team Detroit, Lexus has Team One, Mazda has Team Mazda, and now Volvo has -- you guessed it…

Report: Volvo's new chairman wants 7-Series, S-Class rival by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Aug 4th 2010 at 1:31PM Geely isn't wasting any time in shaping up its newest acquisition's product line. The Chinese automaker officially completed its deal to purchase Volvo from Ford earlier this week, and already the Swedish brand's new chairman is making noises about a new large luxury sedan to go toe to toe with the likes of the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Li Shufu, Volvo chairman and co-chair of Geely, said that the brand already competes with luxury German carmakers in most markets, but lacks all of the hardware to do so effectively. To remedy the problem, Li wants…
