William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 11, 2012 Yesterday, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne led a day-long product preview in Las Vegas for Chrysler and Fiat dealers. The preview showed products from Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Fiat, and Jeep. According to Reuters, Alfa Romeo showed two new models to dealers. Most likely, one of those models was the 4C coupe. The other one could have been a crossover or the new Giulia. Chrysler showed the 100 Subcompact and the new 200. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Chrysler is spending $2 billion on the next 200, with the expectation to double sales. The new 200 will come with a nine-speed automatic trans…

Yesterday, I had to do an administrative errand that involved some important paperwork and traveling between Northern California and Northern Nevada. So, I went on-line and rented an ECONOMY car from one of the majors. Upon arriving at the lot, there were no $ 18.99 economy cars, so I knew an upgrade was in order for the same price. The people in front of me were given a Jeep but I wanted something with an actual trunk, so the lady gave me a base model Chrysler 300. Now, I've probably posted before that I am quite disenchanted with the styling of most Chrysler products...and the 300 is no exception. I don't like the grille, the greenhouse and the squatty proportion…

Jeremy Clarkson Review: Chrysler Sebring Cabriolet 2.7 V6 From The Sunday Times - October 5, 2008 Link to Article Many people imagine when they rent a convertible in America that they’ll be thumping down Highway 1 under a blazing sky in a throbbing Corvette or an evocative Mustang. Yum yum, they think. Freedom. Sunshine. A V8 bass line. Engineer boots, leather jackets and tight blue jeans. The American dream. Sadly, however, most tourists end up with a Chrysler Sebring convertible, which is almost certainly the worst car in the entire world. My journey in this automotive horror story began in Wendover. Famous for being a base used by the Enola Gay back in 19…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 13, 2012 Chrysler hasn't been the strongest proponent of electric vehicles since it has been together with Fiat. "You're not looking at a guy who's as scared as the rest of them. I'm not scared, I just won't do it. I just will not do it. I think we're smoking illegal materials if we think we're going to make those [profitably]," said Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne in a interview with Automobile Magazine back in July. This might be an odd thing to say since Fiat is working on a 500 EV that will go into production later this year. However, Marchionne has been on record saying the 500 EV will lose money and is …

Chrysler puts '06 vehicles in used lots Automaker allows dealers to add deep discounts in effort to unload cars and trucks Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News In a last-ditch effort to unload 2006 cars and trucks, Chrysler allowed its dealers to designate the new vehicles as "loaners" for as little as one day before selling them as used for steep discounts. The unusual sales tactic came at the end of May as the Auburn Hills-based division of DaimlerChrysler AG was trying to finish the month on a strong note. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers can use new vehicles as loaners for test-drives or for customers who need a car while theirs is in service. In the past, dealers …

Google and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles made waves earlier this year when it was announced the two would build 100 autonomous prototypes based on the all new Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. Now the two could be working together on a ride-sharing service using autonomous vehicles. Bloomberg has learned from sources that Google will deploy a semi-autonomous vehicle, most likely the Pacifica possibly towards the end of 2017 for this new service. The sources go on to say that Google will need more than 100 vehicles that FCA agreed to in their original deal. This comes on the heels of Google's announcement today that it will be spinning off their autonomous vehicle project int…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 24, 2012 Chrysler/Fiat has some big plans coming up within the next few years. Starting in 2013, Chrysler will introduce new midsize sedans to replace the 200 and Dodge Avenger. The new sedans will be based on the Dodge Dart's platform. Following along will be the replacements for the Jeep Compass and Liberty, which will also be based on the Dart's platform. Despite using a compact car architecture, Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said, ”It’s going to be a trail-rated, full-blooded Jeep that has its origins in the architecture of a sports car.” Chrysler is also considering a premium compact hatchback in …

Chrysler considering dropping Mopar, Chrysler Transport Link to Original Article @ LeftLaneNews In an effort to get Chrysler's financial situation on the right track, the automaker has proposed dropping non-core assets in recent United Auto Worker contract talks. Chrysler has proposed shutting down or selling its high-performance parts division, Mopar, as well as Chrysler Transport, the division responsible for managing deliveries of supplies to Chrysler plants. According to Automotive News, the UAW opposes the divestments as Mopar and Chrysler Transport employ about 1,300 workers. CNN Story Jeep unveils two compact SUVs Though they are officially "concept" vehicles, the Patriot and Compass could see production soon. September 12, 2005: 12:54 PM EDT NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Jeep unveiled two concept vehicles at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany today that, a company executive said, hint at a worldwide portfolio expansion for the off-road brand. While both vehicles are relatively compact, with roughly 104-inch wheelbases, they offer distinct personalities. The Jeep Patriot has the tough, off-road appearance for which Jeep is known. The Jeep Compass concept has a softer, more wagon-like look. The company boasts of the high fuel-e…

Another Recall for the Grand Cherokee Chrysler is recalling 131,000 2000-2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees because of a defective engine fan. The blades on the cooling fan may fly off and injure anyone near. This is the second Grand Cherokee recall this week. On Monday, a recall for 111,600 2003-2004 GC's was issued because the front seats may catch fire. Couple that with the call for an investigation into Grand Cherokees for sudden acceleration issues and it seems like this is a pretty bad week for Jeep and their Grand Cherokee buyers. 2011 Chrysler Lineup Impressions Saturday I finally got around to checking out some of the new metal. Stopped by Salvadore Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep in Gardner. It was late in teh afternoon so the photos kinda suck due to lack of daylight, but it is what it is. First up is the Chrysler 200. In the flesh you can still see its Sebring routes, but its amazing what a nose job and a nice butt will do for the car. There's some nice detailing on the exterior, like how the chrome trim on the rear fascia mimics the grill trim. I really like the LED piping on in headlights, and the detailing of the tail lights. Inside, the interior is much improved. Gone is the cheap gray, p…

Today in Auburn Hills, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles presented their five-year plan to the press and investors. The plan divulges what's in store for all of the brands in the coming years. The last time Chrysler did this back in 2009, many of the items shown were accurate (minus Alfa Romeo). We're going to fill you in on the plans in store for all of the brands and the company itself in the next few years. Jeep Leading off the presentations today was Jeep. Brand CEO Mike Manley described the off-road brand as the "lead global brand" of the company. The brand plans on expanding its lineup from five nameplates to six and sell them in more countries. Chrysler has launched a marketing campaign that has put thousands of adds in newspapers across the country and a new website that thanks America for helping them through this tough time. America has responded to Chryslers adds. The site is here. The majority of the 70+ comments deride Chrysler and their management. The accuse the company of stealing from the American public. That was the very first post. Nice. There were a few positive posts, but they didn't exactly applaud Chrysler or say they were happy with the bailout. I think the bigger concern is with the backlash this bailout is having. I have heard many people echo the sentiments in these…

Chrysler's Hidden Coffers Dan Gerstein, 12.10.08, 12:01 AM EST Link to Article Why is Cerberus, one of the world's richest private equity firms, begging for a bailout? When I wrote about the bailout blunders of the auto industry two weeks ago, I thought the Big Three had most likely topped out on the political outrage meter. But that was before the shady story of Cerberus, the uber-connected private equity firm that owns Chrysler, reared its three ugly heads over the weekend. Buried on the business page of The New York Times Saturday were the details of Detroit's biggest snow job yet--literally as well as figuratively. Turns out that Cerberus CEO John Snow, who …

Responding to word that Chrysler may begin selling off assets and brands soon, Chrysler Vice Chairman and President Tom LaSorda admitted that while the automaker is keen to consider parting with "non-earning assets" or assets that "may be coming due,'" Chrysler "...will not separate the brands from the company." That means that among other things, the struggling automaker may sell tooling for previous-generation vehicles or those on the way out, but it will not part with plants or nameplates. In a post on Chrysler's Firehouse media blog, LaSorda is quoted as saying "What was reported that we're in discussions to sell the Jeep brand is absolutely false... we will not sep…

What is going on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles? Reuters reports that a number of new and redesigned vehicles have been pushed back as the company searches for a new partner. The delays allow FCA to save billions of dollars in investment. Suppliers who have seen say at least 12 future vehicle programs from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram have been delayed. Two of those vehicles, the next Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500 are reportedly moving to dates later in 2017. Suppliers say there are a number of reasons as to the delays such as last-minute design and engineering changes - some of which are helping save a fair amount of cash. FCA declined to comment on the d…

Dodge long ago confirmed that a convertible version of the Challenger was not going to happen, blaming the extreme degree to which the chassis would need stiffening if the roof were removed. Then what did members of the Michigan F-Body Association forum spot riding on a trailer around Auburn Hills, MI, home of Chrysler's headquarters? The pics don't lie, and they're telling us that Dodge did produce at least one Challenger Convertible in Lime Green that never saw the light of day. Numerous tuners have created convertible versions of the Challenger already, many of which debuted at last year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas, but an official version was never shown by Dodge. This o…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 13, 2012 Chrysler's Pentastar V6 has been getting rave reviews since coming out in the new Grand Cherokee in 2010. TCC Test: 2007 Chrysler Sebring Touring Chrysler hopes the Sebring will build on the momentum of the Chrysler 300 and the Caliber, though the former is beginning to slump in its golden years. The mid-size segment home to the Sebring is a huge one-it's good for 2 million units a year, representing 28 per cent of the passenger car market-and Chrysler has a small to nonexistent image in the segment. All this explains the Sebring's grabber styling and long list of options, but does it mean that Chrysler's now reached the same lofty plateau of its Japanese competitors? As the Ford Falcon and current Holden Commodore head off into the sunset, Australian police departments are wondering what should replace them. V6 models were used for patrol duty, while V8 models would be used for pursuits. One possibility is the Chrysler 300. “With the going away of Australian manufacturing, from potential fleet customers we’ve had a lot of enquires for the 300,” said Steve Zanlunghi, head of FCA Australia to Car Advice. “Specifically we’ve had the police come to us, asking for a bid, if it would make sense.” Zanlinghi didn't mention whether the police were interested in the V6 or the 300 SRT with a 6.4L V8. Our possible guess is that the…

0-Day 4-Door Wrangler Supply? Jeep dealer Chuck Eddy in Austintown, Ohio, was used to waiting until spring for Jeep Wrangler customers to show up. When autumn came, sales of the old two-door Wrangler would pretty much dry up. That's because the previous Wrangler, sold with two doors only, was a "box on shocks," a rough and ready vehicle with a drop-down top and side windows made of plastic. It was noisy and the ride bouncy, but it could go anywhere. Wrangler drivers got closer to the elements than drivers of other vehicles. All that changed when the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four-door arrived last fall. These days Eddy has zero days' supply -- in the midst of a …

I've read on various foums that dealers can't seem to keep the Challenger in stock. Yesterday I went to my local dealer to see if they had anything. In a sea of minivans and Avengers there was not a Challenger to be found. I asked the sales rep how they were selling and he told me as fast as they can get them. They got one in last week and it was on the lot for only two days. I think this is an example of how America cars should be made. They shouldn't be designed to be me-too Japanese wannbes. They should be proud of their heritage and designed and engineered to reflect that. So is this the scenario in your neck of the woods?

LaSorda, who takes over January 1, 2006 when current CEO Dieter Zetsche returns to Germany to become chief executive of DaimlerChrysler AG, said next year's new-model launches will surpass the record set in 2004. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 30, 2013 Today, Chrysler announced its earnings for 2012 and the results are staggering. The company reported a net income of $1.7 billion, up substantially from minuscule $183 million profit earned in 2011. Chrysler also saw their 4th quarter net income increase from $225 million in 2011 to $378 million in 2012. The massive increases is due to Chrysler's market share increasing to 11.4%. Chrysler also unveiled a updated product plan for all of its brands. The big news is that Chrysler and Dodge have dropped their Fiat-based models. Despite slow sales, Crossfire will be back in 2008 By BRADFORD WERNLE | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 07/02/07, 8:49 am et DETROIT - The Chrysler Crossfire - once a dramatic symbol of the promised synergies in the DaimlerChrysler merger, a marriage of German technology and American style - has become a bargain bin sports car. What Edmunds.com Says: Dodge may have broken its promise of a Durango hybrid in the past, but this vehicle's chances of coming to fruition are looking quite good. What We Know: It was revealed toward the end of last year that DaimlerChrysler plans to go through with a production-ready Dodge Durango Hybrid by 2007. Sure, the company has promised such a truck before, but it is in a much better position to turn this into a feasible project this time around, especially given its new commitment to develop hybrid drive systems with GM. The last attempt at such a vehicle, the Durango TTR, was abandoned in 2002 after the powertrain system failed to deliver the desired fuel eco…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 4, 2012 Chrysler design chief Ralph Gilles says design changes are coming for future Chrysler products. The current lineup is known for their boxy design aesthetic, but Gilles says that's not in line with the industry. Speaking at the annual Mackinac Policy Conference, a gathering of Michigan political and business leaders, Gilles says aerodynamics are becoming an important design aspect. He uses the Audi A7 and the new Toyota Avalon as vehicles that can have the aerodynamic design usually associated with sports cars. "The wind is starting to sculpt these vehicles," Gilles said. Gilles said Chrysler will be aba…

Dodge Ram Recall Repair Parts Rare The big truck of the company that tells you to "grab life by the horns" has currently been grabbed by the balls by a lack of parts to repair them. More than 140,000 2006 Dodge Ram 1500s are under recall because of front and passenger-side air bags and seat belts that might not function properly with child safety seats. Chrysler notified dealers about the recall Sept. 6. The automaker plans to tell vehicle owners in October, when it has enough replacement parts stocked up to do repairs. Dealers said they've received air bag replacement parts but are waiting for seatbelt parts. Read "Dealers lacking Ram repair parts" @ Detroit Free …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 9, 2012 The U.S. Patent and Trademark office strikes once again. Motor Authority found a filling from Chrysler for a badge that reads EcoDiesel and has "3.0L" nomenclature as part of it. The report says Chrysler filled this last month. Earlier this year, Chrysler announced they would be selling a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. We've been reporting for the past few months that the engine for the Grand Cherokee will be a 3.0L diesel V6 from VM Motori producing 241 HP and 406 lb-ft of torque. Most likely the Grand Cherokee will wear the EcoDiesel badge. As we reported back in June, Chrysler has pushed back…

Today was Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' earnings report day and the results for the past year was a bit mixed. FCA reported a profit of 377 million euros (about $410 million) for 2015. This is a large decrease compared to the 632 million euros (about $689 million) profit for 2014. FCA attributes the decrease to investment costs and a large number of recalls on their vehicles. For the year, FCA said reported adjusted earnings increased 39 percent to 5.3 billion euros (about $5.75 billion) thanks to a strong performance in North America and a European market that is recovering. Total global deliveries for 2015 were 4.6 million vehicles. This is in line with 2014, but f…

Next month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be holding a public hearing to probe Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' handling of 20 different recalls covering 11 million vehicles since 2013. The agency is concerned about the completion rates and other issues on these recalls. But FCA believes this hearing should be skipped. In a 19-page response to questions from NHTSA that was released yesterday, the company argues that its overall recall completion rate is "nearly the best in the industry, with 77 percent. The response goes onto state that they are compliant with existing regulations and are in the process of implementing new programs to impro…

MSNBC - Newsweek Business - commentary Can Chrysler Turn Itself Around? With a new management team in place, the automaker is primed for change. And some of its big-gulp SUVs appear destined to become roadkill. WEB-EXCLUSIVE COMMENTARY By Keith Naughton Sept. 12, 2007 - Bob Nardelli prowled the stage of the Detroit Athletic Club like a caged animal. Made famous by Michael Moore's documentary "Roger & Me," this was the same fusty, old venue that ejected Moore as he hunted down then GM chairman Roger Smith. But last Friday, all eyes were focused on Nardelli. The new 59-year-old CEO of Chrysler was out to show that he'd brought some of the intensity he learned as …

July 4, 2009 - 12:01 am ET MILAN (Reuters) -- CEO Sergio Marchionne's immediate product plans for Chrysler Group could be limited to weeding out weaker models and tweaking prices as he gears up to launch new designs within two years. Marchionne, who also heads Fiat S.p.A., took the wheel at the struggling U.S. car maker in June after sealing a deal for the Italian company to take a 20 percent stake in return for getting Chrysler back to health with the help of Fiat technology. He said on June 26 he hoped to have "at least a road map from a product standpoint" in 14 days, and on Wednesday said he wanted to decide what to do with Chrysler's Dodge and Fiat's Alfa Rom…

Chrysler plans for the future Posted Sep 4th 2008 cnet.com Link to Article At the Western Automotive Journalists' dinner this week, Jim Press, President of Chrysler, told me exactly what I wanted to hear. When I asked how he plans on differentiating the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brands, he put it this way: Jeep will remain an iconic off-roader, with no soft-roaders spoiling the brand; Dodge will be the performance brand, but will also be a volume play; and Chrysler focuses on luxury, competing with brands like Acura. Maybe this type of brand differentiation just fits conventional wisdom, but it seems like a smart plan to me. Yet, in speaking more generally about the…

2009 Jeep JT Concept This Skunkworks project could be the only way to get a pickup back in the Jeep lineup July 11, 2007 | BY ALISA PRIDDLE | Link to Original Article @ Car & Driver In the five years of Chrysler’s Mopar skunkworks program, where designers are given carte blanche with existing production vehicles, the biggest idea to make it into mainstream production is the Sky Slider full-length retractable canvas roof on the new 2008 Jeep Liberty. It hailed from the Liberator skunkworks project from almost three years ago. But the informal group of volunteers at the skunkworks could gain major credibility if the automaker decides to go ahead with the Jeep JT (J…

Chrysler to Show Dealers Three EVs with Production in Mind Posted Sep 3rd 2008 12:31PM AutoBlog Link to Article Link to Gallery While everyone is aware of what GM, Honda and Toyota have been up to when it comes to fuel-saving technology, Chrysler has been playing it close to the chest. The Auburn Hills-based automaker, however, will show its dealers three new all-electric cars at the end of this month that are said to be production capable. Jim Press, the Chrysler exec who came from rival and current hybrid-leader Toyota, added that Chrysler's future platforms were being designed with electrification in mind and that is still has access to t…

DCX Considering Chrysler Group Sale? DaimlerChrysler reported third quarter earnings today of $686 million in net profit, but its Chrysler Group division dragged down that profit margin by posting a loss of $1.47 billion, a figure that completely erased the gain of $1.24 billion made by Mercedes-Benz. During a presentation today, DaimlerChrysler CFO Bodo Uebber didn't rule out the possibility that the Chrysler Group could be sold off. While far from saying the division has a For Sale on its windshield, Uebber told reporters, "We don't exclude anything here... We will do our analysis. Second, we will talk about measures. And third, we will draw our conclusions." Read …

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has made the decision to cut the Chrysler brand in the UK to focus more on Jeep. "We have made a decision to shift our focus away from Chrysler and toward other FCA brands," a Chrysler spokesman told Automotive News. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' deputy UK managing director Karl Howkins told Autocar the decision came down to Chrysler products not being very appealing to UK customers and that the CO2 emissions on their lineup were too high. Chrysler sold the 300, Voyager (Town and Country), and a rebadged versions of the Lancia Delta and Ypsilon. According to the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Chrysler only sold 1,982 vehicles la…

Chrysler Design Done with the 'Edge' Going Organic Posted Sep 2nd 2008 9:32AM AutoBlog Link to Article Link to Hi-Res Gallery of ecoVoyager concept Trevor Creed resigned from the position of Chrysler's head of design, and as of today is succeeded by Ralph Gilles, the man who designed the 300C. Since every change at the top comes with a "new sheriff in town" speech -- or at least one-liner -- this is what Gilles had to say: "It's definitely time for a new aesthetic at Chrysler. ... We're done with the 'edge' look." Gilles says he wants the Pentastar's cars to look more "organic." This being art, however, that could really mean anything. For concrete exampl…

The chief executive of Chrysler says the automaker's recovery will be gradual but the company is making progress following its speedy government-led bankruptcy. CEO Sergio Marchionne (MAR-key-own-ee) said in a speech to a Washington think tank that his new leadership team is "not planning miracles at Chrysler" but is committed to creating "rapid change" at the Michigan automaker. Marchionne's Fiat Group SpA owns 20 percent of Chrysler with an opportunity for more and was put in charge of rescuing the automaker by the U.S. government. Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy protection in June. He told the Peterson Institute for International Economics that Chrysler broke even …

Drove a co-worker's Charger R/T today. Great looking car outside. Great looking inside. Nice room. Fantastic power. . Don't know if it was the tires or what, but I noticed quite a bit of road noise coming in the cabin on the highway.....seemed odd. The interior materials were suprisingly nice. The wife and I rented a Chrysler 300 a couple of years ago and the interior was REALLY cheap on it. I was real disappointed, so it was a nice suprise to see the interior on the Charger seem classy. My buddy said he's getting close to 20 MPG combined city/hwy. Not too shabby for a HEMI, but he only has 1250 miles on the clock. Within the next year or so, I need to buy …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 3, 2013 The SRT Viper has been one of the most anticipated vehicles of this year. But it seems that anticipation isn't bringing many buyers. Automotive News is reporting that Chrysler is cutting back on Viper production from nine to six per day, and will be reassigning a number of employees to different facilities. "We're really looking at the reality of this type of car in this economy, as well as us controlling the market and making sure that we don't overbuild," said SRT CEO Ralph Gilles. A good thing since there 565 Vipers sitting on dealer lots at the moment. Dealers have only sold 426 Vipers since going o…

Not a pleasant day at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as the company was handed a $70 Million fine by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for failing to report death and injury claims to regulators. Now this penalty comes from FCA admitting to NHTSA that it failed to provide Early Warning Report data to NHTSA over several years starting in 2003. Now this is required by the TREAD Act of 2000 where an automaker provides claims of death and injuries, warranty claims, consumer complaints and field reports of safety issues as a way to identify a possible defect. Automotive News reports that FCA has brought in a third-party to do an audit of its reporting failu…
