Jetting around By Bob Lutz | GM Vice Chairman | Link to Original Post @ GM FastLane Blog Thursday night out at the Oakland County Airport I had the pleasure of helping Saab USA General Manager Steve Shannon introduce the Saab 9-7X Aero and 9-3 at the welcome reception of the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance. As you know, Saab was “born from jets,” so I flew my Aero L-39 ZO “Albatros,” a demilitarized Czech-built fighter jet once used by the Libyan Air Force, from Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti to Oakland County for the occasion. Then, to benefit Meadow Brook Hall, we auctioned off a ride in the jet. So I’ll be piloting Eastern Michigan University aviation student Phi…

finally some sort of picture for the 9-4x. "Spy photographers have captured the first pictures showing a test mule for the new Saab 9-4X. Designed from the ground up as a Saab — rather than a re-badging exercise — the 2009 9-4X is a collaboration between engineers in Rüsselsheim, Germany and designers in Trollhättan, Sweden." More at Leftlanenews.com I see some AWD/RWD components. Anyone agree/disagree?

The old SAAB 9-3 has risen from the dead! The platform, now owned by National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) is being used as the basis for a "new" electric vehicle. The 9-3EV has gone into production in Tianjin China in a factory that can assemble up to 50,000 units a year. Further manufacturing facilities are being set up in Trollhättan, Sweden and a new facility in Shanghai China. Back in January, Evergrande Groupe, an investor in Faraday Future, purchased a 51% stake in NEVS for $930 million. Evergrande is being tight lipped about the cars and no details have yet been released for range, power, battery size, or even On Sale dates. View full article

Other exterior visual enhancements appear to include chromed door handles and possibly LED daytime-running lamps. Definitely a bolder look for GM's Sweedish import marque.

October 10, 2013 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com It is October 10th, a bit too early for Halloween, and yet here is a zombie starting to show signs of being undead. National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) has confirmed that they have most of the agreements in place with parts suppliers to restart production of the 9-3 in Trollhättan, Sweden within a few months. NEVS is focusing primarily on suppliers in or close to Sweden to allow for shorter lead times, lower cost, and to bring greater benefit to the local economy. NEVS Purchasing Manager, Per Svantesson says, "We have 400 supplier agreements in place with only a few dozen left to complete in the n…

Saab 9-4X to bow in Detroit [size=3Cadillac to get variant[/size] 09/14/07, 03:06pm, EDT | Link to Original Article @ LeftLaneNews Saab is close to completing the developmental stage of the all-new 9-4X we reported on just a few days ago. Based on a mix of the re-engineered Theta and Epsilon 2 architectures, the mid-sized crossover will make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It has also been revealed that Cadillac will get a version of the vehicle to help spread development costs. According to Saab boss Jan Ake Jonsson, both models are expected to get GM's new diesel engine co-developed with VM Motori, which puts out 250 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque…

The midsized sedan has been growing in all directions for decades, but soaring fuel prices have customers begging for something smaller. GM is heeding the call as it is preparing a smaller batch of next generation Saabs. The next 9-3 was originally slated to be underpinned by the Epsilon II, but in March GM decided to instead utilize the lower-medium Delta architecture. The Delta platform will also be used for the next-gen Chevy Cruze, which is slated to eventually replace the Cobalt. The end result will be a smaller, lighter, more efficient Swedish sedan. With the 9-3 shrinking, Saab will also need to down-size its planned 9-1, which was originally scheduled to be Delt…

here is how id fix Saab.. 9-1.. this would be a hardtop coupe model derived from the kappa platform.. it would be a two seater.. this would be simular to the solstice but they would only share doors and the windshield with that car.. it would be built alongside the solstice and sky in wilmington del. 9-2.. current subaru based model would die after the 2007 model year.. 9-2.. this would be sold as a four door sedan and a 5 door wagon, in essence it would be a reskinned Chevrolet Cobalt, it would only share the underbody, windshield and roof with the cobalt sedan.. there would be no stripper model.. it would be built alongside the cobalt and G5 in Lordstown Ohio..…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 12, 2013 A U.S. District court judge has dismissed the $3 billion lawsuit filed by Spyker on behalf of Saab against General Motors last August. The suit alleged GM blocked the sale of Saab's assets to Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Co and eliminate a potential rival in the growing Chinese market. "General Motors had a contractual right to approve or disapprove the proposed transaction. The court is going to grant the motion to dismiss the matter," said U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain during a hearing in Detroit. Judge Drain said GM acted legally in order to protect its intellectual property and that it…

Not the greatest image, but you can definitely make out some Saab characteristics in this new CUV. To be based on Epsilon 2 / Theta platform with a 250hp 2.8V6 and turbo charged 300hp version as well. To be made in Mexico and introduced in Spring 2008 as a MY2009 model. This model will spell the end of the 9-7X. Here is the image blown up, gets very pixilated though..

Reuters Automotive News / January 17, 2006 - 9:00 am FRANKFURT -- General Motors' premium brand Saab lost more than $300 million in 2005, a German newspaper reported on Tuesday, heaping pressure on GM given calls from investor Tracinda to sell Saab and other loss-making units. The Handelsblatt daily cited company sources saying Saab's loss widened from nearly $200 million in 2004, but a GM Europe spokesman said the company does not break out earnings for individual brands and would not comment further on earnings before its quarterly report on Jan. 26. The spokesman said Saab had its best ever fourth-quarter sales at the close of last year and its highest annual sales…

What was coming down the pipeline had the company stuck around? SaabsUnited has the pictures and story behind the next Saab were it still in business, the 9-3 dubbed 'Phoenix'. The new 9-3 was spearheaded by designer Jason Castriota. Castriota was the person behind the PhoeniX concept shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Castroita had a huge mission ahead of him with the design of the 9-3 as this excerpt shows. SaabsUnited notes in their story that Castriota and his team were limited by time and money. Ok guys I need help. I was waiting for the Astra but I don't think I can make it that long. So I then started to consider the Lancer. Then I realized that the Saab 9-3 has 3-4K rebates and that I could get one for a great price. My boss’s mom works for GM and got her 9-3 convertible at a great price. I may be able to persuade her to help me in this measure but I just wanted to know if it was worth asking. Does anyone her know how much a base model Saab 9-3 is employee pricing? Thanks.

G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com Tuesday, 21st February, 2011 No doubt about it, the drama surrounding the bankruptcy of Saab almost seems scripted enough to be fit for daytime television at times. The latest news to come out of Trollhättan is no exception, now that the Swedish automaker is looking for a new suitor. According to a recent post on Saabs United, Saab's bankruptcy administrators have 6 to 7 bidders interested in purchasing the company and that each bidder is serious about building new Saabs. Among Saab's new suitors in particular is a European automaker which, according to Saabs United's rather patulous sources, "is German and located in Munic…

Saab is on the verge of a major new product offensive - but the company's manufacturing base might be moved from Sweden, General Motors chief Rick Wagoner says. 'I've seen Saab's forthcoming product portfolio and I've never been more optimistic about the future of the company than I am today,' he told What Car? today. 'Our plan is to deliver a wider range of models with shorter life cycles compared with the Saab of old, which relied on a few models in production for a long time. 'Now we just have to make a business out of it. The notion of 500 engineers working away somewhere in Sweden is very romantic, but it's not the way the…

The Continuing Story of Saab, Part 412.5: Three Ring Circus William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2011 Saab’s goal of getting out bankruptcy is turning very nasty. First, Autocar is reporting the court-appointed administrator placed in charge of the company's reorganization affairs, Guy Lofalk has asked the Swedish court to terminate the automaker's reorganization process. Lofalk doesn’t have enough confidence in Saab getting enough funding to continue with the process. This move would end the Saab’s protection from creditors while it looked for money. Saab is upset with Lofalk’s decision and has applied to the Swedish court to…

So I mentioned to a coworker the other day about the Saab 9-3 Sportcombi and he was like "Ewww Saab? Don't think you want to get one of those". I read the other thread about the theory on poor quality ratings, but what's the real deal here? Have there been that many complaints and reliability issues with Saabs as of late? Especially enough to cause this sort of stigma? I would like to consider this for a purchase in another 6-12 months, but don't want to regret the purchase shortly thereafter. Which brings up another question...how well do Saabs retain their trade-in value?

For what is probably only the second time since General Motors Corp. acquired Saab Automobile, the Swedish brand will be profitable this year, says Jay G. Spenchian, general manager of Saab Cars U.S.A. Inc. Spenchian also says he has been assured by Fritz Henderson, president-GM Europe, that Saab is an important part of the company, and its product portfolio will be expanded, not terminated, as some reports suggest. The Saab chief says worldwide sales will total 140,000 units this year, including 42,000 in the U.S. That represents a 12% increase, including fleet sales, over 2004. Meanwhile, Spenchian says he did not learn about GM's divestiture of its Fuji He…

Meet Saab's '07 9-3 While the 9-3's exterior carries over largely unchanged, it's interior recieves a moderate facelift for the '07 model year. The initial interior image posted last month was met with almost universal disapproval here on C&G. Luckily, further examination of the below images reveals a much-less "GMified" interior than earlier photos suggested. The lower-dash no-longer resembles a Casio and that black-tie radio certainly isn't the one out of your Cobalt. The links are in Swedish (sorry), but Swedish Auto Motor & Sport reports that the NG Saab 9-3 can be delayed until 2012 and also that it might change its platform to DeltaII instead of sitting on EpsilonII. Given that the size stats on that LaCrosse mule spotted in Sweden (IIRC not that much longer than the Insignia), I'd expect the NG 9-5 to be around 4850mm in length. Why then have an EpsilonII 9-3 if you can use the DeltaII platform, which I assume is AWD compatible, to produce a NG 9-3 range consisting of Sedan/Wagon, but also with a family of 3-door and 5-door hatches, to return some quirkyness to Saab? For comparison purposes, Astras range from around 4.2m to …

Koenigsegg Group AB Terminates Agreement For Purchase of Saab DETROIT -- General Motors confirmed today that the proposed sale of its Saab subsidiary to Koenigsegg Group AB was terminated at the discretion of the buyer. "We're obviously very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase," said GM President and CEO, Fritz Henderson. "Many have worked tirelessly over the past several months to create a sustainable plan for the future of Saab by selling the brand and its manufacturing interests to Koenigsegg Group AB. Given the sudden change in direction, we will take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps…

Over the last six months, the fate of Saab has become even more of a question than it has been for the last several years. General Motors put the marque up for strategic review last Fall and it was not listed among the company's core brands when it submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Congress in December. With many of its new model introductions being delayed this year, one has to wonder if Saab will just slowly slide off into oblivion. Given the seeming absence of anyone willing to step up and buy the Swedish automaker, that may yet happen. Before that time, though, Saab dealers in Europe will get at least two additions to their product lineup. The 9-3X and the re…

Article CEO of GM's Saab sees stagnation in 2008 -magazine Sat Feb 9, 2008 12:06pm EST FRANKFURT, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Unprofitable Swedish carmaker Saab expects unit sales to stagnate this year, the head of Saab told Germany's auto, motor und sport magazine, which reported the General Motors (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) could turn profitable in 2010. Saab sold 125,000 units worldwide last year, less than the 133,00 it sold in the previous year, the magazine said on Saturday in an advanced abstract. "We expect roughly the same scale for 2008," Jan-Ake Jonsson told the German magazine. "It is our target to sell 150,000 to 200,000 units per year. But in order to …

Saab Denied Court Protection William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 8, 2011 Saab is running out of lives. Yesterday, the company filed a request in Swedish Court asking for protection, citing if approved, the company would undergo a voluntary reorganization. Today, a Swedish court has denied Saab's application. In a statement released by the Vanersborg district court in west Sweden, they believe the reorganization process wouldn't work for Saab. Saab say they're appealing the ruling. "Saab Automobile is disappointed with the ruling and will appeal the District Court's decision," the company said today. This leaves Saab in a prec…

GM @ South Florida Auto Show SAAB 9-3 Convertible SAAB 9-3 Sport Sedan Check out the new SAAB fascias front and rear. The ‘ice block’ taillamps actually look rather nice in person (especially in softer colors like the blue convertible), but the real coup de grace is the incorporation of the CTS’ light pipes as DRLs in the front headlamps. The manner in which it flows with the upper grille lines makes it, dare I say, a more cohesive execution that in the Cadillac. It really looks awesome in person. This combined with the CTS and bejeweled headlamps of the Escalade Platinum makes a clear statement about how new headlamps technologies will be parlayed in the near …

First customer deliveries are being rolled out in Europe from September 5 and Saab dealers around the world have already placed advance orders for more than 8,500 cars, a record for the launch phase of a new Saab model. To meet such unprecedented demand, overtime is being introduced at the Saab assembly plant in Trollhättan, Sweden, and this year's production target has been increased by more than 30 per cent, to 20,000 cars. "We are delighted to have a bulging order book for this new product and our main challenge right now is to meet the high level of customer demand at our dealerships," says Jan-Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's managing director. &quo…

When GM aquired half of Saab (later to be all of Saab), their cars were still manufactured in Sweden. Currently, the 9-3 and the 9-5 are the only cars manufactured in Sweden. The NG 9-3 will be moved to the Opel plant in Germany and I assume that the 9-5 will be moved as well. With those two cars in Germany, and the 9-7x in America, what is Swedish about Saab? Is there anything at all? The only hope would be if the anticipated 9-4x and 9-1 would be built in Sweden. But the question remains: in the cars that are not manufactured at the Swedish plant, what is Swedish about them?

Geneva Preview: More Details Uncovered on Saab Sports Concept Date posted: 02-03-2006 DETROIT — With the Geneva Motor Show less than a month away, Saab insiders have begun to leak additional details about the concept sports car that will be unveiled on March 1. Described as a two-passenger coupe about the size of the Aston Martin DB9, the Saab two-door — which may or may not revive the old Sonett badge — is said to be a pure concept. Contrary to widespread speculation, it is not based on any existing General Motors platform and, unfortunately for Saab aficionados, there appear to be no immediate plans for production. However, Saab executives say the concept is signif…

Saab plans to expand its lineup by at least two more models, double its U.S. sales by decade's end and raise awareness of the brand through advertising, top Saab officials said Thursday. The aggressive strategy comes as GM takes a more active role in growing its long-neglected European luxury brand and tries to increase its presence in new vehicle categories and foreign markets amid slumping sales in North America. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 18, 2012 The Saab story is only getting worse and worse. When we last checked in on Saab, they had announced a deal with Youngman automotive and a bank in China and were waiting on approval from GM and the Chinese. Well Saab might have just used it's last life. Yesterday, General Motors announced they wouldn't support the new agreement. And the news gets even worse for Saab. In a press release today, Saab's parent company Swedish Automotive revealed the administrator in charge of Saab's reorganization for the Swedish government, Mr.…

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 28, 2005 DETROIT-- General Motors is considering a crossover vehicle for its Saab brand. Could BMW revive Saab in much the same way it has MINI? Perhaps the way to do it is hone down Saab to one line with a rich and unique personality and heritage. Saab's best days were with the 900 line. BMW could use a unique, practical line (4 doors) below its 1 series. A new 900 Turbo 4-cyl in four door hatchback, sportwagon and convertible could be made with MINI and BMW parts in the Trollhattan factory. Starting prices at $20,000 (just above the MINI). At this price there's a genuine market for people who can't afford a Bimmer but want one (even if it's front-drive which is OK - drive a MINI and you'll know what I mean). GM sells it to BMW for $1. Done. Of c…

With Saab heading into bankruptcy, companies are coming in to snap up pieces of the brand. Hans Bergqvist, the administrator in charge of liquidating Saab told Swedish publication NyTeknik that many companies are interested in Saab's assets. Berggvist did confirmed that one of the companies interested is Youngman Automotive. This should come as no surprise as the company tried to save Saab until the last minute and has invested tens of millions of euros to help pay for wages and taxes. A spokesman for the company said that it was primarily interested in the Phoenix platform that would have underpinned the next-generation 9-3 and possibly other technologies that didn't i…

I have recently been driving a pristine, '01 Saab 9-3 5door, which was recently acquired by my company. Fun, roomy and very practical (my 70lb. dog can fit in the rear hatch area)...I really like the car...everything works, except a burnt out headlamp. Not a big deal, right? Here's the issue: EVERY time you turn on the car, it's messanging center describes ALL of the car's current problems (low washer fuid, headlamp out)...in big, bold letters that sit there if you don't use the radio or manually clear them... So, as a consumer, you are reminded of flaws each time you sit in the car. Could this influence people filling out surveys? I think it could. My wife notices …
