Filed under: Government/Legal, GM, Saab 2010 Saab 9-5 - Click above for high-res image gallery According to Automotive News, Federal Express letters arrived at 81 of Saab's 218 dealers on Thursday stating that their franchises had not been selected to move forward and become a dealer for the post-sale entity, Saab Cars North America. The package from General Motors said that Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg, Saab's buyer, had selected only certain stores based on its business plan requiring strong, well-located dealers showing profits and high volume. All Saab dealers signed termination agreements in June when GM entered bankruptcy. The dealers who received reject le…

Filed under: Saab Having concluded the relationship with its former sugar daddy, GM, Saab is scouting locations for its new corporate headquarters to make a fresh start. According to one report, that location could be Royal Oak, Michigan, about fifteen miles from Detroit. Saab apparently has $2.2 million to invest in a new HQ over the next five years, where it plans to house "mostly sales and marketing functions." The building in question is 13,000 square feet and boasts the few amenities necessary to Saab's situation: offices for 50 people and a large garage. A Saab spokeswoman said Royal Oak is "trendy" and fits "our customer demographics." Finalizing the deal look…

Filed under: Sedan, Wagon, China, Plants/Manufacturing, Saab If Billy Joel is right that only the good die young, the outgoing Saab 9-5 has been very, very bad. In automotive terms, the 9-5 is positively ancient, having first seen the light of day in 1997 and getting very little in the way of meaningful changes since that time. If, though, you happen to like cars that feature a design that's... shall we say, "proven," we have some good news to report. According to Autocar, the old 9-5 will get a new lease on life from China's Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation (BAIC). It's not clear what changes (if any) will be made to the car in its new incarnation, or if BAIC …

The Saab 9-5 is long overdue for an overhaul, with the basic mechanical underpinnings in the current model first hitting streets as far back as 1997. A totally redesigned model was expected to make an appearance last year but its release was pushed back due to limited resources at Saab and the introduction of the facelifted 9-3, not to ... Filed under: Frankfurt Motor Show, Sedan, Saab 2010 Saab 9-5 - Click above for high-res image gallery To be honest, there have been points at which it felt like this new Saab 9-5 would never see the light of day. To say that the outgoing model had grown long in the tooth would be a colossal understatement, and in the hyper-competitive market that is the globe's entry-level premium segment, the 9-5 had become something of a placeholder, playing second fiddle to the automaker's newer, more dynamic 9-3. So with its own cheaper sibling playing the role of upstager and parent General Motors in the throes of bankruptcy, we didn't exactly have faith that Saab would ever launc…

It seems there is a real business reason for Koenigsegg's puch to buy SAAB and seek those European Investment Bank loans that will fund research in the areas related to improving efficiency and emissions. Link to AutoblogGreen post.

Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Saab, Rumormill 2010 Saab 9-5 sedan - Click above for high-res image gallery We've already heard about the five engine options slated for the Saab 9-5 upon its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. Apparently, there's plenty more on the horizon in the coming years, including Saab's first production hybrid powertrain. According to Autocar, the hybrid system will match diesel fuel economy numbers while providing lower emissions and competitive performance. It seems Saab will pair an electric motor with excellent torque characteristics right from idle with a highly-tuned 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 120 hors…

What a difference the Aero-X paint and wheels make... and what a fabulous looking car. Like the G8, it's a shame how GM loses a breakthrough car shortly after its debut... http://jalopnik.com/5346842/2010-saab-9+5-...bos-all-swedish Edit: Apparently this is the Aero model, which also gets different front and rear fascias.

Filed under: Wagon, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Saab 2010 Saab 9-3X commercial - Click above to watch video Saab really has been changing perspective lately, from the look of its cars to the people who decide on the look of its cars. That kind of thing will happen when you enter bankruptcy and are sold back into the bosom of your homeland. So this Saab 9-3X commercial is a, yes, quirky, look at the the philosophy behind Trollhatten's finest. Who else would make an ad that includes a paper airplane, an ant, a moose and a pine cone to advertise a station wagon? Follow the jump to watch the video or check out Saab's new lifted wagon in all its high-res glory in our g…

Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Sedan, Crossover, Saab There are many folks who've wanted big things from Saab, including this blogger, but we never seemed to get them. The company sold 93,220 cars in 2008, a drop of more than 25% from the previous year, and getting sucked into this year's General Motors saga hasn't exactly helped to create any believers in Saab's return to form. But the quirkier Swedish brand has been taken over by Koenigsegg, and the little company is said to have big plans for the bigger one. Saab's product lineup, as laid out by Swedish car mag Auto Motor & Sport, will have the expected new 9-5 and 9-4 CUV at Frankfurt this year. Next year co…

Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Saab, Luxury 2010 Saab 9-5 - Click above for high-res image gallery It didn't take long for the floodgates of official pictures to open after the first set of leaked images gave us an early glimpse at the new 2010 Saab 9-5 inside and out. Just as before, we're cautiously optimistic that this attractive sedan (though it's appearance is certainly polarizing to many) will look as good in the flesh as it does in pictures. In this latest round of images, we get a better look at many of the new 9-5's most interesting details, including its pronounced grille and fascia, multi-hued side mirrors, full-length LED brake lighting and bottom-edge …

Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Saab 2010 Saab 9-5 - Click above for image gallery UPDATE: Autobild has released 26 stock photos of the 2010 9-5, with plenty of detail shots including several of the cabin. We're attempting to track down all of the official high-res images and data, but in the meantime, check them out by clicking the image above. We've been seeing disguised spy shots of Saab's pivotal new 9-5 sedan for some time now, and we've liked what we've seen, even if we haven't been able to peel back the covers all the way. Well, a spate of scanned images have hit the internet of what appears to be a production-ready example, and we're cautiously graduating our …

Saab’s split from General Motors and pending sale to supercar company Koenigsegg will apparently have no major affect on the Swedish automaker’s future model launches, such as that of the upcoming 9-4X crossover. The new crossover will share much in common with the recently-revealed Cadillac SRX and is to be manufactured by GM at the same Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico as the Cadillac later this year. This close association and GM’s precarious financial state had many worried that the 9-4X could be delayed, but according to GM's executive director of product and marketing for Cadillac, Hummer and Saab, Steve Shannon, the new model will be launched next year as a 2…

Unstable atom Jun 18th 2009 From The Economist print edition Does the troubled Swedish firm have a future? AFPKoenigsegg attempts fusion THE fact that bankrupt General Motors appears to have flogged three of its unwanted brands—Saturn to a car dealer, Hummer to a Chinese maker of heavy-duty trucks and now Saab to a tiny sports car company—lends substance to the idea that there’s one born every minute. The buyers may not be paying much, but at a time when the car industry should be consolidating rather than atomising, they are taking on an awful lot of risk. Of the three, only the fate of Saab will be of any concern to car lovers: Saturns were sold to people who wer…

Filed under: GM, Saab Koenigsegg is one of the most elite exotic car builders on earth. In a good year, the ultra high-end automaker produces a few dozen of its million dollar masterpieces. It's the limited nature of Koenigsegg that makes its purchase of the much larger Saab a real head-scratcher, but that isn't stopping the company's founder from aiming for the stars. Norwiegen designer and Koenigsegg controlling owner Baard Ecker tells Automotive News that he intends to revive the "soul and spirit" of Saab, while also sparking some creativity in the sagging auto industry. Tall order, that is. Koenigsegg's offer for Saab includes the financial backing of the Swedish …

We don't have much to go on yet, but Swedish television is reportedly claiming that Koenigsegg, makers of ultra high-performance exotic supercars, and a group of Norwegian investors have signed a letter of intent with Saab to take over the brand from General Motors. Final negotiations will reportedly take place in the coming months. Along with Saturn and Hummer, Saab was put up for sale by GM before the automaker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Many companies and investor groups from all over the world, including China, were reportedly interested in the Swedish brand, and despite how crazy it sounds, Koenigsegg was thrown into the list of finalists late last month. Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedans/Saloons, Wagons/Estates, Crossovers/CUVs, Saab Saab seems to be eking out as much exposure as possible from its upcoming 9-5 sedan and wagon. The Swedish automaker has reportedly flown a number of European journalists to the Saab museum in its home town of Trollhattan, where what appears to be production-ready versions of the new 9-5 in wagon form were covered up with nothing but thin, somewhat translucent covers. Due to the nature of such form-fitting attire, we can clearly see the outline of the brand's familiar front fascia, albeit slightly modified with a more deep-set look than current models. There is also just a hint of headlight…

These images of a covered-up 2010 Saab 9-5 Wagon come from Saab's "showroom of the future" and they reveal a deeper-grilled familiar Saab face, sweeping headlights and a dollop of chrome. We've seen the upcoming 2010 Saab 9-5 sedan running around in various states of undress for some time now. Now here's the first glimpses at the wagon wearing a very form-fitting car cover. The grille keeps the "SAAB" text front and center flanked by what appears to be a set of plane-inspired wings. 'Round back there's not much to see except the sailing C-pillar as on the current car and Saaby window lines, a cross-car piece of trim we're assuming is chrome and some undercut detail …

Filed under: China, Saab, Earnings/Financials Analysts have been speculating for years just how Chinese automakers would enter the North American market. The struggles of U.S. automakers have provided plenty of opportunities to purchase mature marques from the likes of General Motors or Ford, but so far, only Hummer has been added by a company from the land of the Great Wall. Beijing Auto, which partners with Daimler in China, was reportedly vying for Opel, but now Gasgoo, through a report in the South China Morning Post, is reporting that the Chinese automaker has turned its attention to Saab. Saab CEO Jan-Ake Jonsson has announced that only two suitors are now biddi…
