Saab To Head Into Bankruptcy Today? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 11, 2011 Saab could be heading into bankruptcy today, if a report from Autocar is to be believed. According to the story, £60 million loan ($94M USD) from Chinese automaker Youngman Automotive is likely to be denied by the Chinese government. The reason why is due to the deal not having any intellectual property rights being acquired. Saab has been waiting on a £60 million loan from Youngman and an additional £210M ($328M) from Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile and PangDa Automotive to help pay off debts and workers. The only problem is the Chinese government…

G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com Tuesday, 21st February, 2011 No doubt about it, the drama surrounding the bankruptcy of Saab almost seems scripted enough to be fit for daytime television at times. The latest news to come out of Trollhättan is no exception, now that the Swedish automaker is looking for a new suitor. According to a recent post on Saabs United, Saab's bankruptcy administrators have 6 to 7 bidders interested in purchasing the company and that each bidder is serious about building new Saabs. Among Saab's new suitors in particular is a European automaker which, according to Saabs United's rather patulous sources, "is German and located in Munic…

First customer deliveries are being rolled out in Europe from September 5 and Saab dealers around the world have already placed advance orders for more than 8,500 cars, a record for the launch phase of a new Saab model. To meet such unprecedented demand, overtime is being introduced at the Saab assembly plant in Trollhättan, Sweden, and this year's production target has been increased by more than 30 per cent, to 20,000 cars. "We are delighted to have a bulging order book for this new product and our main challenge right now is to meet the high level of customer demand at our dealerships," says Jan-Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's managing director. &quo…

October 10, 2013 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com It is October 10th, a bit too early for Halloween, and yet here is a zombie starting to show signs of being undead. National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) has confirmed that they have most of the agreements in place with parts suppliers to restart production of the 9-3 in Trollhättan, Sweden within a few months. NEVS is focusing primarily on suppliers in or close to Sweden to allow for shorter lead times, lower cost, and to bring greater benefit to the local economy. By Mike Harrison Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV today said it has submitted a renewed offer for General Motors Co.’s Saab unit. “An 11-point proposal had been submitted to GM, addressing each of the issues that arose during the due diligence process” which will “remove each of the obstacles that were standing in the way of a swift transaction,” Spyker Chief Executive Officer Victor R. Muller said in a statement. GM last week said it will shut the money-losing Saab unit after talks collapsed on a sale to Spyker, the second failure in less than a month to keep the 72-year-old Swedish brand alive. GM and Spyker decided there was “no point in carrying on” after …

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05244/563326.stm Saab wagon's interior uninviting Thursday, September 01, 2005 By Don Hammonds, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Saving money on production costs is clearly a top priority with automakers, which means the days when each make would have its own engine, frame, body and styling are gone, replaced with one platform and set of components to make a wide variety of models. Saab Saab's 9-2X retains the carmaker's identity with its front end, side profile and sharp alloy wheels. That's OK, I guess, as long as each product still has a separate identity. But it can be a problem when identities don'…

Saab Has Been Saved Once Again William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 16, 2011 Somehow, Saab has found another savior in China who has agreed to a joint venture after the deal with Hawtai Motor fell through. Who happens to be the knight in shining armor? The knight is Pang da Automobile Trade Co.,the largest distributor of vehicles in China. The deal agreed by the two companies has Pang da buying $43 million in Saab vehicles, and then buying $21 million in Saabs thirty days later. Also, Pang da will pay $92 million for a 24 percent stake in the automaker. These investments will help Saab with their cash problems and get production back u…

Still Flowing Toward the Mainstream Saab aims for sport touring sedan experience with its new 9-3 lineup. Monday, February 6, 2006 By Frank Aukofer - Scripps Howard News Service Like a flamboyant circus acrobat relegated to a support role, Saab has lost some of its audience appeal. Sales of its sport sedans and wagons, the 9-3 and 9-5, have slipped. To bring back some of the luster, the Swedish company added a couple of new models, though they weren’t really Saabs. One is the 9-2, a reworked version of the Subaru WRX, and the other is the 9-7X SUV, based on the Chevrolet Trail Blazer. For 2006, it also has added the 9-3 SportKombi, a four-door station wagon version …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 14, 2011 Last time on the story of Saab; Guy Lofalk, the court-appointed administrator of Saab’s voluntary reorganization filed paperwork to end the reorganization and the Swedish courts would make decision this Friday. But like all other times, Saab has found a lifeline to keep them afloat. This time, Saab has found two. Lifeline #1 comes from Youngman Automotive who sent Saab 3.45 million Euros (about $5 million U.S. dollars) to cover immediate tax expenses this week. But that's not all; Youngman is promising a further $26.4 million payment this week to cover unpaid salaries and $13.2 million more by the en…

When GM aquired half of Saab (later to be all of Saab), their cars were still manufactured in Sweden. Currently, the 9-3 and the 9-5 are the only cars manufactured in Sweden. The NG 9-3 will be moved to the Opel plant in Germany and I assume that the 9-5 will be moved as well. With those two cars in Germany, and the 9-7x in America, what is Swedish about Saab? Is there anything at all? The only hope would be if the anticipated 9-4x and 9-1 would be built in Sweden. But the question remains: in the cars that are not manufactured at the Swedish plant, what is Swedish about them?

Saab releases pricing for '08 9-3 Link to Original Article @ LeftLaneNews Saab has redesigned its popular 9-3 model for the 2008 model year and today the General Motors-owned Swedish carmaker released some pricing details for the upcoming model. http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti.../339324355/1056 "After dissolving its relationship with Subaru that would have led to a Tribeca-based crossover, Saab went to work on one of its own. The result is the 9-4X BioPower concept. Not surprisingly, Saab also uses a green theme by equipping the concept with an E85-burning, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Don't let the relatively small engine size deceive you because Saab employs its "rightsizing" techniques to extract 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from the engine. Power is delivered to the wheels through Saab's all-wheel-drive system with electronic rear limited-slip differential that debuted on the 9-3. …

Saab Denied Court Protection William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 8, 2011 Saab is running out of lives. Yesterday, the company filed a request in Swedish Court asking for protection, citing if approved, the company would undergo a voluntary reorganization. Today, a Swedish court has denied Saab's application. In a statement released by the Vanersborg district court in west Sweden, they believe the reorganization process wouldn't work for Saab. Link to Article In the interest of making its Saab brand more attractive for purchase, General Motors is reportedly looking at returning more autonomy to its Swedish subsidiary. As it stands now, Saab is basically a glorified Swedish imprint of the Opel record label. Indeed, a lot of engineering, and even construction, for Saab cars goes on in Russelsheim, Germany, Opel's home. The biggest development is that Saab would gain control over its own finances and decisions. Although GM would still be Saab's owner, the Swedish Patient would have its own budget (a figure that has yet to be determined). The idea behind the move is that giving Saab additional financial autonom…

The old SAAB 9-3 has risen from the dead! The platform, now owned by National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) is being used as the basis for a "new" electric vehicle. The 9-3EV has gone into production in Tianjin China in a factory that can assemble up to 50,000 units a year. Further manufacturing facilities are being set up in Trollhättan, Sweden and a new facility in Shanghai China. Back in January, Evergrande Groupe, an investor in Faraday Future, purchased a 51% stake in NEVS for $930 million. Evergrande is being tight lipped about the cars and no details have yet been released for range, power, battery size, or even On Sale dates. View full article

Reuters Automotive News / January 17, 2006 - 9:00 am FRANKFURT -- General Motors' premium brand Saab lost more than $300 million in 2005, a German newspaper reported on Tuesday, heaping pressure on GM given calls from investor Tracinda to sell Saab and other loss-making units. The Handelsblatt daily cited company sources saying Saab's loss widened from nearly $200 million in 2004, but a GM Europe spokesman said the company does not break out earnings for individual brands and would not comment further on earnings before its quarterly report on Jan. 26. The spokesman said Saab had its best ever fourth-quarter sales at the close of last year and its highest annual sales…

Naturally Swedened By Erin Riches Date posted: 10-17-2005 Inside this dimly lit Stockholm pub the stress level is zero. No one's rushed in here. People spend hours nursing draft beer and warm plates of meat. Two hours, two lagers and a dozen meatballs later, we realize the best part about the 2006 Saab 9-5, which we drove yesterday on the two-lane roads north of this historic city. It's still a Saab. Svante Kinell, brand manager for the 9-5, says there are 1,367 changes on the 2006 model, but these changes haven't squashed that intangible something that makes it a Saab. They've just made it a better Saab. Over a Thousand Changes Although numerous, t…

By JASON STEIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS GENEVA -- Saab and Opel are developing hybrid systems that will appear on a range of mainstream vehicles before 2010. Hans Demant, Opel's managing director, did not say which vehicle is best suited for Opel's first hybrid -- but a car with a gasoline-electric powertrain is not far off. "Before the end of the decade, you will see a hybrid application in an Opel," said Demant, during an interview at the Geneva auto show. Saab Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson said a hybrid will likely appear on the next generation of its 9-3 and 9-5 vehicles. "We are part of the development process," Jonsson said. Geneva Preview: More Details Uncovered on Saab Sports Concept Date posted: 02-03-2006 DETROIT — With the Geneva Motor Show less than a month away, Saab insiders have begun to leak additional details about the concept sports car that will be unveiled on March 1. Described as a two-passenger coupe about the size of the Aston Martin DB9, the Saab two-door — which may or may not revive the old Sonett badge — is said to be a pure concept. Contrary to widespread speculation, it is not based on any existing General Motors platform and, unfortunately for Saab aficionados, there appear to be no immediate plans for production. However, Saab executives say the concept is signif…

Spied: 2008 Saab 9-3 These two photos are the ones that give us the most insight into what we'll be looking at with the MY2008 Saab 9-3 range. I've got to say, the first impression is bloody striking and just magnificent. This is just the aggressive look the 9-3 needed. The latest incarnation of the 9-5 was a little divisive (to say the least!) but so far, every reaction to this image that I've read has been totally positive. The Aero-X influence is unmissable and beautifully applied to the car. Not only does the rounded pressing on the hood give the headlamps some aggressive eyebrows, it is also reminiscent of the old clamshell hoods of Saabs past (Vector 220 points o…

With Saab heading into bankruptcy, companies are coming in to snap up pieces of the brand. Hans Bergqvist, the administrator in charge of liquidating Saab told Swedish publication NyTeknik that many companies are interested in Saab's assets. Berggvist did confirmed that one of the companies interested is Youngman Automotive. This should come as no surprise as the company tried to save Saab until the last minute and has invested tens of millions of euros to help pay for wages and taxes. A spokesman for the company said that it was primarily interested in the Phoenix platform that would have underpinned the next-generation 9-3 and possibly other technologies that didn't i…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 20, 2011 If you were thinking about stopping by your nearest Saab dealer to get a steal on a new 9-5, you might want to hear this. Automotive News reports Saab Cars North America issued the following statement: "Warranty coverage is suspended indefinitely for all new Saab vehicles sold. During this period, the warranty booklet must be removed from the owner information packet. For any vehicle sold or leased during this period, the customer should be affirmatively advised that the vehicle does not carry any warranty coverage and is sold 'as is.' Over the last six months, the fate of Saab has become even more of a question than it has been for the last several years. General Motors put the marque up for strategic review last Fall and it was not listed among the company's core brands when it submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Congress in December. With many of its new model introductions being delayed this year, one has to wonder if Saab will just slowly slide off into oblivion. Given the seeming absence of anyone willing to step up and buy the Swedish automaker, that may yet happen. Before that time, though, Saab dealers in Europe will get at least two additions to their product lineup. The 9-3X and the re…

Spyker CEO Says GM Has Responded to New Bid for Saab By Ola Kinnander and Jeroen Molenaar Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller said General Motors Co. has responded to the Dutch sports-car maker’s revised bid for the Saab unit, days after the U.S. carmaker said it will shutter the brand. Saab would still seek a development loan from the European Investment Bank under the new offer, Muller, 50, said today in a telephone interview. The CEO declined to say whether Russian businessman Vladimir Antonov, the chairman and biggest investor in the Zeewolde, Netherlands-based sports-car maker, still has a role in the new bid. Gene…

I dunno why but the other Aero X thread was locked, which sucks. So i wanted to make a thread to post some cool pics of the Aero X and some thoughts about it. I'm sure a lot of people have seen these already, but they're still sweet to look at. Check out that altimeter style speedo...it's sweet. This is what Saab should have, as like a halo car. I mean, it's the only car to really back up the "Born from Jets" slogan. It looks absolutely stunning. I'm sure they won't build it but you know...they could if they really wanted to. Granted, building it off the RWD Corvette platform goes against the FWD tradition of Saab...but you know I think building the Saabar…

Not the greatest image, but you can definitely make out some Saab characteristics in this new CUV. To be based on Epsilon 2 / Theta platform with a 250hp 2.8V6 and turbo charged 300hp version as well. To be made in Mexico and introduced in Spring 2008 as a MY2009 model. This model will spell the end of the 9-7X. Here is the image blown up, gets very pixilated though..

On Wednesday, NEVS AB announced that it has a new owner. Evergrande Group's subsidiary, Evergrande Health, the main investor in Faraday Future, has acquired 51% of the share of NEVS AB. NEVS bought the remnants of SAAB after Spyker, Saab's prior owner, went into bankruptcy. NEVS has been using Saab 9-3 bodies to build electric vehicles for China. They have manufacturing plants in Tianjin China and Trollhättan, Sweden with another under construction in Shanghai China. NEVS AB was founded in 2012 by Kai Johan Jiang when he bought the bankruptcy estate after Saab Automobile. Since then he has been the major owner of the company. Kai Johan Jiang will hold the rema…

Ok sure, the SUV may just be a TrailBlazer underneath, and it may be alienating to loyalists...but c'mon...it looks friggin' cool. I like Saabs recent "Born from Jets" ad campaign, the music, and narrator go well. This just happens to rock cuz the jet transforms into the SUV. I'm sure we've all seen it, but here it is for anyone besides me who really liked it http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=83...aab+9-3&pl=true

GM Press Release FOR RELEASE: 2006-11-17 Sir Richard Branson Gives Green Light to Saab BioPower DETROIT — Move over fossil fuel – that’s just so passé – or that’s the message as the UK ’s most high-profile and best-known businessman Sir Richard Branson takes delivery of a Saab 9-5 BioPower. Sir Richard’s switch to his Saab flex-fuel car, which runs on the eco-friendly and renewable fuel source bioethanol E85 (made from plant products such as wheat and grain), reinforces the Virgin boss’ unwavering commitment to fighting one of the biggest challenges of our times – that of global warming. Saab Sticking With Engine Lineup On 9-4X William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 29, 2011 Saab's upcoming 9-4X crossover will not follow the same path as the Cadillac SRX. Outgoing Saab CEO, Jan Ake Jonsson said in a interview the 9-4X will not offer the 3.6 V6 as the only engine choice for the 9-4X. "No, we will have both engines. GM is going to put a 3.6-litre V6 into the SRX to replace the 2.8-litre turbo V6. We have the option to take that engine too but we haven’t yet decided if we want to do that. So just as we have said previously, we will launch the 9-4X with two V6 engines: a 3.0-litre, and a 2.8-litre turbo." Asked if the 9-4…

The Car Connection on the Saab 9-5 Very nice. I love the nip/tuck that Saab performed on the 2006 9-5's skin. I've never seen anything as menacing as the gouged-out eyes look with the chrome outline. They also performed surgery on the 9-5's interior, structure and powerplant. Is this enough to satisfy the critics of TCC? Read the 2006 Saab 9-5 Review @ The Car Connection

Saab Will Resume Production On Friday William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 26, 2011 Related: Saab Working On Getting Production Back On Track Six weeks. That's how long Saab's production lines in Trollhättan, Sweden stood still. The reason was due to suppliers not getting paid for parts. Those six weeks would cause turmoil in Saab with money running low, loan requests, a partnership with a Chinese automaker falling through, and other problems. However, things are beginning to look up for Saab. They have announced a partnership with Chinese distributor, Pang da Automobile Trade Co., which netted Saab 30 million euros. Now, it looks li…

The Continuing Story of Saab, Part 412.5: Three Ring Circus William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2011 Saab’s goal of getting out bankruptcy is turning very nasty. First, Autocar is reporting the court-appointed administrator placed in charge of the company's reorganization affairs, Guy Lofalk has asked the Swedish court to terminate the automaker's reorganization process. Lofalk doesn’t have enough confidence in Saab getting enough funding to continue with the process. This move would end the Saab’s protection from creditors while it looked for money. Saab is upset with Lofalk’s decision and has applied to the Swedish court to…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 23, 2011 Earlier this week, we reported on which companies were going after Saab's assets, including Youngman Automotive and possibly Turkey. Well, one of Saab's biggest assets has been sold to Youngman. Youngman said yesterday, they had purchased Saab’s “Phoenix” vehicle architecture. Phoenix was a homegrown architecture that would begin underpinning new Saab vehicle, beginning with the new 9-3. The architecture is said not have any relation to any GM based architecture. Rachel Pang, a Youngman Spokesperson told Automotive News China that the firm has already gone through the motions of setting up a firm i…

Saab Building Three New Models With Two Chinese Partners William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com July 5, 2011 Saab has some good news to share with everyone. The company has announced they have signed legally binding deals with Pang Da and Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Company. The agreements will still need to be approved by a host of regulatory bodies and government agencies. But that isn't stopping Saab from working together with their new partners. In a press release released this week, Saab announced a new joint venture with Youngman to build three new Saabs. The three cars will be a compact car called the 9-1, a large SUV called t…

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 28, 2005 DETROIT-- General Motors is considering a crossover vehicle for its Saab brand. GM would base the vehicle on a Cadillac concept and build it on a new, mid-sized crossover architecture. GM will not say when it plans to unveil its concept model of a Cadillac crossover. But the company is thinking of designing a "highly differentiated" version of the Cadillac vehicle for Saab, says Robert Lutz, GM's vice chairman of global product development. The company is examining a business case for the Saab crossover, Lutz said at a press event here this week, by weighing GM's investment against the vehicl…

Automobile mag is reporting that the next Epsilon platform will come in 2 versions. The base version will come with struts fore and aft and FWD only with a more premium version getting controle arms all around and opt AWD! This premium and more flexable next genoration Epsilon platform will be the bases for both the next 9-3 and 9-5 while the base strut suspended version will be used on the Chevy Malibu/Saturn Aura/Opel Vectra ect. With this HOPEFULLY being the case I wonder if the ZETA will be able to be as flexable as the next gen Epsilon in what type of suspension system it can use? That would be good if GM plans to use the ZETA for any future Cadillac or other premium…

GM focusing on Saab revival, sales chief says LaNeve says 'Born from Jets' ad campaign addresses Saab's lack of identity Dee-Ann Durbin / AP Auto Writer ORLANDO, Fla.-- General Motors Corp.'s vice president of sales and marketing said a new ad campaign and fresh vehicles should help the company's luxury Saab brand. "We don't need Saab to do a lot of volume. We just need them to do better than they've done," Mark LaNeve said at a conference sponsored by J.D. Power and Associates. Saab has struggled since GM acquired it in 2000, and sales have been weak. The Swedish automaker posted a 1 percent sales increase in 2005, on par with the industry but down compared to compe…

The midsized sedan has been growing in all directions for decades, but soaring fuel prices have customers begging for something smaller. GM is heeding the call as it is preparing a smaller batch of next generation Saabs. The next 9-3 was originally slated to be underpinned by the Epsilon II, but in March GM decided to instead utilize the lower-medium Delta architecture. The Delta platform will also be used for the next-gen Chevy Cruze, which is slated to eventually replace the Cobalt. The end result will be a smaller, lighter, more efficient Swedish sedan. With the 9-3 shrinking, Saab will also need to down-size its planned 9-1, which was originally scheduled to be Delt…

Linkity Spy shots: 2010 Saab 9-4X up close Saab is close to completing development work on a new midsized crossover based around GM's Theta platform and expected to be revealed for the first time in production late this year for sale in early 2010. To spread development costs, most of the 9-4X's design has been shared with the 2010 Cadillac SRX and both vehicles are tipped to be manufactured at a plant in Ramos, Mexico. The 9-4X will be similar in size to BMW's X5 but pricing should be closer to that of the X3 and Volvo XC60 – two of the Saab crossover's prime targets. According to previous reports, the 9-4X will run a 284hp (209kW) petrol V6 engine mated to a si…
