GM May Add Smaller Saturn Car to Meet Rising Demand Link to Original Article @ Bloomberg June 8 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp.'s Saturn, the fastest-growing brand in the U.S. this year, may add a smaller car because of rising demand for fuel-efficient models. "We think there is definitely room at the bottom for an economy car for Saturn,'' Lisa Hutchinson, the brand's product- development director, said today in an interview in New York. "There is a growing interest in fuel economy as prices have gone up." She didn't say when the division might add the car, known as a subcompact. The Opel Corsa subcompact, one of GM's most popular models in Europe, is a possib…

GM's risky challenge Carmaker bets on showroom face-off with Asian cars Sharon Terlep | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News ANN ARBOR -- A look of disbelief crossed Karen Smith's face as a Saturn salesman handed her the keys to a shiny new Toyota Camry. "Really, go ahead and drive it," he told Smith, who was car shopping for her teenage son. "Try the Honda, too." Off she drove, rolling out of a Saturn dealer's lot in the hot-selling Toyota, her two sons and their grandmother in the car. For the next 15 minutes, the brood weighed the pros and cons of the Camry and the Saturn Aura, from the handling on a tight corner to the arrangement of the instrument panel. …

http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_ne...ext_saturn_aura Nothing in this article that hasn't already been revealed on Cheers & Gears directly, or through other linked articles. This article mainly served to annoy me by: A) getting the build location of the current Aura wrong (they say it's built in Spring Hill, TN instead of Kansas City) B) not clearly labeling their photos as the concept version (it's stated in the article text, but it should be stated under the photo, IMO.) This is especially annoying since we already have seen pretty good spy photos of the production version, and it's notably different from the concept.

7.0l LS7 HSV GTS-R Coming in October Wheels reports that Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) will commemorate its 20th anniversary by unveiling an incredible limited-run musclecar that portends to be Australia's fastest car ever built. While the official name isn't yet know - some predict it will be a combination of two previous heavyweight concepts and be dubbed GTS-R 427 - its confirmed that it will be powered by GM's 7.0l LS7 V8 putting out around 516hp and 478lbft of torque. Expect transmission to be limited to the Corvette Z06's six-speed Tremac unit. Pricing is likely to run between $100-125k AUS, which is about half the price of the BMW M5. 0-60 is expected to match …

Pontiac needs trim levels like chevy that are the same for every vehicle... not a gtp gt gxp and value leader? they need to stay consistant... a ls lt and ss models (obviously not the same as chevy)... and it wouldnt be to bad for pontiac to have a performace stripper edition for the aftermarket or dealership add ons... but if you know, hey if it has trim level XYZ option, its got power windows and an mp3 player..…

I just received my copy of CR, and there was a short review, called a "first look" by CR, of the Outlook in it. For the most part, the review was favorable. The article opens with: "Our early impressions of the new Saturn Outlook crossover indicate that it - and its twin, GMC's Acadia, and cousin, Buick's Enclave, due this summer - might be the most competitive GM product in years." It ends by saying the Outlook "drives almost as well as more upscale models." They did criticize the automatic's behavior on a slight incline. GM said it will issue a software patch for that. CR also criticized the rear blind spot and the hard plastics "evident here and there." ------…

New Saturn Vue helps keep boat trailers, campers under control Enhanced StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control highlights long list of safety equipment Detroit - Hauling summer toys such as personal water craft, campers and all-terrain vehicles is now safer and easier with the Trailer Sway Control program on the new 2008 Saturn Vue. The innovative feature is integrated into the vehicle's standard StabiliTrak system. When the system detects that the trailer is swaying, it applies the vehicle's brakes, independent of the driver applying the brake pedal, to help stabilize the vehicle. The StabiliTrak indicator light will flash on the gage cluster to signal the driver to r…

Pontiac: Relying on G forces Automotive News / August 21, 2006 - 6:00 am G5: Pontiac adds the G5 coupe, an entry-level model built on GM's small-car Delta architecture at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant. The G5 will be priced just under $15,000; sales begin this year. The vehicle is a sibling of the Chevrolet Cobalt coupe. A sedan will not be offered. G6: The G6 is scheduled to be re-engineered and restyled for the 2010 model year on GM's front-wheel-drive Epsilon 2 architecture. Some GM executives want to make all of Pontiac's cars rear-wheel drive. But that strategy has not progressed beyond the talking stages. Grand Prix: GM will discontinue the Grand Prix after the…

2008 Hummer H2 Hummer refines H2 interior, boosts power By RICK KRANZ | AutoWeek | Updated: 06/26/07, 9:57 am et DURANGO, Colo. -- The message for buyers eyeing the 2008 Hummer H2 is twofold: more refinement, more power. Hummer's biggest model undergoes its biggest changes - most on the inside - since it debuted for the 2002 model year. On the outside, the H2's styling gets only minor changes to the grille and lower front bumper. "Customers were looking for refinement on the inside," Hummer General Manger Martin Walsh said this month at a Hummer media event here. The basics: The 2008 H2 SUV and SUT interior is new - instrument panel, door panels, seats, headliner…

http://www.caranddriver.com/shortroadtests...green-line.html Tested: 2007 Saturn Aura Green Line - Short Take Road Tests Sorry, Saturn, but we don’t foresee long lines forming at the dealership for this budget hybrid. BY JARED GALL, May 2007 Strolling to the parking lot to hop into the Aura at the end of the day, we noticed our Aura Green Line was red. A red Green Line? How about a Red Green line: “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.” The Red Green Show was a Canadian parody of home-improvement and outdoor shows that ran on CBC and PBS from 1991 to 2006. Main character Red Green was known for his nuggets of humble wit. What wou…

Well, time finally ran out. I was hoping to hold out until the Astra came out before trading my '03 Ion but the repair bills were starting to mount. The interior was showing a lot of wear early on but in the last year I've been overwhelmed with mechanical problems totaling almost $2000. That car was just not very well put together. I've seen a lot of drooling over horsepower and size but it seems no one at GM wants to build the car I want to buy. I need a small sedan that gets decent fuel economy and is comfortable without costing an arm and a leg. Not wanting to wait any longer I drove the current Ion drawn in by a 0% interest offer. It really isn't much better …

Holden in the Red Again VE launch, slow sales, exchange rates, VZ discounts and job cuts cost Holden $146.5m By JAMES STANFORD 15 June 2007 | Link to Original Article @ GoAuto GM Holden has posted a $146.56 million loss for the 2006 calendar year. It is the second consecutive red-ink result for the Australian car-maker, which lost $144.6 million in 2005. Holden said the 2006 result was affected by the launch costs associated with the VE Commodore and the WM Statesman and Caprice, while a substantial amount of the 2005 loss was attributed to development costs for the VE Commodore launched last August. It added that because the new Commodore and Statesman/Caprice were…

"A Modern Parable A Japanese company (Toyota ) and an American company (General Motors decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile. The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing. Feeling a deeper study was in order, American man…

I got this email yesterday for an anniversary car show at the Pontiac dealer I got the G6 at. Now they say that the H3T concept will be there. From what I can remember, the H3T concept was a black two-door, not a red four door that would look awfully like the 2009 production truck. So, there is either a H3T concept 4-door I don't remember, someone did a photoshop pic for this Pontiac dealer to use, or they mistakenly used a pre-production pic of the real H3T. Party on.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...rticleId=120836 Road Tests Full Test: 2008 Saturn Vue XR Taking in the Vue By Donna DeRosa, Managing Editor Date posted: 05-17-2007 Saturn sent the 2008 Vue to European finishing school and it came back unrecognizably well-groomed. Derived from the Opel Antara, the 2008 Vue looks nothing like its former boxy self, plus it has a serious new personality to match. No Longer a Wallflower The 2008 Saturn Vue has the same 106.6-inch wheelbase as before, but it's a little wider and a little taller. More important, the curvaceous new bodywork has a clean, polished Euro-style look, especially in the Polar White of our test vehic…

I saw a G6 hardtop with the top down in traffic today. Looking at the driver's side, all was fine, it looked pretty good, when I got over in the right turn lane, I got a pretty good look at the passenger side, thats when something caught my eye. There was a huge gap between the fender and the trunk lid right behind the back seat. Not a normal panel gap, a rather large panel gap, one that wasn't there on the driver's side. Basically, This pic: is quite representative of how the driver's side looked, the passenger side had a massive gap (appeared to be almost an inch) in the circled area:

This brief image gallery will bring to you a glimpse of the design work on the Holden VE range (Berlina, Omega, Calais, Commodore, Statesman, and other associated models), which began in the year 1999 and ended around 2003. The Holden VE range has become something of a word car since it's 2006 introduction; forming the basics of the Pontiac G8, which reintroduces the concept of a V8 engine and rear-drive in a mainstream Pontiac sedan, and the Buick Park Avenue, which is currently a China-only product that has quickly risen to the status of being one of the most luxurious Buicks built in the last few years. Not to mention the Chevrolet versions sold in the Middle East. Soo…

I will say this, if looks have anything to do with sales success, then this thing will succeed. It looks great. On the outside. What about the inside? Well, mostly the same types of impressions. I can confirm this, the black interior I saw through the window maybe looked like the plastics quality could stand to be a LITTLE bit nicer. The design of the dash and sweep of the doors looked really nice though. It looked as if the center stack and console were quite nice, despite the par…

The last Fairlane/LTD will be built either late in 2007 or early 2008, ahead of the arrival of the heavily-revised Falon - codenamed Orion - around March 2008. This leaves the Holden Statesman and Caprice as the only locally produced models in this market segment. link to drive.com.au article

I really like it, and this as a lifelong Pontiac fan (I've owned 7 so far, wife has owned 2). The 2nd Arrowhead features fine upward-angled lines in the background- hopefully they show up well in the pic. Looks very sharp, and for what is in reality quite minor in revision; very fresh. I'd green-light it first thing Monday morning. Sorry for the moire' in the scan- my software has no provision for counter-acting this. The pic is from an G8 article in Smoke Signals, the monthly magazine of the Pontiac-Oakland Club International. Enjoy.

Holden is offering your money back if you don't like its new Epica mid-sized car, the cheapest six-cylinder car on the market. During 2007, private buyers who purchase the Korean-made replacement for the Vectra will be able to hand it back within 30 days and fewer than 1500 kilometres on the odomoter if they are dissatisfied with the vehicle. There are, of course, various terms and conditions, including ensuring the car is undamaged. Plus, you have to provide proof you have purchased (or will purchase) a new vehicle of equal or greater value than the Epica you're handing back. drive.com.au

Those of you who "know" me, but don't necessarily love me (LOL), know how I drool over the Intrigue. As for as Olds goes, it was the best of the old and the best of the new. It really was their finest hour, and that saddens me. Here's a compendium of Intrigues I've gotten to "live in." There were more, but here are those I have photographed. 1998 Intrigue - 3800 V6 Location: Northern California, toward Lake Tahoe, US 50 near Echo Summit Comment: far and away, my favorite color for the car 1998 Intrigue - 3800 V6 Location: Portland, OR, in front of Mom's Comment: what a day! I was trying to figure out why the new Saturns aren't selling very well, and it occurred to me that the answer is more or less pretty obvious: People aren't used to going to Saturn to buy a family sedan or big family SUV/crossover. They also aren't used to going to Saturn to buy a roadster, but the SKY is so sexy people have taken notice. People are only used to going to Saturn to buy small cars and small SUVs/crossovers. Now, here is my theory: If the Aura was named "Intrigue," "Alero," or "Cutlass" it would be selling much better and the same goes for the Outlook if it were named Bravada (under the Olds name). Now, do I think eventually people will start associatin…

Hummer H3 to spawn ute, V8, diesel versions With help from GM, Hummer will expand with smaller vehicles and more engines By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS 16 April 2007 Link to Original Article @ GoAuto HUMMER will consolidate its upcoming H3 range in Australia from 2009 with a variety of new models that will include a compact SUV, diesel, ethanol and hybrid power, and a new full-sized H2. Central to this will be engineering and design input from General Motors’ global outposts, including Holden, but perhaps Hummer’s most ambitious plan involves a vehicle that sits below the H3 – currently the company’s smallest offering. Known as the H4 – although this may change by the time i…

............. "The third model in the Aura line mates the best sedan in the brand’s history to a more efficient drivetrain than the 200-plus-hp 3.5- and 3.6-liter V6s found in Aura XE and XR models and gives buyers an alternative to hybrid versions of Toyota’s Camry, Honda’s Accord and Nissan’s Altima. Each of those competitors is more powerful than the Aura, but the Saturn’s base price is more than $2,000 less than the Nissan, the next-cheapest hybrid sedan on the market." ...... http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti.../THISWEEKSISSUE

Actually, this guy is a neighbor of my inlaw's. I have been admiring his spotless black GTO from a distance whenever I went over. It's a 6.0L with scoops, but it's not the Sport Appearance package grille-wise. This car has single-handedly made me slowly appreciate the GTO's styling- it's slick and thoroughly modern- which is not something I usually gravitate to. Like I said- the car is flawless and sticks out in a rough urban neighborhood with narrow streets (he street-parks it- no driveways for many houses). Saw him checking his oil this morning and I stomped on over. Told him I liked it, asked if he had done any mods to it. "Only flashed the computer, but I'm going t…

GM HOLDEN is well advanced on a hybrid system in Australia, as well as a diesel engine program, both of which could slot into the current VE Commodore and other rear-wheel drive vehicles it is developing for General Motors around the world. GM Holden chairman and managing director Denny Mooney revealed these facts last week in the wake of comments by GM’s vice-chairman of global product development Bob Lutz that the American auto giant had placed its future RWD programs on hold. Mr Mooney said Holden engineers were working on the two-mode petrol-electric hybrid system derived from the billion-dollar alliance forged between GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW. The first hybrid…

A blast from the past! Weekend production at GM Holden’s Elizabeth plant in Adelaide came to a grinding halt this morning as hundreds of giant Yabbies took over the factory floor. Bemused factory workers could do nothing but run as the fast moving horde overran the factory. The crustacean, known locally as ‘Chazwazzes’, are thought to have come from a dam near the plant that supplies Holden with water for it’s foundry works. GM Holden Chairman Denny Mooney, who was visiting the plant at the time, said it was the strangest occurrence he has ever seen. “Wild creatures shutting down an auto plant?! That's pretty strange, even by US standards, and I should know” said M…

No turbodiesel at first; engine may be available later Link to Original Article @ Detroit Free Press | By Mark Phelan | March 29, 2007 Highway cruising over 100 m.p.h. with fuel economy exceeding 37 m.p.g. Detroit to Chicago and back -- 566 miles -- on considerably less than a tank of fuel. Is this heaven? No, it's the Opel Astra 1.9 CDTI, powered by GM Europe's latest turbodiesel. The fuel-efficient and powerful 1.9-liter turbodiesel in the Astra I recently tested in Europe won't make it across the Atlantic this year, but it may be in the brand's future. The 2008 Saturn Astra that hits dealerships late this year will have a 140-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder g…

I checked out some Saturns earlier today and I have to say I like what I saw. But I have a couple of questons that I wasn't able to ask the "knowledgeable salespeople", mainly because the dealership was closed. So youse guys will have to indulge me here: 1. The Aura XEs on the lot had two different EPA fuel economy ratings in spite of (apparently) being equipped with the same powertrain. About half the cars were rated at 20/29 MPG, while the other half had 20/30 MPG ratings. They had similar option loads and the sticker showed the 3.5L VVT & 4-speed ATX in all cases. OK, so it's only one MPG, but I'm just curious where the difference in the rating might be coming …

Spied: 2008 Hummer H3 SUT This prototype is a lot more than an H3 with its rear cargo bay hacked open. It looks as if this prototype has a longer wheelbase (and is therefore longer overall) than a normal H3. Where the rear wheel well cuts into the rear door opening on today's H3 SUV, the rear doors on this H3 SUT prototype have no such intrusion. The rear wheels have been pushed farther toward the rear, allowing the rear door cutline to drop straight down to the frame rail. It appears that the extra length has been added to make the truck bed a more useful size. Read "Spy Shots: 2008 HUMMER H3 SUT" @ The Car Connection

H1: sadly it will be soon no longer with us.. H2: a new H2 is due for 2008/09 so id make no changes to the current model. except maybe add the 6.5L turbo diesel as an option.. H3: id consider offering a V6 and/or a small V8.. the current 3.5L inline 5 is just not powerful enough for this vehicle.. although ive heard for 07 it is getting a slight HP bump. what id like to know if it would be possible to shoehorn the 4.8L V8 in the H3?? another option would be adding a supercharger or a turbocharger to the current 3.5L.. H4: this would be a small jeep wrangler type vehicle, it would be offered in two door convertible, and four door hardtop.. it would be based on a s…

I bought a new 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP today. As many of you know I am not a big fan of Holden, so I doubt if I would ever buy a G8. So I thought about buying this GXP since before I left for Australia last week for work. Well yesterday I got back, and I had a long plane ride to think about it. So today I drove to my dealer and made the deal. I pick it up Tuesday. What made me decide to get this one is, it was built in Oshawa 2 before they start moving everything to Oshawa 1, and I think as time goes on, W cars will become classics that represent a certain time in GM history, and the W platform was important in bridging the gap for GM before Zeta came online. I wi…

The Drive Team, The Sydney Morning Herald, 15/12/06 Holden has told its dealers that the new VE model's wheels won't fit old Commodores. Holden VE Commodore: production line at the Elizabeth factory in Adelaide. When Holden introduced the all-new VE Commodore in August it changed some crucial dimensions of the wheel-locating system. This was done to avoid confusion on the production line (as the Holden factory will be building both new and old models for some time yet) and to cope with the new Commodore's extra weight, width and grip levels. Holden sent the following statement to Drive on Wednesday: "Fitting VE wheels onto a VZ [or earlier model Commodore] is not …

Look to her left and you'll see what I'm talking about - a yellow, Hummer-looking concept vehicle. http://www.skyroadster.com/forums/attachme...54&d=1165389800 Is that old news that I missed, or is this a first time showing? I'm sure it's just some design exercise.

I was headed to the beach last week and passed a convertible on the highway. Now being the observant person I am (when it comes to cars anyway) I got a look at the back of the car as I approached to pass. I caught a glimpse of the badge on the rear and though "that looks like the Opel emblem." It was dark though and I figured I just didn't see it right. So a couple miles later the car catches back up with me so I slow down to get a better look. Black convertible, top down. Left hand drive and sure enough, the badge on the rear of the car is the Opel badge and it says Astra on the trunk lid! Unfortunately before my co-pilot could grab his camera they got off the hi…

A guy I know from another automotive forum works for a company that does dyno tuning. They just got a beta release of the software that allows them to custom modify the engine management code in Holden's Alloy Tech V6, otherwise known as GM's HFV6. To test the software, he decided to play with his wife's Commodore VZ Ute (fitted with a stock, base level 175kw/230 hp engine). Rolled onto the dyno, with its stock engine management settings, it produced 167 rear wheel HP running on 91 octane (that's 91 RON octane, roughly the same as 87 RON+MON/2 octane available in the US). He then proceeded to play with the software to change the fuel and ignition, and later tweaked the…

Saturn Aura Green Line The Lowest Priced Hybrid; starts at $22,695 Certified for $1,300 Tax Credit Receives official EPA ratings of 28 mpg city/35 mpg highway Detroit -- Saturn announced today that the new 2007 Aura Green Line hybrid’s MSRP will start at $22,695 (including destination charge), making it the lowest-priced hybrid on the market for 2007. In addition to its value-focused price, the Internal Revenue Service has certified that Aura Green Line buyers will qualify for a tax credit of $1,300. “The Aura Green Line is a great value among the hybrids in the mid-size car segment,” said Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak. “With a starting sticker price over …

Tell me what you think of these, and please feel free to save them! Make sure you tell me what you think of them, this is very close to the production verison and I am loving the color! ENJOY!

Contrary to some people reporting there are no plans to bring the G8 To North America the opposite is quite true. At least according to Bob. Bob Lutz has stated the following and it answers some of our questions on where and why. "The G8 will be assembled in Australia by GM's Holden subsidiary. But it could be built on this continent". "It is highly likely that as we move to higher volumes for the global rear-drive architecture, we will begin to produce" in North America, said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. "Importing from Australia at this point is a transitional phase. It permitted us to get the car quickly and for a minimum of investment." Also quoted by John Lar…
