10 Speed Automatics Coming To Hyundai, Kia Vehicles William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 29, 2011 Currently, the highest amount of gears you can get in a vehicle is eight speeds. But Hyundai and Kia are looking to change that. Sources tell Bloomberg that Hyundai and Kia are working together on developing a new ten speed automatic, which could come out by 2014. Bloomberg also reports that Hyundai's president Park Seong Hyon said the new gearbox will likely be used in the Genesis and Equus. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)

This photo clearly shows that the 2008 Equus will use a rear-wheel-drive configuration when it debuts roughly two years from now. This angle also gives a good indication of this vehicle's size. With a wheelbase of 116 inches, the Equus is nearly as big as a Mercedes S-Class between the wheels. Unless you've visited Korea lately, you've probably never heard of the Hyundai Equus. It's Hyundai's largest, most luxurious sedan, but since its debut in 1999 it's been a domestic market sedan only. That may change in the coming years as the 2008 Hyundai Equus is being designed with U.S. sales in mind. Our latest spy photos show an Equus sedan that's bigger and …

I saved the best for last. In a strange twist to get people to look at the Hyundai tent (I assume), A camoflauged 2008 VeraCruz mule pulled into the Barrie Auto Show. Several of the students (its a student run show), scrambled to find out what was going on. I heard one say "does head office know that thing is here!?" The small SUV prototype was driven by a husband and wife team, with a small child. Kris started snapping pics as soon as we spotted it. As we approached, the lady said that if we wanted to have a look inside, we'd better hurry. The glass was deep tinted. Later in the day, a security guard was posted to the vehicle. Chris Doane, eat your heart out!

Most of you probably seen this already, but I don't see anyone have posted it, so I am going to now. It has been on Youtube for quite some time now so.... It wasn't uploaded by me but.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZk_VVXaKQE To me, it looks the same old, same old s*** that Hyundai has been making. Just to translate, the last words that that is spoken in Korean saids "Evolution beyond change, Sonata, Transform". Lame line but oh well.... Aside from the uglier grill, larger projector headlamps, and the new interior, I don't think it looks much different, it won't be easy to tell the difference if we were to see the 09 on the street. Still, ugly as sh**, but …

Are You The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 30, 2011 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Gallery Related: Hyundai Goes 2 For 2: 2 Coupes For 2 Auto Shows Hyundai is busy finishing up the refreshed 2013 Genesis coupe. The company says the coupe will have a “more dramatic” design. Judging from some pictures posted at the GenCoupe.com fourm, it's very dramatic in in a good/bad way. The pictures show the Genesis Coupe's front end sharing the same hexagonal shaped grill from the new Veloster. The front end also has new front headlights and unique hood louvers. Are You The Hyundai Veloster Turbo's Engine? *UPDATED* William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 22, 2011 Since the Hyundai Veloster has come out, the rumor of a more powerful turbocharged engine has been running around. This week, Hyundai has announced a new turbocharged 1.6L I-4 and this could be the rumored Veloster turbo. The new Gamma 1.6T GDI engine, as Hyundai calls it, should be good for 204 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque from 1750 to 6000 rpm. Like the 1.6L GDI currently in the Veloster, the 1.6T takes advantage of gasoline direct-injection to help boost efficiency and lower emissions. Hyundai says the new engine will meet bo…

Hyundai's House of Pain David Kiley | Link to Original Article @ BusinessWeek Hyundai is definitely a brand with growing pains. The Korean company has taken a hard, and embarrassing step in idling its Alabama assembly plant an additional week. The truth is that the company has been parking cars on the fence at the factory all year long. That means they have been building thousands of cars at a time with no dealer orders for them. Hyundai makes the Sonata sedan and Santa Fe crossover at the plant. The Sonata is most of the problem. A very good car, in my opinion. But the competition in the mid-sized sedan market is brutal, especially in a softening market. My God. To…

Burgeoning Beauty vs. Proven Performer http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...otopanel..1.*#4 The list of six-cylinder sport coupes that actually matter is a short one. Let's face it, until now it's been BMW 335i and Infiniti G37. And then, about two weeks ago, Hyundai dropped a bomb. A big one. It's called the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. And all of a sudden, the Korean carmaker — whose previous attempts at "sporty" included machines like the unenviable Scoupe and the forgettable first-generation Tiburon — has thrust itself into the spotlight with a car that at once looks good and has the specs to do the deed. Three hundred horsepower. Six-speed manual tr…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 14, 2013 Hyundai's showing for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show was a very unique concept named the HCD-14 Genesis. While the concept isn't quite the real deal, it gives us some clues of what to expect. The overall design is very much a classic concept car with a almost vertical front end, large grille, and rear-hinged doors. Aside from those dream features, the HCD-14 does feature some design cues that might end up on the next Genesis like hard-edged body creases running along the side of the car and the coupe-like roofline running all the way to the end of vehicle. Other features to take note are a heads-up displ…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 7, 2013 We're a week away from the start of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and automakers are beginning to tease us with their showings. Today Hyundai has released a teaser shot of their HCD-14 Concept which the automaker says gives a "glimpse into future Hyundai premium vehicle design, advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls, and spirited driving dynamics." The teaser shot shows a unique, sloping roofline that is very reminiscent of an Audi A7. We'll have more on the HCD-14 Concept next week. Hyundai Accent excels in quality, styling, safety and price By Paul & Anita Lienert With its latest redesign for model year 2006, Hyundai's Accent leaps into the upper ranks of the subcompact class. Loads of standard amenities, outstanding safety gear, excellent quality, a long warranty and a contemporary design are among the car's virtues. The downside: The Accent could still use a bit more power and a little more rear-seat room. We tested a nicely equipped '06 Accent GLS sedan with a sticker price of $14,870. SHE: I was on the phone with a librarian this morning, and we got to chatting about cars. One of the first questions she asked me was, "So what do you dr…

Edmunds Evaluation: 2007 Hyundai Accent What is the Hyundai Accent SE? After a week behind the wheel, it does not strike us as a cheap car. It's roomy, solid, well equipped, and offers a decent dollop of true driving fun. Plus there's that Hyundai 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, along with its EPA-estimated fuel economy of 32 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. If you're in the market for a cheap — no, make that "affordable" — vehicle, what's not to like? Edmunds

"Koreans are never satisfied," said Shi Hong Choe. "We are always working, always improving. If I see something out of place, I cannot rest until it's corrected." It's employees like Mr. Choe, Hyundai's senior vice president of vehicle test and development, who are enabling the Korean automaker to challenge the Japanese Big Three — Toyota, Honda and Nissan — one carefully engineered new model at a time. Hot on the heels of the successful redesign of the midsize Sonata is Hyundai's new flagship sedan, the 2006 Hyundai Azera. Replacing the outgoing Hyundai XG350, the Azera is a modern sedan that should allow Mr. Choe to rest easie…

We've watched with a sense of awe as Hyundai has gone from a discount also-ran brand into a genuine industry powerhouse in startlingly short order. But we've also long suspected that its vehicles have gained so much ground by being among the best values in their respective segments – not because they've necessarily been the best vehicles to drive. The addition of the Genesis Coupe may have served notice that Hyundai isn't content to just be the industry's value leader (see Battle of the Sixes), but the keystone draw of most of the brand's offerings has remained their affordability. Which is not to suggest this is a bad thing – Hyundai's steroidal growth speaks to the inhe…

Since being exposed on a regular basis to Hyundai cars, something has come to light. The bumper covers are very thin plastic. Where the bumper cover attaches to the car there is a flange with holes that snap into a plastic bracket that is bolted to the fenders and quarter panels. The bumper cover comes to a point in that area... and an automatic car wash tends to grab hold of that point and break the bumper cover away from the car at the thin flange. It is a very common problem, I'm finding... including my cousin's Accent. I saw her over Xmas, and hers is broken. She thought she was responsible for hitting something, but I knew right away what happened. And they ca…

Hyundai has scored a big marketing win with its incentive program that allows owners to return a new Hyundai within a year if they lose their job. Called the Hyundai Assurance program, the South Korean automaker sweetened the deal later by offering to pay up to three months of car payments before taking the car back so that owners would have time to look for a new job. While the rest of the auto industry has been hit with slumping sales in 2009, Hyundai sales were up in January and about even in February compared with 2008. Some of that certainly has to do with the peace of mind provided by the Hyundai Assurance program. But an incentive program isn't successful just be…

I think a gent who takes his kid to the same D/C I do works for Hyundai. He's always showing up with some Hyundai and special mfr. plates. Well, the other day he had a brand new Azera. In the limited bit of time I got to scope it out, here's what I thought. exterior-uninspiring. A very droopy, melted butter look and the rear fender flares seemed contrived, IMHO. Nothing about the face or tail was particularly standout. The overal shape was lacking of any sort of eyecatching ways. As a blandmobile, its not anything great either. interior-appeared to be spacious. The seats themselves looked to be of high quality leather and nice to look at and sit in. Of course…

Hyundai drops minivan plans Automaker will concentrate on SUV, sport wagon By Charles Child Automotive News / August 26, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsId=13153 Hyundai Motor America has dropped plans to sell a traditional minivan next year. Hyundai wants to “stay appropriately differentiated from other brands.” The unibody SUV, about the same size as a Honda Pilot, will go into production in late 2006. The minivan, dubbed the Ent…

Hyundai Monthly Cash Back Ok, so I've been hyper-critical of GM for consistently resorting to putting cash on the hood of just about every model, but Hyundai has finally topped them. Hyundai buyers can now opt to receive a monthly check (for 6 months) from the company in lieu of rebates. If you buy a Veracruz, your cut is $650/month, on a Sonata its $500, on the Accent and Elantra Touring (which I didn't even know existed) its $250. I have a feeling people will buy into this (just like they bought into Hyundai Assurance) but will probably end up regretting it. After six months, you'll still have to make payments on the sticker price (or close to it, depends on how d…

To help pay for the launch of the mid-sized sedan, Hyundai officials say they are boosting the company's media spending by as much as 40 percent in 2006. "We know we have a job to do with a new name, a new product, in a new segment for us," said Michelle Cervantez, Hyundai's vice president of marketing. "We want to make sure consumers understand that this is a Hyund…

Hyundai Looking to be the Safety King It would seem that way anyway. Hyundai recently announced that they expect to sell 350,000 vehicles with standard electronic stability control for the 2007 model year. That would be more than Lexus, Audi, Infiniti and any other luxury brand. Though that is commendable, it isn't particularly impressive. You're comparing sales of a volume brand to sales of traditionally lower-volume brands; I'd expect the volume brand to sell more. Kudos to Hyundai for making ESC standard, though. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 15, 2012 The Hyundai Genesis went through a mid-cycle refresh last year which brought forth a new 5.0L V8, R-Spec package, and other items. However, we've learned from Hyundai that 2013 will bring more changes to the Genesis sedan. Starting off with powertrains, the 4.6L Tau V8 which was the Genesis' only V8 engine until last year will be dropped. Also saying farewell is the standard 5.0L V8 model, meaning you want the V8, you'll need to step up to the R-Spec model. All other Genesis sedans will use the 3.8L V6. Hyundai is also upgrading the Genesis' interior tech by including its Blue Link suite of telematics se…

Hyundai chose the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario to debut the all new 2018 Accent. Why Toronto and not Chicago a week before? You only need to look at the sales numbers to find the reason why. In 2016, the Nissan Versa soundly beat the Hyundai Accent by a margin of 52,448 vehicles (132,214 for Versa vs. 79,766 for the Accent) in the U.S. Over in Canada, the Accent is the best selling model in the class with 19,198 models sold last year. The Honda Fit which was the second best-selling model in the class only moved 8,622 models. You might mistake the Accent sedan for the Elantra. This is due to the Accent's new front and rear end styling looking l…

This morning in South Korea, Hyundai unveiled the 2018 Kona subcompact crossover. This is a big deal for the Korean automaker as it is the brand's first subcompact crossover. The Kona stands out from Hyundai's other crossovers thanks a polarizing design. Up front, the Kona features Hyundai's new mesh grille that debuted on the 2018 Sonata. The split headlights resemble those found on the Jeep Cherokee. A slim vent above the grille, flared out fenders with cladding, and a two-tone roof finish off the design. “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled …

Hyundai had a bit of surprise last night for journalists at the first drive event for the 2019 Santa Fe. They unveiled a refreshed 2019 Elantra sedan. The company's designers really had a thing for triangles since there are a lot on the Elantra's front end. The headlights and cutouts in the front bumper are of the three-sided variety. The large grille appears to be borrowed from the Nexo hydrogen crossover. Around back, the Elantra takes the idea of a smoothed-out trunk lid from the Sonata. Inside, Hyundai only makes some minor changes with a new center stack design and updated trim pieces. SEL models and above will get a number of active safety features such as b…

Last week, Hyundai released images of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata sedan, but was scant with the technical details. Today, Hyundai revealed that the 2020 Sonata will ride on a new Third-Generation platform designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and driving performance. The platform underpinning the 2020 Sonata will eventually find its way into other products. On the safety front, the platform uses super high tensile steel, hot stamping, and a multi-load path structure. The Multi-load path helps in a collision by increasing the amount of energy absorbed by the structure and reduces intrusions into the passenger cabin. In a small frontal overlap crash, the tires are des…

Hyundai is planning on 23 electric vehicles for the global market between now and 2025. A key part of that is the Ioniq sub-brand which the brand previewed last year. The first model of this new brand was introduced this morning in South Korea. The Ioniq 5 is a compact 'crossover' that looks nearly identical to the 45 concept shown two years ago. Details such as edgy hatchback shape with creases along the doors, square headlights, flush door handles, and a set of 20-inch aero wheels are sure to draw a lot comment. Dimension-wise, the Ioniq 5 occupies an interesting space. Length: 182.5 inches (about two inches longer than the Elantra) Width: 74.4 inches…

It is surprising to think it has been over six years since Hyundai first showed the Santa Cruz pickup concept at the Detroit Auto Show. But today, Hyundai has unveiled the production version. The automaker isn't calling this a truck, instead using the term "Sport Adventure Vehicle". To us, it's a truck. We need to start with a bit of a reality check. The Santa Cruz is not a direct competitor to the likes of Chevrolet Colorado, Honda Ridgeline, or Toyota Tacoma in terms of measurements. Compared to those models, the Santa Cruz is around 10 to 17 inches shorter in length. Overall height is around 3 to 4 inches shorter. The bed measures 4.3 feet, which is about foot sho…

Today at the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled an update to its little truck, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. At the New York Auto Show this week, Hyundai unveiled the 2025 Hyundai Tuscon. Inside, Hyundai made the interior more open and airy with a new, lower-height dashboard featuring a panoramic gauge and infotainment screen. Back in June, we reported Hyundai was planning a coupe version of the Elantra to be shown at this month’s LA Auto Show. Well, someone at Automotive.com caught some pictures of what is presumed to be the Elantra coupe. At first, it looks like a Honda Civic coupe wearing some covers. But look a little closer and you’ll begin to notice swoopy roofline and the wheels borrowed from the Veloster, telling you this is a Hyundai. The doors on this mule have been extended and roofline goes further down then the sedan. No details have been released regarding the coupe’s engine, transmission or price tag. It’s assumed the sedan’s 1.8L 148 HP four-cylinder lives under the hood and w…

The Hyundai Elantra is one of the highest rated vehicles in it's class for MPG, with the car receiving an EPA rating of 29 City/40 Highway. But many people can't seem to match the EPA rating and that has caused a consumer group to take action. Consumer advocacy group Consumer Watchdog announced this week that it will be urging the EPA to re-test the Elantra due to complaints from consumers about the MPG. “The Elantra has attracted an unusual number of consumer complaints about real-world mpg averaging in the mid-20s, far from Hyundai’s stated average of 33,” said Consumer Watchdog in a statement. Hyundai rates the Elantra at 33 MPG combined. However, reviewers and peop…

Hyundai and Kia are in a unique position. The two companies compete with each other in many segments even though the two are under the same roof. Despite the inevitable sales cannibalization arising from this, the two have enjoyed remarkable growth in recent years. But this leads to a question; should Hyundai and Kia stay where they're at or should they try to differentiate themselves? Well the two companies will do both. Hyundai and Kia find in themselves in a bit of legal trouble. Last week, the law firm Hagens Berman filed a class-action lawsuit against the Korean automakers over an alleged defect on two engines; the 2.4L four-cylinder and turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder from the Theta II family. The defect in question is a flaw in the engine design that “restricts or blocks oil flow to the engine’s moving parts, such as connecting rod bearings, prematurely wearing out those parts to the point that the engine parts seize, which stops engine operation while running. Engine seizure often causes internal parts, such as the connecting rods, to break and knock a hole in the engine, per…

Hyundai has been seeing its sales declined as it doesn't have enough crossovers and SUV to feed the growing demand by consumers. This, in turn, is causing profits to drop, making investors disappointed. Because of this Hyundai is going crazy with cutting costs. Brandon Ramirez, a spokesman for Hyundai confirmed the cancellation of the diesel during a first drive event of the Palisade in South Korea. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 13, 2012 Hyundai could reach 700,000 vehicles sold by the end of the year, despite tight vehicle supplies due to Hyundai's cap on global production. Hyundai Chairman Chung Mong-koo has been on crusade for better quality vehicles. One of his moves to improve it was to put a cap on production. On one hand, that's a good move to have better quality. On the other hand, Hyundai is “literally selling cars off the transporters” to meet demand. In early March, Hyundai had 55,000 vehicles in dealer inventory. Last week we reported on a teaser that Hyundai sent out about it's upcoming hydrogen truck concept. Today, it's here. Meet the HDC-6 Neptune, a Class-8 semi-truck that runs on hydrogen fuel cells. Hyundai says that fuel cells are a better fit for long haul driving than batteries due to the lower refueling time, higher range, and higher payload. The styling of the concept is inspired by the Art Deco designs by Henry Dreyfuss of the New York Central railroad in the 1930s. The fuel cell powertrain gave Hyundai the opportunity to change the classic layout of a Class-8 truck. They took the technical requirements and found new ways to combine form and function. For exam…

After launching a number of teasers and doing a slow drip of information, Hyundai has finally revealed the Ioniq to the South Korean marketplace. This new technology can read the driver's behavior and incorporate the driving style into the cruise control's system. It incorporates artificial intelligence with advanced driver assistant system that is essential to self-driving technology. Hyundai has announced that is has developed the world's first road noise countering active noise control system. While active noise control is available in many makes and models, it is limited to when the noise is constant and predictable. Hyundai's new system is able to analyze noise at a much faster pace. The digital sound processor can respond to a noise in 0.002 seconds. Cabin microphones constantly monitor road noise and then the speaker system emits sound waves that cancel out drone or engine roughness. Hyundai says they are able to decrease cabin noise by up to 3dB. That means that noise is cut nearly in half as compared to running without RANC. In EVs that…
