I would like some input as to what should be included in a review template for any car write ups that we do as a site. Please also offer your opinions on article formatting, points, systems, photography standards, etc.

Those of you with us long enough know that we've always had server issues. In the past we've financed server moves through donations. We have decided it is time to offer a Premium subscription for $12 annually. Those of you who opt not to subscribe will see no changes other than the following: Standard plan: Free Number of seconds between searches has changed from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. Edit time restriction (in minutes) has changed from unlimited to 15 minutes. The reason for this is these are two areas that directly effect server performance. Premium plan: $15/annually Everything currently available to a standard member: Number of seconds between searches has…

Asians oversell horsepower Toyota, Honda inflated claims of engine muscle; new tests force automakers to come clean with buyers. By Jeff Plungis / Detroit News Washington Bureau Sealing the deal When you’re trying to decide between two similar vehicles, what factor is most likely to sway your opinion? WASHINGTON -- After years of touting ever higher horsepower numbers to win new customers, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and possibly other automakers are now backtracking on some of those claims. Strict new tests developed by the industry's top engineering group are prompting the carmakers to roll back horsepower estimates on several key vehicl…

Since the site re-launched under Josh there has been no curse filter on the site. That is ok sometimes but come on guys if we want to attract new members we are going to have to act like adults. Case in point: http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...st=0&p=156631 to quote: That is not office talk. It is certainly not profesional and would likely make people think less of you in the real world. Most of the forums I frequent, CZ28 and even GMI, keep this to a minimum. Partly because they have curse filtering, which I know people can get around using symbols, and partly because the mods just don't stand for it. I think if C&G wants to really be taken …

As of today there are some changes being made to the forums. Nothing earth shattering, but it should help organize topics a bit. Product Questions and Reviews Located in the C&G Tech Corner, this is where members can post questions, comments and reviews about Auctions and Classifieds This is where all of those eBay, Craigslist, and any other classified ad can go It's located under C&G Social Central. Off Topic News Located as a subforum of The Lounge, any news that isn't car related can go here. Finally, Rated R and Politics will be opened to all members. However, non-subscribers will have to consult with an admin to get permission to enter them. …

Nissan to Stop Building Quest, Armada and Infiniti QX56 Link to Kicking Tires Nissan has announced that it will stop producing the Quest minivan, Armada and full-size SUV and its Infiniti sibling the QX56 when the Mississippi factory they’re made in switches to building commercial vehicles in early 2010. The company has confirmed it will build not said if it will build future versions of the slow-sellers they just don't know where. The only word from Nissan is that final decisions have not been made, but there is the “intention” to build them. “When we get to the end of each vehicle's cycle, we look at the market,” a spokesperson said. Under New Ownership! Avant1963 and I came to an agreement over the weekend where my company, Pittsburgh Living LLC, has purchased Cheers and Gears. Avant1963 will continue in an admin role for as long as he chooses. I have been a member of this site since 2003. In 2007 I was elevated to the admin group while helping out with a server move. Around the beginning of this year, Cheers and Gears was dying a slow, painful, death in the image of our favorite company. I decided to do some much needed maintenance and find ways to secure financing for server and software upgrades. Since that time I have filled the role of head admin previously held by FlyBrian and Josh before h…

Eliminate the Politics section as it is, and then have a section for debate. Have a moderated, intelligent debate between two C and G members on a specific topic. We could have a Peanut gallery thread, but most of those tend to be useless. methinks a section where the general audience could "cross examine" the debaters with a limited # of questions (say a limit of 3 per member) would be better... Just my two cents.

Since the Politics section seems to be the most active forum on the website right now... and it's not related to automotive news... a small restriction has been put in place. In order to enter the Politics forum, you must make at least 5 posts in any other forum in the previous 24 hours before you will be permitted to post in Politics. No one, not even myself nor the other Admins are exempted from this rule. This also presumes that you already have access to Politics. -DD

Why Lock A Topic Because Doane Asks For It?

I am here, asking the moderation team why they locked a topic because 1 member, Chris Doane asked for it to be locked? What is the problem with letting the debate (which it was, with no personal attacks) go on? Is it because the C&G staff cater to certain people? Is it because the C&G staff lack the.........fortitude to stand up to those that they see as "almeighty" in the "WWW" (no...not WW3). I guess I just dont get why that was locked? Maybe because Fly made a quick hundred bucks off of AutoBlog to "invest" in C&G? Or......possibly the potential for ads to come into the site, which was what was the "wave of the future" to me? At anyrate.....When Chr…

For anyone who has ever considered donating money to C&G, we've set up a Paypal button on the front page. If you click on it, you'll be forwarded to a Paypal payment form with Josh's email address and the subject 'Donation for Cheers and Gears' pre-filled in. All you need to do is fill out the amount you'd like to donate. Of course, if you don't have a Paypal account, you'd need to create one, but that's really pretty painless to do. Of course, we're not trying to shake anyone down, but a couple of bucks here and there could help defray some of the costs of keeping C&G running. Josh pays for the hosting costs on his own, and does it out of love for the site, bec…

Morning all, Has anyone else upgraded to IE11 or Firefox 25? Are you running on windows 7 or Window 8 or 8.1? I have IE 11 and Firefox 25 on both Windows 7 and an upgraded 8.1 system. If you right mouse click on the quote button in a forum post and say open in a new tab, everything works fine and you can reply and post. Yet if you just click on the quote button it will take you to the field to type your reply but be blank. No quoted post will appear and the only way to make it work is to do the right mouse click and open in a new tab for quote replying. If you just click in the reply field to post a comment, it is a 50/50 chance that you will see your posting comment. …

Multiple users have reported issues with the current skin we are using. I've opened a ticket with the skin's creator and not had any reply. If you are having difficulty with the current skin or it isn't rendering in your browser properly* feel free to scroll to the bottom and change your theme to Haze. This may become the new theme for C&G going forward after I make a few more adjustments. *Almost all problems are being reported when the user is on a Mac and using Safari. If you are one of these users, you will almost certainly want to switch to the Haze theme. Please please please report any issues to me promptly.

I don't want this to get lost in the Google Ads thread. Please read, comment, and suggest alterations. I'm pretty much set on this direction generally, but refinements are welcome. ------- Here is my vision for Cheers and Gears. I don't care if we have 500 members of 500,000.... that's not how I'm measuring our success. Eventually, and with the appropriate software development changes, I want C&G to be an automotive Wikipedia with the best forums (not necessarily biggest) around. I want C&G to be the reference site for car people to learn about the "stovebolt chevy" then kick around and argue about it. I want C&G to offer the automotive news, but…

"It feels soooooooo good to be back!!!!" Roseville, MI - While Eminem may be in rehab for a drug addition problem, I'm here to say I've gotten my fix of my drug of choice, C&G is back! While there have been rumors that we were closed for good, that Walt had forgotten to pay the hosting bill, and even the tried and feasibly often rumor that the General themselves shut us down. Nope. None are correct. We've decided to move to a more, secure server and in the process it's obvious some changes have had to have been made. Most notable is while it is unfortunate, it was necessary. In the past couple weeks, the moderating team has noticed that some members who have chosen to ignore others have decided to post screen shots of the page that says "you have chosen to ignore _________." This is highly frowned upon, as it creates nothing but tension between members, and it is rather childish. We would like to issue a fair warning to everyone about this, so that everyone knows that posting something along these lines is unacceptable. Thank you, The Moderating Team.

I love this forum software, except for one simple little annoyance. In other sites, there was perhaps a 1 min delay after your initial post, before recognizing any subsequent edit as an edit. Sometimes I catch a simple quick grammatical error or spelling or whatever, immediately after posting, and I correct it within the span of a min. Often just a few seconds, especially on a quick response. But no matter how quick you are, it gets noted as an edit with this software. Would it be possible to delay it by a minute? That allows you a quick fix, but little else. I see a lot of post edits, and I will hazard a guess that it is often just a post edit, rather than a c…

Yes, Isuzu has announced that they will be leaving the United States light-vehicle market after 2008. Not that you might have noticed, of course, since their final two products are rebadged GMC models. Still, they did provide some cool stuff over the course of their stay with us. The Isuzu Impulse, for starters (either the original rear-drive version or the front-driver better known as the Geo Storm). Also the original Trooper, which may be lacking in design flair but has very good credentials as an off-road machine. And then there was the Amigo, as well as a very solid line of small pickup trucks (starting with the Chevy LUV and evolving from there), and Honda's firs…

Automotive News / November 13, 2006 How would you like to make $127,000 pure profit on every Camry, RAV4 or other Toyota you sold over your original forecast? Toyota raised its global sales forecast by 20,000 vehicles from its May prediction, to 8.47 million for the full fiscal year. It also jacked up its forecast for operating profits: to ¥2.20 trillion, or $18.66 billion, from $16.12 billion. Do the math. Nice margins if you can get them, eh? Higher volume isn't the whole story. It's barely a footnote. The weak yen is the real driver behind the higher profits forecast. Toyota now says each dollar it gets on U.S. sales will bring it ¥115 in revenues, not the ¥110 i…

I had to change the way the menu bar at the top functions. Instead of the menu popping up on mouse-over, you now must click the menu bar to click the sub-menus. This change was made because the mouse-over function does not work on touch screen devices.

Starting at 10:00pm EST Cheers and Gears will be down while we switch to a new, more flexible host that will allow us to better handle traffic fluctuations. We should be back up and running by morning. - DF

Are you being FaceBlocked? Facebook may be keeping you from seeing posts from the pages and brands you want to see. Make sure you click "Get Notifications" and "Add to Interest List" for each page you'd like to see posts from. Liking and Sharing our posts helps as well. You can reach Cheers and Gears Facebook page here. We're getting pounded on there... in spite of having 2,200+ Facebook followers, only 6 - 12 of those followers actually see each one of our posts. Sharing posts, liking posts, and commenting on posts increases our interaction score and lets more people see our material. I've noticed a few of your sharing and liking posts from competing outfits …

An open letter to the C&G community: (Do I really need to write this? Evidently so.) If this website is to be taken seriously, then we need to discuss ideas, not personalities; present facts, not ridicule; and try to encourage, respect, tolerate, and understand others' viewpoints. We share an enthusiasm for cars, so let's stand together with that common interest. Posters have every right and opportunity to disagree with someone else, but it isn't necessary to mock or vilify anyone or to cheapen their accomplishments! Or you have the right of ignoring someone's post. [ Refer to the "Employee Discount" thread under "General Motors News" for a number of the lates…

It's no secret that GM's in a precarous position right now, and the decisions it makes over the next couple of years will determine its future and, ultimately, its survival. With that in mind, there's never been a better time to play armchair CEO. C&G is pleased to unveil its newest feature, one that'll give all you who fancy yourselves in Rick Wagoner's chair someday a chance for your voice to be heard. For this feature, titled "C&G Wants to Know", we'll take a hot button issue concerning GM and ask the question "How would you address this issue if you were running the show at GM?" Since we'll be running this in the "To General Motors" section, you may just be fo…

So the current site skin we are using was only a temporary fix. The prior skin did not render properly on certain brower/OS combinations so I had to change it quickly. I have a new skin installed and have been testing it for about two weeks. I am getting ready to switch the site over to the new skin very soon. This new theme is very mobile friendly and will allow you to use C&G from your phone or tablet much easier than you can today. I invite you to try the new skin by scrolling to the bottom of any page, click Change Theme, and pick the theme named Nerva. To switch back, pick the theme named Haze. As always please report any issues in this thread.

just wondering if it needs clarifying, or to be strictly enforced. or would just a room need to be created for strictly that purpose? I think the topic is important to more than a few people on here, can something be worked out?

On the default skin for the page, at the top there is the dark blue area w/ the stylized Cheers and Gears logo..there are some gray and silver objects behind the logo in the background. It looks like a grille mesh on the left behind 'Cheers' and to the right of 'Gears' is soemthing with a folding flap on the far right. They perplex me. What are they?

I finally have a successful test upgrade of the software complete. I will be pulling the trigger on the upgrade sometime this week. It takes about 12 hours to complete the initial upgrade before I can let you back in, then here is 24 hours of background upgrading where search won't work and posts might not look right. The speed of the site is greatly improved and also improved mobile support. Please note - Your current display name, if different from your log-in name, will become your new log-in name. You should also be able to use your email address to log in. Of course I will also make my email available for anyone who has log-in difficulties. This is a ma…

China's Brilliance BS6 sedan fails German crash test 06.21.07, 10:52 AM ET | Link to Original Article @ Autoblog FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - A car with which China's Brilliance wanted to conquer Europe's automobile market has failed to pass a benchmark German crash test, the German ADAC automobile club said today. The BS6 sedan, made by Chinese car maker Brilliance, won only one out of a possible five stars in the crash test, carried out in accordance with Euro NCAP regulations, at ADAC's crash test laboratories, the organisation said. It was the second time in less than two years that a Chinese-made car has failed the test, following the spectacular failure o…

It took a long, LONG time but I can finally appreciate Invision Power Board. This place is looking very nice and runs really well. It's very clean and easy to use. I haven't tried mobile yet but I imagine it's also looking very good. I've used this software as an admin in the past and had a lot of trouble feeling comfortable with it. Now it appears to be one of the better options available. I may even give it another try myself... In any event, IPB kept me away from here before recently. I very much disliked using the older versions. Now I find myself dropping in more and more...

The Astrolab's ultra-lightweight monocoque chassis is built of carbon fiber and functions as a safety cell protecting the two inline occupants. Photovoltaic cells are covered by a unique nano-prismic film that is designed to concentrate solar energy. A 21-horsepower electric motor is all that is required to drive the 617-pound vehicle. Venturi says the vehicle can recharge itself while in motion and can store solar energy in its nickel-metal-hydride batteries. With a top speed of 75 mph and a range of 68 miles, the Astrolab is intended primarily as an inter-city commuter — albeit a fairly expensive one. Venturi says it is scheduled to deliver the first cars in January 2…

As a member of the C&G Staff, I feel it's my responsibility to make the members aware of features that may make their time on the forums more enjoyable (or less irritating depending on your current viewpoint). If there is a certain member whose posts irk you and you don't want to read what they have to say, I suggest you make use of the forums user ignore feature. Instructions: -Go to "My Controls" on the right menu. -On the next screen, there is a link called "Manage Ignored Users". -The next screen explains the details for you but basically you just enter the name of the user(s) you don't wish to hear from. From then on, you should not hear from that pa…

Over the years, Cheers and Gears has strived to be come the best place for GM Enthusiasts to gather on the 'net. While news is a huge part of this, it isn't everything. C&G boasts one of the most tightly-knit communities on the web. You've all stuck with us through the good times and the bad. As a show of gratitude, we gladly take the wraps off of a redesigned Cheers and Gears aimed at making your experience here as enjoyable and as fun as possible. The first thing you notice is the spiffy new front page. While the layout is similar to the last one, a lot more information is available right at the tip of your mouse pointer. From the front page you can now login to th…

What is wrong with C&G and never updating the news? There have been major events since it was last updated, such as GM's new 5year/100,000 mile warranty. If this site is going to remain competitive it needs to be updated at least once a day. I like this site lot more then GMI but am forced to read GMI due to the lack of news here.

Why does the administrator delete a link that doesn't have anything more than a link? He seems to want you to discuss what is in the link in addition to posting a link. Why? Besides his forum..his rules? Is the DO NOT SPAM message an automatic link? Or does he personally E Mail everyone who posts a link without additional words/comments. Somehow to accuse someone of spam (for sending one link) seems a bit offensive. Thanks.

Cars.com Interesting...it says that the new Avalon has "average" reliability, as does the RL and Odyssey. Nissan's not doing so hot either...the Titan, Armada, QX56, and Quest rank among the 48 least-reliable vehicles sold. Yeah, maybe for some of recently laid-to-rest models like the Cavalier and Windstar before Detroit began actively pursuing higher quality. Who says that still holds true today? Why is CR always so quick to jump on the domestics without even giving them a chance to prove themselves?

I am currently in discussions with a contact at GM for C&G to receive test vehicles for us to review. I am looking for editors to join the staff who would be willing to review and write these articles. I can only accept one or two positions. You must be over 25 years old, have access to a good digital camera <no camera phones>, and be fully licensed to drive. Some ability to write well would be helpful. There may be further requirements.
