With the introduction of the Toyota Supra, rumors have been swirling that the 86/BRZ twins might not be replaced when their production lives were up. Autocar UK has a quote from Toyota's European Marketing Chief saying "[the GT86] has been a successful halo product for us" and added that "...the Supra is not to replace that car." The 86/FR-S/BRZ was released in 2011 as a co-development between Toyota and Subaru. It uses Subaru's boxer engine and transmission. It is highly likely that the next generation model would continue to use the signature engine. The new car would continue sit below the Supra in the Toyota lineup. Akio Toyoda has stated interest in building …

Toyota announced today that the Toyota Avalon and Camry would be getting an all-wheel drive option. It's the first time the Camry has offered all-wheel drive since 1991 and the first ever for Avalon. AWD will be available as a standalone option on Camry LE, XLE, SE, and XSE trims and on the Avalon XLE and Limited trims. In both models, the car is powered by a 202 horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and an 8-speed automatic. Camry XSE AWD and both Avalon AWD trims get 205hp with their dual exhaust. The AWD system is borrowed from the Toyota RAV-4 and is called Dynamic Torque Control AWD. It is designed to help with traction in slippery weather but not drag down fue…

Camry glitch In four-cylinder Camrys, the software allegedly learns the driver's style, and those drivers with a frugal right foot get less response over time. Sudden demands for power – like a quick shift into the passing lane – can confuse the system and leave drivers with less power than they need.

In today's Akron Beacon Journel they reported a local Toyota Dealer [Ganley Toyota] had discovered 1995-2000 Tacoma pick up trucks with frames rusted through just in front of the rear spring mount. They included pictures and all. They say Ganley found the first one last fall and now have 20 broken frame trucks on the lot. Toyota has sent in engineers and have been looking into this. Here is the odd thing... The trucks are worth about $3,000- $5,000K and Toyota is paying over Blue Book for them. Some of these trucks have 200,000 miles and they are giving $11,000-$12,000 for these trucks. I know companies will do some good will but if one dealer has 20 trucks alrea…

Mark Rechtin Automotive News May 28, 2007 - 1:00 am LOS ANGELES -- A batch of camshaft failures in 5.7-liter V-8 engines has dinged the launch of the Toyota Tundra pickup. Camshafts in 20 engines have snapped, says Toyota spokesman Mike Michels. The outside camshaft supplier, which Toyota declined to identify, has traced the problem to "a metallurgical defect in the casting, a flaw in the metal which they have corrected," he says. To date, Toyota has built 30,000 of the engines, and the company is determining how many might be affected. Michels says that it was "an early batch," and that "Toyota is confident in the production from that point on." Full article: http:…

2007 Toyota Camry Ready to spoil a new round of frugal family buyers — and keep its best-selling title. by Bengt Halvorson (2006-01-30) What's probably the most common car onU.S. streets isn't a Chevy or a Ford, but a Toyota. The Camry has been the best-selling car in America for eight of the past nine years. More than ten million Camrys have been sold since 1983, when the model was first introduced, and the majority of those have been sold in the U.S. With each new Camry much improved, and an even better value it seems, expectations for the new '07 model are high. There's also the issue that the Camry is just so darned good and efficient at being a comforta…

C&D Link A First Look At Toyota’s Not-So-Secret Seriously Full-Size Pickup: No More Mr. Nice Guy. BY TONY SWAN, October 2006 Toyota calls it “the single most important product in its history,” which may seem like a stretch coming from a company that sells over 400,000 Camrys every year in the U.S., four times the volume of it full-size pickup sales. But of course “full-size pickup” and “100,000 sales” are two elements of Toyota’s U.S. product portfolio the corporate product strategists wish to redefine. Before we get into the few specifics we can relate, though, we must first tell you about the Byzantine rules governing what we can’t mention. In order to attend T…

HARRELSON TOYOTA One of my local Toyota dealers is running an ad for 8K off of the Tundra. Once upon a time, when GM was giving $8000 back to customers in order fo them to purchase a truck it was called "Bribing the consumer to buy their product." according to our fabulous media. Now that Toyota is doing it, all we hear is 1) Nothing 2) About how Toyota is "serious about selling trucks" or 3) About how good the Tundra is selling(!!!!!1111!!11) Remember; it kinda-sorta, in a way, maybe, quite possibly is out selling the GMC Sierra this year. You heard it here first, now here's comfirmation of the new Camry's transmission troubles: Credit: TCC Toyota Recalling Camry The newest edition of the Toyota Camry is being recalled for a problem with the transmission. The problem, Toyota says, involved only a half-percent of Camrys built thus far for the 2007 model year. The new six-speed automatic transmission could lose second and sixth gear during operation. Toyota told Reuters the vehicle still will operate even if the gears are lost, and that the problem usually happens within the first 500 miles of use.

What happens when you unleash a pack of automotive journalists on the newest hybrid on the block--and challenge them to beat the chief engineer's best fuel economy? If you plan it right--set a low bogey--you'll let journalists write the best story on the 2010 Toyota Prius from behind the wheel. The fuel economy story. That's exactly what Toyota did at the Napa unveiling of the new Prius, where car writers far and wide topped the engineer's 62.9 mpg by as much as 12 mpg. On a total loop of 33.2 miles, I logged in at 69.5 miles per gallon, without even really trying--just coasting to stops, accelerating very gradually and using the Prius' EV mode to coast into our host …

Okay, I was just watching a Toyota commercial advertising their sedans when they announced their "270hp Avalon". Are they allowed to "round up"? I mean, at first their ratings went from 280 to 268 when the new system came out, and their commercials kept preaching 280 rather than changing the voiceover for the correct numbers. But now, blatently announcing "270" when it's still a couple of hp off--isn't that illegal? I'm not going to complain over 2hp--no one would notice the difference, but it's more the principal of the matter. How can you try to be the world's biggest auto maker, and lie? Sorry, I know that…

Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. aims to slash to one year the time to get new models off the drawing board into production, a pace analysts say would be the industry's fastest and could save tens of millions of dollars annually. Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker, already holds the fastest production record, building a car or truck within 24 months of completing a design, said Jeff Liker, an engineering professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who studies Toyota's production methods. Cutting the time to 12 months widens its lead over the industry, which takes on average up to three years to get a model into production. …

Toyota Dealers Offer Discount On Newly Redesigned Tundra By NORIHIKO SHIROUZU - March 9, 2007 10:06 a.m. Toyota Motor Corp. says some of its dealers are offering as much as a $1,500 discount on the basic work truck version of Toyota's newly redesigned Tundra truck, just barely one month after it went on sale. The discount for the Texas-built large truck reflects the intense competition in this lucrative segment, and the challenge Toyota faces in its effort to substantially expand its sales in a segment long dominated by Detroit brands. The discount is a one-month, nationwide program that began this month and is described by Toyota as "another tool," to spur sales, i…

Found this while searching the web: I haven't seen it yet, so correct me if it's already debuted or something. It's a Lexus hybrid concept that I assume is debuting at Tokyo. I don't have any info on it other than that though. Isn't the Lexus there supposed to hint at the next LS? If so, this should be pretty accurate I think. I'm not sure I like it because it looks just like a big IS, and I don't think the LS should look like an IS on steroids. I'd rather it looked like a big GS than a big IS. Lexus cars are regarded as some of the safest on the road, however a new lawsuit against the company could tarnish this reputation. A class action brought about by a Florida law firm alleges that the Lexus ES350 is fitted with a faulty front passenger airbag sensor that could prevent the airbag from triggering in the event of a collision. The suit goes on to explain that the defective vehicles are fitted with a weight sensor that gauges the weight of the person in the front passenger seat, but that these sensors have been found to be faulty. One representative claims that he tested multiple ES350 vehicles and found them to be defective, as did other customers from acr…

You know I have to say I rather like the new Toyota Yaris, particularly the sedan in "S" trim. It's cute, like a baby Camry. It's only got one flaw. Why oh why did Toyota yet again stick the guage pods in the center of the flippin' dashboard?! I mean seriously, it's such a stupid place to put them, you have to look down and away from the road to check them. Everyone gripes about them, I'm sure Saturn won't do it again with the next Ion. It just baffles me why Toyota is so dumb. Oh well.

Most vehicles sold feature an internal combustion engine running some type of fuel, but a Toyota executive believes this engine will be gone for vehicles by 2050. “We expect that by 2050 we will have reduced CO2 emissions from vehicles by 90% compared to the figure in 2010. To achieve that from 2040 simple internal combustion engined cars will not be made, but they may be the basis of some hybrid or plug-in hybrid cars,” said Seigo Kuzumaki, Toyota’s head of advanced R&D and engineering. Kuzumaki's reasoning for this comes down to governments tightening regulations on emissions. This, in turn, will cause automakers to accelerate development of alternative po…

Recalling Toyota's Recalls: Over 14 million in past 12 months, 25.6 million since January 2005 November 1, 2010 - Drew Dowdell - Chief Editor CheersandGears.com No one can argue that it hasn't been a roller-coaster year for the world's largest car company. It was a year ago tomorrow that Toyota issued it's largest recall ever for possible gas pedal entrapment caused by loose floor mats. That initial recall of 3.8 million vehicles seemed to unleash a blizzard of further recalls. In the past 12 months, the grand total for Toyota's recalls has been more than 14 million units. suntimes my favorite line.... "With the Camry, Toyota may have perfected the family car,'' Toyota says. Let's hope not. Cars such as the new Ford Fusion cost less, are just as practical and are far more fun to drive.

Report: Toyota Set to Launch Lexus $170,000 Supercar in 2008 Date posted: 03-06-2006 TOKYO — Toyota has secretly approved plans to put its sensational 200-mph Lexus LF-A supercar in the market, according to a report in Tokyo. Japan's media are reporting that Toyota will launch a luxury sports car for the Lexus brand embracing F1 technology in fall 2008. The reports also say Toyota is pitching hard to bring the Japanese F1 Grand Prix to its newly refurbished Fuji Speedway track, which will help the company drive home the car's F1 connection. The supersleek LF-A, as shown so far, has a 5.0-liter, front-mounted V10. However, with F1 engine regulations switching to V8,…

A new cruiser for the kids By Karl Brauer Date posted: 01-01-2006 If your first thought when gazing at the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser is something along the lines of, "Oh great, another retro vehicle," you're not alone. Between the Volkswagen "New" Beetle, Mini Cooper, Ford Mustang and recently unveiled Dodge Challenger, it could be argued that automakers have run out of new ideas and are simply living off their past glory. But there's a flaw in that line of thinking. Simply put, Toyota is having plenty of success with its current SUV lineup. Even the company's oldest off-road design, the Land Cruiser, continues to win awards and accolades, including Edmunds' 2006 Mos…

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. is working on a hybrid version of its next-generation Tundra pickup. "We are doing the necessary technical development so that a large pickup with a hybrid will be developed," said Masatami Takimoto, Toyota Motor executive vice president for advanced technology. But several key details still need to be worked out, says Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. Toyota is conducting an engineering feasibility study to determine whether a Tundra hybrid can meet customer requirements, Press said. Toyota will redesign the Tundra in early 2007. Hybrids use gasoline engines and electric engines to power the wheel…

2007 Tundra Falls Short in NHTSA Frontal Crash Test Rating By: Mike Levine Posted: 03-16-07 18:36 PT © 2007 PickupTruck.com Page: [1] In what may turn out to be a significant marketing and sales blow to the biggest vehicle launch in Toyota's history, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released its frontal impact crash test ratings for the new 2007 Tundra full size pickup - only four out of five stars for driver and passenger safety. NHTSA tested the Regular and Double Cab versions of the Tundra, with the same four star results. In the same test, the all new 2007 Chevrolet Silverado scored five out of five stars, matching the same five sta…

Review: 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid The 2008 Highlander Hybrid is an exceptionally versatile package that allows you to haul the kids and their lanky pals in happy comfort without experiencing unnecessary gas pump trauma. It's always quiet and hassle-free, just like the neighbor's kid (not your own), and its green-friendly powertrain takes some of the guilt out of the constant motorized errands that are part of raising a young family. It's comfortable and useful without being so precious that you're afraid of parking it somewhere a rogue supermarket cart might find you. You might even be able to cancel that summer math tutor if you can get the kids involved in runnin…

Dealers have a slim 10-day supply of the redesigned 2007 Toyota Camry, which hit dealerships in March. The Georgetown, Ky., plant is running overtime and weekend shifts. Sales executives are begging for the Japanese Camry plant to export more. The car has no incentives. Toyota Recalls 75,000 Prius Hybrids

DETROIT - Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it is recalling 75,000 Prius gas-electric hybrid cars because their engines can stall due to an electrical problem. Involved in the recall are some 2004 and early 2005 model year Prius cars. The cars have a gas engine as well as a battery-powered electric motor that can run separately or together to save fuel. In affected vehicles, dashboard warning lights may come on and the gasoline engine shuts down. The vehicle's electric motor will continue operating in a limited capacity, so drivers can steer to the side of the road. The gasoline engine may start working again if the driver restarts the vehicle. Toyota spokesm…

Toyota adds cheaper Tundras Alan Ohnsman | Link to Original Article @ DetNews Toyota Motor Corp. will add 13 more versions of its full-size Tundra pickup, including lower-priced models with fewer features, as Japan's largest automaker targets a bigger share of U.S. truck sales. Changes for the 2008 model year include "Tundra Grade" DoubleCab and CrewMax trucks for $1,400 and $1,990 less than the cheapest 2007 versions, Toyota said Tuesday. They are aimed at buyers who need a basic work vehicle, said Irv Miller, vice president for U.S. communications. "We want to have the opportunity to deepen our market, to attract more on the work side, the lower end, people that di…

No more clowning around By John DiPietro Email Date posted: 12-15-2005 We'll be blunt; we haven't given much love to the Toyota Echo, a car that was non-affectionately dubbed "The Clown Car" by this writer. Its tall roof and pudgy body made us think a dozen goofballs with frizzy orange hair and jumbo shoes would spill out when the doors opened. Mediocre cabin trim and shaky handling didn't help either. Now comes the Echo's overdue replacement, the 2007 Toyota Yaris. With the new Yaris (yes, the name Echo is gone), Toyota steps things up in every way. Rather than having the two-door liftback and four-door essentially differing only in body style, two separate te…

UAW pushes to organize Kentucky Toyota plant Sholnn Freeman | The Washington Post | Link to Original Article @ DetNews GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Dissident workers at the Toyota plant here gather at the Best Western Georgetown on Wednesdays between shifts to shape a battle plan. The workers are angry at conditions at this flagship Toyota site, where the best-selling Camry is built. The stakes for the UAW intensified this month as a private-equity firm agreed to buy Chrysler, raising fears that t…

funny stuff, i was reading it at the Target stores tonight. basically, in spite of the 'it will be reliable because its a toyota' kool aid lines, they basically hated it and won't recommend it. i was so ROTFLMAO they had issues with a lot of the non-performance stuff. they liked the powertrain and off road prowess, but it wasn't soft and cuddly enough for them. noisy, rides hard, blind spots, interior quality issues, etc. I guess toyota makes a non-pansy vehicle and gets on CR's bad side! Read it if you get a chance. has toyota gone to the bad side? LOL, so desperate top plug all segments that now they have p1ssed off CR? Consumer Reports is more hilario…

Look at the bright side, you guys will be the lucky few to have the car and show it off to your fellow BMW M3 drivers. eGMCarTech

Toyota recalls 367,600 SUVs to fix flawed clip Link to original article @ Chicago Tribune By Alan Ohnsman Bloomberg News Published July 12, 2006, 3:38 PM CDT Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second-largest automaker, is recalling 367,600 U.S. Highlander and Lexus RX sport-utility vehicles to fix faulty clips that may cause a console panel to fall onto the accelerator. Toyota's U.S. unit will begin notifying owners of 2004 and 2005 Highlanders and RX 330s and 2006 Highlander Hybrid and RX 400h models later this month, spokesman Bill Kwong said today. This was a video obviously put together by Ford marketing, and compares the new Silverado and Tundra to the F150. Apparently 28mph is the harmonic sweet spot for the Ford (why not 25 or 30mph?). Anyway, Looks like the F150 and Silverado were dam near equal, but the Tundra is flopping all over the place!

19 December 2005 By Robert Farago Jinking through traffic somewhere above the ton, it quickly became apparent that the Lexus IS 350 wasn’t the ideal car for the job. The erstwhile sports sedan bumped and jiggled over surface imperfections like a tied-down tunermobile. It rolled through directional transitions like a luxobarge, helming with unacceptable imprecision and unwelcome lean. While the powerplant provided more than enough shove for the work at hand, the IS 350’s dynamics drew a definitive line between “doable” and “enjoyable.” If further proof were needed that I was in the wrong car at the wrong speed, the BMW M3 keeping pace provided it. After a few polite l…

Scion ex D in Amazon Green, manual, with the 16" alloys, mats and short shifter. Kind of reminds me of a mid-teens antique Mack truck, with its coffin nose. Motorweek's YouTube vid from when it came out in '08 says it'll turn a mid-16 second quarter, and it gave them 38+ mpg, which is well above the EPA estimate. Only thing, it said the manual gearchange is a bit long in throws, hence the short shifter.

Can Tundra overcome Domestic loyalty? Toyota hopes to double annual sales with new Tundra By MARK RECHTIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS 6:15 am, February 27, 2006 Traditionally cautious Toyota is taking a gamble on the redesigned 2007 Tundra. Toyota's new assembly plant in San Antonio will double Tundra production, so the automaker must find lots more buyers for its full-sized pickup. The problem: The current Tundra is not luring large numbers of Big 3 truck loyalists out of their pickups. Toyota has been surprised by its inability to win over consumers who already own import-brand cars, says Ernest Bastien, vice president of Toyota's vehicle operations group. In 2005, T…
