GRAZ, Austria — The Jeep Commander SUV next year will join the growing range of Chrysler and Jeep models built in Austria.

Automotive supplier Magna Steyr will build the SUV in Graz, Austria, DaimlerChrysler said. The decision was made in part to meet demand for the vehicle. Austria will be the production site for all markets outside North America that will take the Commander next year, the German-American automaker said.

Magna Steyr already builds five Chrysler group models in Graz, including the Chrysler 300C sedan, the Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager minivans and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.

DaimlerChrysler and Magna Steyr have invested $11.2 million in preparation for the Commander production line.

What this means to you: Chrysler and Jeep models are gaining popularity in Europe, so it makes sense to build as many as possible close to their customers.
