The survey polled 8,562 people -- 5,297 of them Ford employees -- over the summer of 2005, and the findings were as chilling as they were revealing.

The most unsettling wasn't that most people thought Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. was the industry's leading automaker (and would be a decade from now) or that Washington and Manhattan "elites" didn't believe Ford is much more important to the U.S. economy than Toyota.

It was the damning assessment from Ford's own people: 83 percent said they believe Ford is falling behind its competitors, and 69 percent of Ford dealers -- more than any other group polled -- agreed with the statement that "buying American is more important to past generations."

Ford is in a deeper hole today than when the survey was taken. Its U.S. market share is down another point to 16.8 percent and likely to bottom out near 14 percent, the company says. Losses are expected to exceed $5 billion this year. About 30,000 hourly workers and 14,000 salaried employees are expected to leave the company......."
