Spied: VW Passat R36

Posted Image

Volkswagen is currently testing at Nürburgring the new sporty Passat version R 36. The photos are showing two prototypes of both sedan and wagon.

The car has larger air intakes in the front end, large alloy wheels (still painted black), and the rear end is featuring a small spoiler and two exhaust pipes.

Power for this R 36 comes from a V6 280 HP engine.

This would be much more impressive if the Passat didn't already offer the 3.6L.

My thoughts exactly.

A 280 hp 3.6L VR6?

The regular Passat already has this 280 hp 3.6L VR6 engine.

So, either it has a stickshift and something else to make it special, or it's going to crank out a lot more power and maybe feature AWD/DSG.

4.2L V8 would have been a better choice I think.

The last time the Passat came with an 8-cylinder engine, it didn't go too well.

I love the design of VW interiors. Not too fond of the metal in this, but the interior is nice.

I don't know what you guys are talking about...I love the new Passat. Glad to see the wagon in the lineup too. I agree it doesn't make sense to offer a motor with similar output and try to market it even higher up the range. However, I don't recall seeing any pricing yet announced either.

Interior trim is really gaudy looking on this model, but overall fit and finish of these cars have been well above standard in my opinion. I don't find them too pricey either, wagon with 280HP and AWD base price of $33,000? I haven't optioned one out, so maybe it tops $40K all said an done, but that is the end user hiking the price up depending on their needs and wants. Base prices seem reasonable.

That dead pedal is retarded (actually, all the pedals are retarded). And isn't the huge air intake with the pencil-thin marker light Audi's new style too. Along with the two-tier front grill, Audi and VW will soon no longer be two divisions in the same company, they will be the same period!
