ACURA UNVEILS NEW RDX RALLY EDITION

"Consumption is the key," says Colliver

December 12, 2006 -- TORRANCE, Calif. -- Acura takes center stage again by unveiling a prototype of the RDX Rally, a high-consumption variant of its RDX small crossover.

"The RDX Rally is Acura's most serious attempt at racing yet," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "With the introduction of this revolutionary new rally vehicle, we not only borrow from the legendary racing heritage of the NSX but completely ignore it by going offroad with a crossover SUV."

Similar to the RDX introduced several months ago and currently on sale, the RDX Rally brings offroad features to the street. Adding to its already large portfolio of standard equipment, the RDX Rally includes a limited edition two-tone Lemon Yellow/OMG BLU! paint scheme, RALLY badging, and a selection of crooked factory-applied decals. "That [misalignment] is a bit of an 'oops'" said Colliver, "but whatever."

Though a newcomer to the rally racing scene, Acura is anxious to discuss its racing strategy. "Since [the RDX] isn't really designed for offroad usage," admits Wayne Lafontaine, vice president of Honda Motorsports, "some claim that puts us at a disadvantage. We put years of Honda and Acura technologies into this vehicle. Audi has Quattro; we have 'Shawed' or whatever its called. Subaru has been in this game for a long time and they say they can hold onto their record and that we stole their paint scheme. To which I say, records are made to be broken. And their colors aren't trademarked. F**k their [subaru's] mothers."

Lafontaine goes on to describe a major advantage the RDX Rally has over the incumbants. "Our RDX averages 11 miles per gallon. Yeah. ELEVEN! As in LESS THAN TWELVE! We figure if we burn all the gas provided at the race course, we'll naturally win."

As a symbol of their 'Consumption' strategy, Team RDX has signed on Amerada Hess, Royal Dutch Shell, Citgo, and the nation of Saudi Arabia as their sponsors. They have also chosen the number 11 as their vehicle's number, signifying the maximum mileage ever recorded for an RDX.

The RDX Rally will never be available for purchase. Regfootball has preordered them all.

doesn't matter, its got VTEC........

my aztek does get 20 mpg in town, up to 25 on the autostrada, and that's driving it hard, although not as hard as the edmunds crew track testing an RDX at the Nurburgring or whatever.

why's that?  That vue gets at least 2.5x the gas mileage.

The Vue is also an economy SUV while the RDX is a luxury SUV. Compare the Vue's mileage to the CR-V's mileage, and see how they are the same despite the CR-V having a larger engine. Actually, if you take the manual transmission equipped Vue's out (since the 2wd CR-V only came with an Auto), the Vue gets worse mileage.

O c'mon. Everything from Navigators to Durangos to escalades drink less fuel than the RDX. It's pretty ridiculous to ever ration it out. Bottom line, Honda has no clue about turbos and how to get it to work without drinking gas like a 6000 pound SUV. They can't make 4 cylinders with enough power to pull a heavier car around without it drinking gas either. Clearly, Honda is out of its ELEMENT here. In fact, the Element gets terrible gas mileage too. Honda has been successful with zippy light small cars with no torque so they've been able to get good mpg. Now they try to build what is by today's standards an average weight car/suv (honda's making porky cars now?) and they simply failed big time in both power and pricey 91 octane fuel consumption.

Honda should have realized the v6 was the better option here for their porky little compact suv. In this application, they would have gotten a real motor under the hood with better mileage because it would not have been working so hard. the crv got screwed too, because that should have got a six as well. Look at the RAV4's destroy the CRV.

You are still comparing test drives, where the RDX is getting beaten on. I've said it before, just because a full-size SUV gets the same mileage in a test drive, doesn't mean it will in real life. Do you think they drove an Escalade or Durango to their limit on a mountain road? Constant acceleration, braking, tires screeching as they carve around tight hair pins. No they wouldn't, because that would be dangerous. Would they with an RDX? Yes, because it is designed to handle it.

Wow... that's not bad.

I saw a CRV in person and it isn't too bad. It certainly is not as bad as the Rav4 which happens to look like :butthead: ... and every moron buys them in silver or grey...
