Renault-Nissan mulls Chrysler or Ford tie-up post 2009

Late last year, Renault-Nissan was keen to tie-up with one of America’s Big Three and was in talks with General Motors until communications between the two came to a crashing halt when neither side could agree on the value of such an alliance. Renault-Nissan is reported to be on the merger hunt again, this time with either the Chrysler Group or possibly Ford.

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, who met with reporters from French newspaper Le Parisien, mentioned that synergies with US partners other than GM were possible. Ghosn has also stated that the French-Japanese duo would expand the alliance when it’s growing again. Nissan has been experiencing negative growth recently, and the priority now is to wait until this turns around.

Renault will be launching up to 26 models between now and 2009, including cars like the new Twingo and Koleos SUV. Ghosn also revealed that he hopes to establish several new marques as well as revive the Renault Alpine label, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Wow, Renault really wants to buy out an American car company, doesn't it? Really, really badly.

Seems that the private company that bought Chrysler could make a killing by just keeping things going till Renault decides to buy them.

Not sure Cerberus would want an ego like Ghosn around during the recovery phase (a few years later if things go according to plan may be a different story). I'd think Ford is the most likely candidate in the short term since The Family seems to be thinking of getting out.

Those with a historical bent will realize that is not the first time Renault's wanted their fingers in the "apple pie", so to speak - anyone remember "Franco-American Motors" and all those little Alliance/Encore $h!boxes they foisted on the world?

By the time Chrysler took over from the French, getting rid of AMC was a mercy killing - Jeep really was the only thing left to save.
