GM's Opel to bring out all-electric car at end-2010

07.17.07, 2:04 PM ET

BERLIN (Thomson Financial) - General Motors Corp unit Opel plans to bring out an all-electric car at the end of 2010, GM's European chief Carl-Peter Forster was cited as saying in an excerpt from tomorrow's Auto Motor Sport magazine.

He told the magazines that hybrid technology is too costly to use in small cars. A prototype of GM's E-Flex electric engine will be presented at the IAA car show in Frankfurt in September, he said, and series production is expected to start at the end of 2010.

Before anybody remembers the obvious dumb joke here: this is shocking news! :P

On a serious note, I'd like to see GM really going for it on these E-Flex vehicles as long as battery issues are solved by battery manufacturers. The marketing appeal of an electric car with an onboard generator could be immense: the Volt's engine doesn't have to rev much to charge the batteries IIRC what I read, and lower, nealry constant revs would mean much lower emissions, right?
