UAW's Gettelfinger leaves DaimlerChrysler board

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Ron Gettelfinger, president of the United Auto Workers in the United States, has stepped step down from DaimlerChrysler's supervisory board effective on Sept. 1, the carmaker said today.

The move follows DaimlerChrysler's sale of a majority stake in U.S. arm Chrysler Group to Cerberus Capital Management and Gettelfinger's consultations with other labor representatives on the board, a statement said.

Germany's IG Metall union, which had given the UAW one of its seats on the DaimlerChrysler board, has proposed that Valter Sanches be appointed by a court to succeed Gettelfinger, it added.

Sanches, a Brazilian, was a member of DaimlerChrysler's world employee council until May 2007.
