Holden Coupe 60

New chairman and Managing Director Mark Reuss, the American struggled with some of the Australian names (Toraina, Monairo) but with a background in GM USA’s performance division, it was natural that he introduce the ‘cherry on top’ of the Holden/HSV range, the never before seen Holden Coupe 60.

Click here to go to our Melbourne Motor Show page.

A next-generation Monaro in all but name, the Coupe 60 is named to celebrate the 60th birthday of Holden’s 48/215, but it’s also the 10th birthday since the original Monaro was unveiled in Sydney.

With a 6.0-litre engine with Active Fuel Management – cylinders that cut-out to save fuel – plus the ability to run on E85 ethanol fuel, there is a clear contradiction in the Coupe 60: it’s also heavily slanted towards racing.

The Coupe 60 features ‘Diamond Silver’ liquid metallic paint, ala McLaren’s F1 cars, 21-inch alloys with one-off hand-cut Kumho slicks, massive Brembo brakes and a side-exit exhaust. The undertray is flat-bottom, and runs to a rear underbody air diffuser. Bonnet nostrils and side gills are the garnish, but the interesting major features are the pillarless doors and lowered roof line, a feature designers say is production “possible”. Carbon fibre bucket seats feature inside, both front and rear.

Though a concept, the Coupe 60 is “production ready”. Based on the global GM rear-wheel drive platform shared with the VE, the rear end and wheelbase has been shorted to emphasise the length of the cabin and nose. The concept started in 2002 and Holden says is worth somewhere around $2.5 million.

Ruess stated the Coupe 60 was Holden’s gift to its fans. And we will look forward to its evolution into Monaro Mk3. HSV W427

HSV W427

It’s been a long time coming, but the HSV supercar is finally here. The W427, aka 7.0-litre, is “Australia’s first supercar” claimed Ruess. He added it will be Australia’s fastest car – a title Holden’s own Elfin brand might dispute, quicker than five seconds for the 0-100km/h and sporting a massive LS7 V8 with 370kW and 640Nm – figures that are 20 and 16 percent more than the current 6.0-litre HSVs.

The engine is the same as the Corvette ZR1 which means a dry sump, along with a unique cold-air intake and active exhaust with valves that open under pressure.

Finished in Panorama Silver, the same as the Walkinshaw Commodore released 20 years ago, the W427 will be priced somewhere around $125,000 to $140,000 when it’s available in July. Holden Sportwagon

If this really makes production, then it needs to come to the U.S. as a Pontiac product. I don't care if they call it GTO or G7 or whatever, just so it makes it into Pontiac's lineup. I don't wanna hear any whining about CAFE regulations and I don't wanna hear any more about importing a brand inappropriate, rebadged Holden Ute trucklet product for Pontiac. This is the Zeta based coupe that Pontiac so desperately needs to properly redefine and resurrect the division. Build it in Australia and import it, build it in Canada and import it (with NAFTA, would it really be considered an import?), or build it somewhere in America, JUST BUILD IT!

If GM does this and gives Pontiac a compact coupe, sedan, and maybe 5-door based on the Alpha platform, then Pontiac's lineup would pretty much be complete. All they really need is the following:

* Solstice

* G5: Compact coupe on Alpha.

* G6: Compact sedan (and maybe 5-door) on Alpha.

* G7: The midsize Zeta based coupe in this forum topic.

* G8: Midsize sedan on Zeta.

That's It!

I really wish GM would recognize what wonders a sporty, affordable, rear wheel drive lineup would do to make Pontiac relevant and desirable in the market once again.

it's completely brand appropriate as a halo coupe. The largest coupe Pontiac would sell. Sell a stripped down V8 version for 28k, no content, a racing coupe that would not be afraid to go toe to toe with Camaro. heck sell it with manual windows, base AC package, don't be afraid to make Pontiacs all about racing demons. Then of course go on to make it available with options. Pontiac's pricing should be more Acura and less Chevy, so at 28k to start for a stripped V8 model, we're talking low volume, low competition to Camaro, but still a viable price point for Pontiac fans to come in and claim thiers.

This is a beautiful coupe. In profile, better looking than G37 and 3-series. Performance, beauty, and a better value. A luxury coupe with real performance at Pontiac, with real luxury the kind only gleaned from looking at a car and knowing its value. Obviously, this car is connected with the early MT renderings of the GTO from a while ago, the yellow one. Put a more expressive front end, like the one found on those drawings, and you'd have a killer car.

this needs a link on the front page, hopefully a main story on it to get attention.

can somebody post some pictures on this page? I'm not at a computer to do that, but there are excellent pictures of this car available at wieck and probably autoreport.

I'm making a totally new thread with the press release and a good photo gallery, so mods, if you want to merge it and this thread when it's done, feel free to do so. :)

can you link to the front page, we need this to get attention [not that our voices seem to matter much anymore]. This car is clearly what the GTO was supposed to be, down to the Pontiac-like rear and front design theme, as well as tying into the Torana, Monaro, Commodore....the plan was clearly to develop a design theme both Pontiac and Holden could adhere to without much adaptation.

The more I look at it, the more enamored I become of it. The stance is sick. It is incredibly different from Camaro, only sharing a high shoulder and high cowl. The interior with a new steering wheel and slightly upgraded console looks phenomonal. I wholeheartedly believe Pontiac could cater more to hardcore drivers/racers group....especially since the plan seems to be to keep Pontiac down, by keeping volume down.

This would be a Pontiac, like the sedan G8, to run with BMWs, though this design especially caters to high class buyers by being more distinguished, unique, specialized. It's mistakes like not releasing this car to elevate the brand image at Pontiac, and make people believe in GM again, that make me think perhaps Wagoner needs to go. someone with better priorities would be getting this car to market yesterday.

it's good looking with the G8 fascia, buuuuut I would raaaather see it with something original, dark, mean, mysterious, to start a new trend for Pontiac. something more tomorrow than yesterday, which is where this look for Pontiac has been.

As for names, Moltar, would Pontiac Cialis suit you?

So, essentially, in a sense, the Monaro was, in fact, dead. But the Coupe 60 wasn't. :scratchchin:

With all of this talk of Zeta going away, GM sure does like to build new concept cars on it, don't they? We've had two so far this year, the GMC Denali XT and now this <Coupe 60>.

Hopefully both will be made soon and available even quicker  While I really like this Coupe 60, I'd take teh Denali XT in a heartbeat. But it sure would be fun being able to test drive all three (G8 Sedan, GTO, Dehnali XT) "just because"!!!

i would tend to agree with cire. add the solstice on alpha and the g8 sw. GM needs to learn how to do cars like this in volumes of 15-20k. Audi can send over a piddly few a3 and still sell them. In all the world markets and considering all the shared parts, i find it hard to believe that Holden / GM cannot find a way to make 40-50k coupes a year on the line with the other zetas....and send a few here.

i think the GTO moniker would be competely appropriate for the high level v8 versions of this car.
