Inching Ever Closer

28 posts in this topic

It's been a painstakingly long and tedious journey but at last I'm starting to see the real fruits of my work. This is the last set I'll show until it's finished, so hope you enjoy!

Since at low angles of the rear view you can see under the car I felt I should make some sort of a suspension and exhaust system and add a gas tank. I based the design off of a diagram of a BMW 320i I came across. Not the latest and greatest but easy enough for me to model and not spend days on.

And here it is with the body on.

And the rest:

AT long last I did the tail lights and wheels, as well as the front end. I've also gotten much better with the lighting. What do you guys think?

Great stance, good proportions... not perfect naturally but I can see that

you've spent a lot of time perfecting the design. Great start.

Neat. How did you do the headlights/fog lights?

Well, the shapes themselves are pretty simple. The "bulbs" are Nurbs spheres and the cylinders that house the bulbs are made by revolving an EP Curve. Nurbs hav an advatage over polygon in that they create much smoother surfaces with far less information, which makes for less lag...but I find them hard to model complex things with so that's why the car is made out of polygons. Maya has another geometry calls Subdivision which uses polygons as a base but can create smooth surfaces like Nurbs can using math, but it creates A LOT of lag very quickly.

Anyway, the housings are shades using a dgs_material shader that works with the Mental Ray rendering engine. The bulbs are just textured using Blinn (a shiny shader) and a glow effect. The supports for the cylinders are made from polygons and shaded with a black Blinn, and the entire headlight housing is part of the main body.

Here's a close-up of them:

sounds like a fairly easy to use 3D program ( good effort on your part ...but to me it looks like a Lexus & that is NOT a good thing at all...read ORDINARY,<than DULL & boring design wise...seems you were thinking Pontiac G8 & just came up a bit less than "there"...But for a start it still can work, the rendered database stuff is very cool, I think you need to Rethink the DESIGN elements if you have the patience to do so with this process as I think it could pay off better !! :scratchchin:

No 3D program is easy if you've ever used one. The closest one to being "easy" I think is LightWave but even then it's not something an inexperienced person can actually use and know what they are doing. Maya is a very complex, often not very user friendly but powerful program.

As for the design, everyone's entitled to their opinions and yes it has some inspiration from the G8, but just because a design is clean doesn't not make it dull. It doesn't have to be a nasty mishmash of poor styling ideas and overly done, cheap looking paint jobs with some chick thrown in in hopes of distracting the viewer from the bad design. :P

The design itself is more or less finalized, although there's room for tweaks, particularly the front. Anyway this is my first car project in 3D and by far the most complex project I've ever done in 3D.

Wow I am quite impressed dude...outstanding work so far, and the design is beginning to piece together nicely. The one thing though is that the sunroof looks way to close to the top of the windshield, push it back about 5-6 inches or so. I'm not wild about the the design of the tailights, but now seeing them in a "finished" state they are growing on me. The front gives me a quasi Chrysler feel for some reason, like 300C headlights. Can't wait to see the finished product.

i really like it but i feel like if the headlights were a bit less tall it would increase how aggressive the car looks quite a bit

and maybe put a crease or something in between the grill and lower air dam? like how the previous gen CTS has like a little shelf flush with the grill bottom at center that winds up protruding out 3 inches past the headlights on the sides... i dont know... something to make it look a bit less flat...

overall an absolutely fantastic job... i wouldnt even want to begin thinking about how to use a program like that... i am merely an engineer... i shall stick to my equations thank you :P

Thanks guys! Yeah the front end has actually been the most troublesome for me in terms of translating the sketch to 3D. What you're saying about slimming down the headlights a bit to make it look more aggressive is exactly what I've ben thinking about...I just have to, you know, do it without screwing up the model

As for the sunroof, I was originally planning to make it a glass roof up until the end of the sunroof, and the sunroof itself was about 2/3 of the glass behind that metal bar. Do you think I should make the sunroof smaller and increase the size of the metal "bar" or get rid of the bar altogether and make it look liek one big glass roof/windshield?

Oh, and the tail lights may not be done yet, in the original drawings they extended into the drunk lid some and merge together via a piece of metal that emulates the one on the top of the front grill. I haven't made it yet but was thinking about if I should or not...?

looks amazing, i commend you for being able to understand this crap... i can barely muster photoshop skills...

i like the glass roof idea, ala the Astra option thing, i love the windsheild leading right up to the roof, no obstructions

and is MDM critiquing someones work? thats likem william hung criticizing someones singing...

I'll try it without the bar and try to slim down the tail lights and post the results.

Ok guys, so after taking some of your thoughts into account I went back and played with the model. I slimmed down the headlights and teh grill, as well as fixing some (more) errors I found. I also tried it as a single piece-looking glass from windshield to sunroof.

I'm digging the new windshield/sunroof but now the headlights seem a bit off to me. Something I noticed while looking at the head on view, the area that houses the foglights so be darkened, maybe with some mesh pattern of something. It's too plain looking as is I think. I would complete the nose so to speak. As for the headlights being a bit off, I think it's cause you can tell where you made the alterations.

Hmm...do you think the size of the headlights and overall shape are better now or how they wer before? If they're better like they are now I can most likely clean up the work a bit.

Wow my spelling was horrible in that post, but anyway I think the shape of the lights is great, but I guess there's too much open space now bellow the headlights. It's a vast expanse of flat gray ( currently). Maybe adding a turn signal to the outer edge of the headlight that sort of follow the shape of the crease would add some more life to the front. Sort of like a thin strip running vertical from the top of the light to the bottom of it, with only a small lip visible from a profile shot...just enough to be seen from the side. Also as I mentioned before making the foglight area darkened or have a grille insert placed there would be good. I'm also liking the suggestion of a crease in the bumper to split the top and lower sections, too lazy to look back and who suggested it. I think by implementing those changes and doing some detail cleanup on the area you modified for the headlights would make all the difference.

Now you've done it, DF.

You've gone and made yourself our resident render specialist. :AH-HA_wink:

I have a feeling that your first car rendering will be the beginning of something (or several somethings) big.

Impressive work with possibilities written all over it.

Nicely done!

Delta, thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a shot..but first I have to get this out of the way...

rearlightsconcept1.png

rearlightsconcept2.png

These are part of the original tail light design that I had...however they came out different than the sketch did. I'm not sure if I even like them or not...so let's keep it simple: Were they better before or now?

Edit: OK after not feeling happy with the 2nd ones at all I tried again and came up with this one...which I like a lot better. What do you guys think of the 3?

Thanks Camino...it's a TON of work but it's so worth the effort! I can't wait until I finally put some "paint" on this baby.

Oh guys...this is due ina month and I still don't have a company or car name! Since now you all can actually see it, any suggestions?

The 3rd taillights are better. The whole design is brutally rockin'.

How about Juggernaut or Vanguard?

I really like the latest taillights a whole lot more than older designs.

I love the shape, but I'm not sure about the configuration inside. It's set too deep I think; besides taking up too much of the trunk space, it also makes it look like the body above the lamps is just a thin strap of metal sitting there instead of a substantial part of the car. Hard to explain, but I think you get me.

I'll bet it's a bitch working on that stuff in there though.

Yeah I get you, but on the other hand I like the way it looks thin and delicate above the tail lamps on the quarter panels, and it works for teh best since it was the easiest area to split and extrude the polygons. The lights themselves are a bit deep though. Maybe I'll fix them, maybe I won't..it depends on teh time I have/how easy it is and if my computer is willing...It just gave me a big F.U. and locked up. :P
