HYBRID TAXIS HIT NYC STREETS: NEW YORKERS HAIL FUEL-EFFICIENT CAB OF THE FUTURE
Posted Image

New York, NY (Nov. 10, 2005)—The greening of the iconic New York yellow taxi officially begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday as New Yorkers meet the first mini-fleet of hybrid taxicabs – six Ford Escape Hybrids. Ford was the first American auto manufacturer to introduce a hybrid vehicle.
The historic occasion was marked by a ceremony in New York, where officials from government, advocacy groups and industry gathered to send off the hybrid taxis in midtown Manhattan.

"I want to congratulate everyone involved for putting this innovative hybrid technology on the streets of New York City," says Ford Chairman and CEO Bill Ford.

Hey look, Ford is doing something with hybrids that will probably get the some positive press. I dont give a crap about a handful of buses in Seattle, GM go out there and take on Toyota, Honda and Ford already. Freaking Hyndai is going to be selling 50,000 hybrids before GM.

GM would be best to just install their mild hybrid system that is going into the Vue Greenline across the board or at least a large percentage of the vehicles they produce. That could slow the PR bleeding.

It's great that they'll be slightly more fuel efficient, but how will SUVs that are still compacts do with rear passengers? This ain't Europe, Americans aren't used to that sort of thing.
