Toyota plans to increase its U.S. sales by 21 percent by, the Nihon Keizai daily reported citing company officials.

The paper said Japan's biggest automaker aimed to sell 2.5 million new vehicles in the United States in 2008, up from 2.06 million units in 2004.

If it reaches that target, Toyota will likely become the third-largest automaker in the United States next year, surpassing the Chrysler division of DaimlerChrysler, the story said.

Toyota has been gaining market share steadily at the expense of Detroit's automakers. Its U.S. sales so far this year are up 11.7 percent from a year earlier.

if I remember correctly for 2004 sales, the top 3 were GM, Ford, Toyota, so hasnt Toyota already passed Chyrsler? With GM at 3.6 Million car sales, ford with 2.6, and Toyota just over 2 million?

In 2004 Chrysler sold 2.2 million vehicles, and Toyota sold 2.06 vehicles. Toyota did beat Chrysler in CAR sales though, 1.05 million for Toyota vs. 613k for Chrysler. For comparison, GM sold 4.655 million vehicles in '04 with 1.875 million being cars. Ford sold 3.32 million vehicles in '04 with 1.03 million being cars. So... Toyota is #2 in CAR sales, and #4 in total sales.
