BMW expanding S.C. plant

Recommended Posts

BMW says it's streamlining the factory, from a two line production system into a more efficient one line. In lay men's terms, it's an extreme make-over to prepare for the future. The BMW plant will be officially closed for the next four weeks. Sherry McCraw says, "It's really a tremendous amount of work..lot of stress."

There was work being done inside the plant and work outside the plant everywhere you looked. So obviously the closing isn't vacation time for the holidays, but the planning sure did take a lot of time and for good reason.

McCraw says, "We've been working on the planning for three years. Now it's action time, fun time four weeks to have everything installed and ready to go."

From installing thousands of new conveyors, seven thousand to be exact, to expanding the current building over 75 thousand square feet. McCraw told Fox Carolina's Lidia St. Mark, "Basically we're doing an extreme make-over on the plant. Things are different...but change is good, We decided to combine for remodeling."

BMW says the only temporary down side to the closing, a shortage of X5 models and Z4's in the marketplace. And not only are employees understandably excited about having the next four weeks off like Phil Martin. He says, "Oh man..we are looking forward to it, we've already made plans."

He says he's also looking forward to becoming more unified. He says, "To be able to come here, all of us the same schedule, come in as a team."

Plus BMW says the construction not only expands the plant but soon it may also expand the work force here as well. Martin says, "Certainly in the future with the promise of new models then we will be able to hire more people."

BMW says all of it's employee will also be re-trained on the new system and production will resume in early January.
