Toyota stumbles in race for China

James B. Treece
AN / August 22, 2005

Toyota Motor Corp., preparing to pass General Motors as the world's largest automaker, is a juggernaut in North America and Europe.

Do World War II memories hurt Japanese car sales?

Alysha Webb
AN / August 22, 2005

BEIJING -- In late 2003, Toyota Motor Corp. ran two print ads in China -- and promptly got into hot water.

In one ad, two stone lions, seen as a symbol of China, bow to and salute a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV. In the other, another Toyota SUV tows a broken-down vehicle resembling a Chinese army truck up a steep hill.

Chinese consumers were outraged. To their eyes, the ads denigrated China and smacked of cultural arrogance.

More proof that Toyota's marketing strategies need a LOT of work. China will buy GM for a long time, because they still dont like the Japanese.

..and another reason is because the Buick brand is very ingrained in Chinese society. They see it as a status vehicle. The Buick has a long history in China. It's almost like how Buick was viewed here many years ago.

I heard sometime earlier people had to use tape to cover up the the badges on Japanese marques just to avoid people vandalizing them. GM in China to me is like "a king in exile". Just went out to reign somwhere else. And at home (here in N.A.) it a mess.
