Jalopnik: GM's Bob Lutz Challenges America To Duel, Jalopnik Accepts [Siler Vs Nature]

10 posts in this topic

500x_Lutz-Vs-Siler-standoff.jpgGM's Bob "Maximum Marketing" Lutz today challenged any comers in an unmodified production sedan to a duel in a Cadillac CTS-V. We accepted, challenging him to race our own Wes Siler in an AMG C63. Lutz agreed. Two men enter...

The challenge took place earlier today on a conference call about GM's new marketing campaign: "May The Best Car Win." The theme of the campaign is the numerous new vehicles produced by GM that are as good, or better than, the competition. Given the GM products we've driven lately, we're not surprised they'd be pushing this message.

And to prove it, 77-year-old Bob Lutz told reporters he would challenge anyone in any production sedan to a race around Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway and try to beat him.

We're not sure he expected anyone to take him up on the challenge but we couldn't let it stand. We love the CTS-V, but we're at least going to try. So we told him we'd do it if he named the time and the place, and he accepted.

The details have yet to be worked out, but Lutz already told us and the assembled reporters "You're running into a trap because if you beat me by a second on the lap time, we'll just advertise the price difference."

We'll see...

This is awesome.

Especially this.

Race me in the Cutlass, Lutz?

If I lose, you build me some new rear-drive cars. If I win, you don't do anything.

(Yes, you read that right, muhahahahaha.)

The C63 isn't more expensive than the CTS-V though. But the CTS-V should beat it without too much trouble. The M3 was the car to pick, especially at Leguna Seca where there are only 2 fairly long straight aways, and a lot of tight corners where the M3 can shine. I like that Lutz has the swagger to challenge anyone, but Cadillac only has one sporty car. It isn't like Cadillac has an R8 or Panamera, or full performance line like AMG or M. Cadillac needs an ATS-V, CTS-V coupe, and a roadster/sports coupe before they can really brag about being a performance brand.

Cadillac needs an ATS-V
A near certainty once the ATS arrives

CTS-V coupe
already confirmed

and a roadster/sports coupe
I'll give you that, though a drop top based off either the CTS or ATS should fill the bill

ATS convertible is a must (as is a coupe), since the IS, G37, A4, 3-series and CLK have convertible models. But Merc still has the SLK and SL, BMW has the Z4 and 6-series, Audi has the TT and R8, Jag has the XK and coming XE roadster, Porsche has the Cockster, etc. Cadillac needs a true roadster or high end sports car, and not a reworked Corvette this time with a marginal interior. The $45-55k roadster market is crowded, Cadillac should go up to the $80-100k segment, or higher, and do something like the Tesla or R8. An electric supercar would be unique.

after this i want to see lutz challenge al gore and ed begley jr. to a hypermiling drive off, prius vs. volt.

it would be tough to tell whether begley or lutz is driving a particular car. they kind of have similar attributes, except begley always looks like a dork.

THIS IS GREAT. I hope Lutz whips that young-gun in an All American Cadillac. Next take on a super-car Lutz while you drive a ZR-1.
