TORRANCE, Calif. — The 2006 RL will be available with the RL Technology Package, which includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Adaptive Cruise Control and Michelin run-flat tires.

This marks the first appearance of CMBS on an Acura vehicle. The technology uses a millimeter-wave radar unit located inside the grille to monitor distance and closing rate between the RL and other vehicles. It continuously calculates the likelihood of a collision, first warning the driver through tactile and visual clues. If a crash is judged to be imminent, CMBS will first lightly apply braking and then retract the RL's seatbelts, and brake more forcefully.

Run-flat tires allow the RL to drive 125 miles at 50 mph after sustaining a tire puncture.

What this means to you: Although the credit must go ultimately to Mercedes for being the innovator in this field, Acura should be praised for making such advanced braking technology somewhat more affordable.
