Volkswagen’s New Beetle has been on the market for a little over ten years and has enjoyed relatively strong sales despite the lack of significant changes during its life. More than one million New Beetles have been built at Volkswagen’s Puebla plant in Mexico and it looks like developers have even more ambitious plans for the next-generation model, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2012 for the 2013 model year.

The latest information comes directly from Volkswagen’s U.S. chief, Stefan Jacoby, who revealed that the successor to the New Beetle will have more rear legroom and better packaging than the current model.

Jacoby explained that the next version will be more of a “halo” car for the Volkswagen brand and that it should outsell the current model, which peaked at 83,434 U.S. sales in 1999.

Despite featuring extra space, the replacement for the New Beetle will be roughly the same size as the current model. Not much else is known about the car apart from the fact that it will likely be manufactured in Mexico and that its platform will be shared with the latest-generation Golf.
