UK's Mandelson wants meeting with GM on Opel

UK union supports GM's decision

NOVEMBER 4, 2009 10:16 CET

LONDON (Reuters) -- British Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said on Wednesday he wanted talks soon with General Motors Co. after the U.S. automaker scrapped plans to sell its European Opel unit, which includes British sister brand Vauxhall and its UK plants.

"I am keen for very early discussions with GM over their plans for the business and how they will affect British plants and workers," Mandelson said in a statement.

"I have always said that if the right long-term sustainable solution is identified, then the government would be willing to support this," he said, without elaborating.

Prior to releasing the statement, a spokesman in Mandelson's office said: "We want to work closely with GM to understand their plan for the business and what it means for the UK." "If the right long-term, sustainable solution is identified, then the government would be willing to provide funding to this."

The Unite union, which had secured a deal with Magna of no compulsory redundancies at Opel's plants in the UK, described GM's decision as the best deal for Britain.
