No more doubt in my mind. This is a very, very unattractive car on the outside. However, the finally fixed the badly misaligned center stack on the '02 model. Anyone who praises that one's interior needs to lay off the hash.

Also, 14.5-15 cu.ft. of trunkspace is flat-out unacceptable for a car of this size, especially with those massive unshielded hinges domestic cars always get racked on.

Corolla - 13.5

Impala - 18.6

Cobalt - 13.9

This Toyota cost cutting has to stop... now they are putting Lexus IS tailights in as headlights on the new Camry!!!  Stop the madness...

This car's interior is one of the very few that I can say Toyota makes and it sucks.  Don't tell me this is class leading in any way... it is still out classed and lower quality than the Accord and dare I say the refreshed Mazda Mazda6.

The car will sell in great numbers only because it is a stable product but just like the last generation it won't be the best car in this segment.

Really ... you can already tell the quality of the new Camry's interior without even sitting in it and examining it? I wish I had your psychic powers  .

According to the Toyota website, that is real wood in the Camry XLE.

How to put this delicately...

That's the only real wood you'll see in that car, both voluntary to avoid being inside that car, and because some people just can't have any.

Ahem...perhaps a special tray for viagra?

...I've gone too far.

Gosh, I didn't realize how much nicer I liked the Sonata after this picture comparo. The Camry in the Photo says it's an XLE which is the best model. Everything from the wheels to the hideous front end to the naked, plain looking side with no chrome door handles to no door moldings make the Camry blander than ever. Add a smaller trunk with intrusive trunk hinges and a lower output 4 cylinder, 2.4 Camry engine makes 158hp, GM's 2.4 Ecotec makes from 167hp to 177hp. Sonata 2.4 makes 162hp! People comparing this car online will find several dissapointments here. The Impala really trumps this car on trunk space with non intrusive hinges at 18.6 cu.ft. But it's that magical Toyota name that will keep this lame duck a best seller and put our workers on the streets!

I saw the Camry in person, and the front end really doesn't look good. The side profile of the front end looks like it has a wart (wear the toyota emblem sits), and the front gril design just looks odd. Almost like they took the corporate Mazda look and plumped it up.

I was at the auto show today and I have to say the new Camry is disappointing, especially the sporty version. I'm sure the drivetrain is first class but overall exterior design is disappointing, it looks even worse in person than on pictures. The interior is nothing to brag about and IMHO it still is not as good as Accord's interior.

Also,

Escalade-awesome inside and out

Ford Edge-very nice inside and out, should sell well

Lincoln MKX(Aviator)-nice but not worth $5-6K? over the Edge

Lincoln MKS(concept)-cool car, it got the potential.

Camaro and Challenger-build them and they'll come.

Well after seeing the Saturn Aura in Detroit today, I think the Camry finally has some competition. Although it was only the concept version, I dont think GM will make many changes to it. Here is some comparo pictures:

I know I would take the Aura over the Camry anyday!

You're comparing the production version of the Camry to the concept version of the Aura.

In terms of interior, although I haven't seen the Aura's production interior yet, I am doubtful it'll look as good (in my opinion) as it does in the concept. And I am doubtful I'll like it more than the Camry's.

The exterior, however, I prefer the Aura. How close the production version will be, we'll see.

  • 5 months later...

I've got a summer job cleaning new cars at a Toyota dealership (a great job, except for the Toyota cars :P), and one day I spent a good solid 10 minutes staring at a Camry 'cause there was nothing else to do.

When I look at the car, I see the last-gen Camry, a little Chrysler 300, and just a touch of Lexus 350.

The profile is flat-out gorgeous. I was looking at it at eye level and there isn't a bad curve on it.

The back is okay. I think it's one of those things that could grow on you when you get used to it.

The interior is nice, although I really think that the wood trim just doesn't look good. It's too bright and too forced, almost as forced as the wood trim in the Corolla LE (wood trim in a Corolla, are you kidding?). The 300 is the same way when it has wood...it's like some cars put it in because they know it will bring certain people in to buy it.

The front end is... atrocious. Sorry. There is no redeeming value to the grille. The sportier LE is *kind of* okay, but anything else is not good. And, like a lot of Toyota design elements, it's not even original! Look at an Mazda MPV or 3. But even their models don't look as bad. I think it's because of the freakin' huge Toyota logo and the fact that it's on top of the grille.

Haven't driven em around much yet. They don't let us go too fast anyways :/

Anywho, it's better than the FJ!
