GM can fix Opel problems on its own, minister says

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -- U.S. carmaker General Motors Co. can resolve on its own issues related to its European arm Opel, Germany's Economy Minister said on Friday.

"I am of the opinion that General Motors is in a position to sort out its own issues," Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle told reporters when asked about state aid for Opel.

Bruederle was in Brussels to discuss with other European Union ministers on the Opel restructuring. GM wants states with Opel plants -- including Germany, Britain, Spain and Belgium -- to help finance the estimated 3.3 billion euro plan.
