GM likely to offer test drives at Detroit show

12/23/2009, 10:48 AMBY DREW JOHNSON

Auto shows are all about seeing the latest automotive advancements, but General Motors wants the upcoming Detroit Auto Show to be more about experiencing the automaker’s latest products. GM is currently in negotiations with the Cobo Center – the home of the Detroit show – and city officials about setting up a test course for show-goers.

The Detroit show already features a quarter-mile eco track beneath the main floor of Cobo center, but the 2010 could also include a test course for GM vehicles on the streets of Detroit. GM is hammering out the final details of the course and will have an answer from officials within the next few days.

GM is hopeful the test course will help distance the company from its summer bankruptcy, putting the focus back on its vehicles. The course would likely feature vehicle from all four of GM’s remaining core brands – Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC.

Although not a traditional auto show staple, GM has plans to offer test drives at several upcoming auto shows, including the Chicago show in February. GM already set up a test course at the New England International Auto Show, tallying 1,400 test drives, according to Automotive News.

GM actually did this with the Cadillac brand at the NE Auto Show. It was awesome.

They should do that for all the shows. It would be a great way to stand out.

This has been done at the last few Toronto shows.

Yep! Got to drive the Malibu and Astra! A very good idea, that should be at all shows!
