Ford to revive Mustang Boss with 302R and 302R1

12/29/2009, 12:23 PMBY MARK KLEIS

With the undeniable success of Chevy’s latest Camaro resurrection, Ford is likely also looking to tug at the heart strings of long-time fans with the reintroduction of the 5.0 nameplate, and now the legendary “Boss” nameplate as well. Ford will be selling a very limited run of track-ready, 5.0 powered, Boss labeled 2011 Mustangs right over the parts counters of its local dealerships.

Ford has announced the details on its new 5.0-liter V8 engine that will power its Mustang GT, and now it will also be offering a 302R Mustang that is based on a street-legal 2011 Mustang GT. To make this pony car worthy of its name, Ford has gutted the interior and replaced it with a full roll cage, special racing seats and safety harnesses. The Boss 302R also features a telemetry system, upgraded Brembo brakes, race tires and a race-spec suspension.

The price tag for this race-track bound beast comes in at $79,000, and can be ordered at any normal parts desk found at your local Ford dealership. Ford plans to deliver the 302R to its eager customers in the fall of 2010.

For those with deeper pockets and a serious desire to go fast, Ford also offers the Boss 302R1. The Boss 302R1 is uniquely prepped for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series, which many of you likely know as the former Koni Challenge series.

The extremely limited run 302R1, with just five copies planned, will command $129,000 each, and will feature a unique, sealed high-output 5.0-liter V8 with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, seam-welded body, race exhaust, single-piece driveshaft and a stiffer Koni race suspension. Ford expects these cars to see track time, and promises to deliver them in time for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway come January.
