It might be cold consolation to those of us desperate for a Scirocco in the States, but the Volkswagen Compact Coupe Concept has the potential to fill that particular hatch-shaped hole in our hearts - with a bit of green cred to boot.

With a sharper, more sculpted front fascia than its Golf and Jetta siblings, a deep swage line running the length of the sides and a rather anonymous (exhaust-less) rump, the Compact Coupe - as we mentioned earlier - comes across as the poor man's Audi A5. And the interior is something to behold.

Not only does it put the segment stalwarts to shame in both style and space, VW took pains to make the rear seats actually inhabitable. There's ample leg room and a trick center console with independent climate controls for both passengers, a quad-zone setup we hope makes the transition to production.

Although there's sure to be countless variants of the Coupe when it arrives in production guise (were sure a few versions of the 2.0T will find their way underhood), in the "concept" motivation is provided by a 1.4-liter TSI inline-four, putting out 150 horsepower and 110 pound-feet of torque. However, when partnered with it's hybrid system (a 20-kilowatt electric motor drawing pour from a lithium ion battery), output is boosted by 27 ponies to 177 hp and an equal amount of torque. VW estimates that U.S. mileage should average around 45 mpg and with its hybrid setup, the Concept Coupe can be driven in full electric mode for an unspecified range. With it's seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, VW pegs the Coupe's 0-60 time at 8.1 seconds, with a top speed of 141 mph.

Although VW claims the Coupe is only a concept at this stage, the level of detail and V-Dub's lack of a credible coupe offering indicates that a production version should be on the way. And if VW's smart, they'll ditch the slow-selling Eos and offer a retractable soft-top version a few years after the Coupe hits the market. Check out all the details in our previous post.

seriously dull

i new car that looks 25 years old. i am getting an 80's vibe from this.

a fat porky VW. THis is not their thing!

this with 2 more doors is your next Jetta sedan. built in the US. VW has sold out.

I'd call this a fastball strike right down the pipe, off speed strike on the corner, chip foul, followed by a third strike chasing a high fastball, swinging seriously late.

Show me a 25 year old car that looks like it. I'll be waiting.

Anyway it's ok, but VW and Audi are starting to look a lot a like. This looks like an A5 from the back. Looks really thick too. It's handsome enough but it is boring.

I love it. It's buttoned-down, tailored, elegant and trim. It appears expensive. It really is a baby A5, and that's a good thing.

you even 25 years yourself? i guess i was thinking the front beak looked like some import cars from that time frame. the side slab looks like an early-mid nineties accord coupe more than anything.

baby a5? LOL! i almost spit out my coffee at that one.

Besides the strange headlights, I like it.

I think the headlights are my favorite part - the black in the headlight housing continues the grill opening - a very neat design feature IMO.

Considering you like to think every new car looks like every other car on the market, I'm surprised you didn't notice it.

A carbon copy it is not, but there's certainly a resemblance from behind.

Clean-cut, simple, broad shouldered, Germanic; a typical Vee-Dub. Pitted against other compact coupes in the States, it's a delight. Pitted against the Scirocco, it's boring.

I like it..clean..definitely has an A5 vibe to the rear... the C-pillar reminds me of the '99 Jetta coupe concept. Very Audi like taillights. Oddly, the front end reminds me a toned-down version of the current US Focus. Definitely doesn't remotely look like any '25 yr old cars'.

crisp, elegant, great side surfacing effects...this would be a revelation at $18k, but i think it will come in more around $25k.

i grant you that. the jennifer lopez view does make them appear very similar. the audi is more curvy. a5/s5 doesnt do much for me either FWIW

maybe i was not thinking so much 80's as much as some of the greenhouse shape, character lines on the side, and the front headlights and slot grille really remind me of various japanese coupes like a couple of the earlier accord coupes. maybe an old 240sx too.

it just has the blah profile shape and proportioning that does not seem to mesh with what many other are doing now with the radical sculpting, pushing and pulling the windshields and back glass, fender blisters, wild headlights and tailights.

the CC is so effing nice, to see this from VW is simply not good enough.

I'm thinking it is a preview of what the next Jetta 4dr will look like..picture it w/ 2 more doors. For what it is--a compact FWD model--it's pretty clean and well-proportioned. Compare it to the the Civic coupe (which looks like two completely different cars front and back).

Speaking of the CC, I'd love to see a 2dr coupe version of that car...it's a very sleek 4dr as it is.

I agree. I'm not a huge VW fan, but I find this coupe appealing. It's purposeful, Germanic, and totally appropriate for VW.

There's one thing I noticed about the A5 coupe. Pictures really don't do it justice. To me, it looks sort of dull in pictures, but the car is rather striking in the flesh (or metal). They tend to catch my attention when I see them out and about on the road.

Here's a surprise - I like it.

Nice, clean, sane design with the right number of doors and pleasing proportions.

This shouldn't be any surprise, but I love it. Very clean, definitely cut, and especially classy. As expected.

So far, this is the only design at NAIAS that floats my boat.

After looking through the gallery pics, I like it even more.
